I really liked Legend of Legaia, and by mild association Xenogears as well. Just something about hitting the right combination of buttons and watching the damage fly was always entertaining.

I also really enjoy about any old school turned based battle system. If it's not broken, you really shouldn't go off and try to fix it.

Oh, and I HAVE to give a nod to the Star Ocean games.

Wizardry 8.

Let me be honest, I'm kind of a big fan of games where you can create your own party from scratch and do battle in a turn based fashion.

Wizardry, Might and Magic, Ultima, the "holy trinity" it would be amazing if they were still around as single player games today and evolved with new graphics and such.

It's hard for me to become really attached to JRPG battle systems since most of them are only around for one game.

Legend of Dragoon.

The only game to perfect turn-based gaming, which requires precision timing, concentration and serious mashing the O button when the enemy shoots out red sparks in the middle of a combo.

My fave RPG battle system would have to be The legend of dragoon, just because the ability to power up your attacks by timing the X button Correctly Just gave it tht little bit more interaction tht i needed.
Legend of Dragoons was okay... my main problem was that you had NO abilities other than "Attack" when you were out of Dragoon Form. Also if you liked LOD's battle system, Try Shadow Hearts: Covenant, it's like LOD except with more options and a better story. It's also VERY VERY funny.
I will have to try it. But finding the game will be tricky.

No one played it but me it seems, but I've always thought Temple of Elemental Evil had an excellent combat system. Very tactical combat that took just about every little element into account during battle for some extremely fun strategic small squad strategy.

I know, it's not a jrpg, I'm sorry. But lets face it, jrpgs have been using the same basic combat system with a few tweaks here and there since the jrpg first came about, which ironically were inspired by ye olden western rpg's like Ultima and the like. Go figure. Nothing particularly wrong with the system and tweaks every here and there try to keep it interesting, but how are ya'll not bored yet?

Morrowind's Weapon Fighting system. I liked how the weapon damage system(slash, thrust, Chop) give limitations on using it (chasing and poking somone with a war hammer is useless)

Though it's spell system was awful. and non-regenitive magicka killeds the pure mage.

I love the KH system for RPGs. It's got a nice action feel to it. While I hated the game, I think the Oblivion's system was alright, but I prefer the ME style of things.

FFX-2, indeed

And

Dare I say?

Pokemon.

Last but certainly not least.
The grandaddy of strategic rpg's Shining Force also stands as one of my favorite systems. You always feel like you need just another moment to prepare your ranks for a charge next turn and then the enemy suddenly springs all kind of nastiness on you by attacking that one character that was just a square out of place and you wanted to move on their next turn, absolutely destroying your beautiful plan. There hasn't been a turn based game that has got me so involved in the battles as that one.

grandia was good, chaining attacks to hold back enemies atb bar gave a bit more strategy to the gameplay.
kingdom hearts 2 was just really fun/
and you cant beat good old golden sun style gameplay.

If they count, I would say every single game from the Zelda series, except for Zelda 2.
The NES and SNES games have solid real time combat in place, with a lot of skill required in handling the different weapons. Ocarina of Time implemented one of the first user friendly lock on systems, with Wind Waker and Twilight providing more of the same. Even though the DS game is pretty weak, the stylus control is intuitive and unique.

When my head ventures outside of Nintendo's arsehole I would also say Okami's paintbrush system is good, especially the Wii version (damn) because it's the same as the PS2 but quicker.

While I don't like random battles in RPGs, in Kingdom Hearts I didn't mind so much because the fights were always mental, and it is satisying when all the Munny flies around afterwards.

I dunno, I've been playing Diamond and while I find catching different Pokemon fun and interesting, I find the battles a little dull at the moment, basically I just find the one attack that works well and keep using it. I enjoyed SMT: Nocturne's battle system a lot more and kept wishing Pokemon had something like the PRess Turn system from the SMT games.

If it wasn't so slow-paced and bloated with options, ToEE would've had Betrayal at Krondor beat.

Oh, and Phantasy Star 4's super-fast pace alone puts its Dragon Quest fighting miles ahead of Dragon Quest itself.

I'll tell you what, Legend of Dragoon's combat was fun... it's just a shame the rest of the game was bloody awful (for 'bloody awful', please take with appropriate portioning of salt and/or hyperbole).

Probably oblivion. While it was a deeply flawed game in other ways, I really enjoyed the combat-gameplay. Especially as a mid-level stealth character (Poisoned sneak attacks to 2-shot, run away if spotted).
