Been listening to a bit of stuff that's made me wonder what other people's ideas of awesome quotes are, and where they mostly come from. So reminisce away!

Mine at the moment are:
Brad Pitt's Nazi scalp speech from Inglorious Basterds for the awesome factor;
"I make my own luck" from Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation just cause I can remember that influencing me in so much stuff I've done in the years since I first played it;
"Imitate and water down" from Your New Aesthetic by Jimmy Eat World because I think it sums up just about anything now, copies of anything that's been made or done before;

And just for the hell of it, "Sometimes I wish I could still touch children" by my Year 9 Science teacher. I'll let you think of why.

Hmmm, okay, including literary quotes:

Invictus by WE Henley- amazingly inspiring poem.
The St Crispin's Day speech: Henry V, Shakespeare.
V for Vendetta- a source of infnitely quotable quotes about bravery, the role of the government in people's lives, and introductions with lots of V's in them.

Real life quotes:
Anything Voltaire said.
"Take a step closer lads, it'll be easier that way"- Childers, to the firing squad about to execute him.

*Edit: Also, anything in any Monty Python ever. Except the bad ones.

Warhammer all the way. Few quotes here:

"To BE A man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruellest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be ге-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods."

Yea verily, though I charge through the valley of the shadow of death, fear no evil, for I am driving a house-sized vehicle with 11 barrels of "fuck you" - Bernatus Montgomerus, 24th Philippinian Regiment

"Badass Astartes? Badass?, you try fighting all these xenos with a flashlight as your main weapon and toilet paper as your armor! Survive for 65 days and then we can call you badass! - Sgt. Foleus, 3rd Philippnian Regiment

'The reinforcements were greatly appreciated... erm, have you got any more?'

? Colonel Strickland +++

Ech, these quotes so clearly demonstrates universe of warhammer 40000...

Anything said by Chesty Puller

"Groovy." - Ash

"I don't believe in Faries!" - Dresden in Summer Knight as a battecry.

In the Divine Comedy the whole gate of hell inscription.

Henry V band of brothers speech.

edit: in a Battletech book Archer Christifori takes a world near the Lyran capital and basically says to Archon Katherine Steiner-Davion "Come and get it, you *****." I just thought that was funny ass hell to say something like that to a woman who rules 100s of worlds and a massive army.

"I think you had so much on your mind that you couldn't even take your next step. Well, if you don't understand it, try just accepting it. Accept that you are weak, accept the path you've chosen, accept that nothing makes sense in this whole damn world! Once you accept everything, you can choose your next path, the one path you really wanna take." - Jecht, Dissidia: Final Fantasy

"What must be defended is inevitably lost, you will know despair and emptiness, but remember: surrender to despair and you will be no more than a pathetic dog. Never cast away hope, and live on with pride." - Gabranth, Dissidia: Final Fantasy

Dissidia has a heap of absolute gems.

I think "Don't worry, be happy" is easily the greatest thing ever said in the history of mankind.

I'm not a Christian but some Bible quotes are awesome:

"Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God"

Can't think of any other good ones right now.

But they're way outclassed by the very, very, VERY shitty ones.

OT: My favourite quote came from a writer I can't really remember the name of.

"The only downside of immortaliy, is that it lasts forever."

Not really meaningful, but a good quote nonetheless.

"Most cats dislike the harmonica" This was an ad for software that would play loud noises if 'catlike typing' was detected

'I may not agree with what you're saying, but I will fight to to the death for your right to say it' - Voltaire, I think

'He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither' - paraphrase of Benjamin Franklin

'It is often said that before you die your life passes before your eyes. It is in fact true. It's called living'
Terry Pratchett

Yes, that's attributed to Voltaire. What no-one seems to know/remember is who he said that to.

Cookie to those who do.

OT:

'For Heaven's sake, do not risk the gun.' - an amusing quote regarding artillery in the early 1700's, can't quite remember, but I think it was John Churchill

'Much may be made of a Scotchman, if he be caught young enough!' - Samuel Johnson

'If one is to be pressed into the navy, one must contrive to be put in prison, for there is at least is a chance of nourishment, escape and on the whole better company.' - I think that was Samuel Johnson as well

'History repeats itself because no-one was listening the first time.' - anon, honestly, no-one knows who said that first

Man, that is such a load of anarchistic crap. So people who don't want to live in complete fear all the time don't deserve any kind of freedom? Franklin was an idealistic idiot.

At some levels security is feasible without impinging on the freedoms of the secure, surely?

It all depends on your definition of freedom, and each individual's perception of what the correct balance between civil liberty and intrusive security is
