Neverwinter Nights 2 (and NWN1, of course). Part of that is bias; it gave me an outlet for the DnD part of me, when I didn't have the time to actually run or play a tabletop game. Mostly, though, I just really appreciate a good, modern, DnD-based cRPG that makes it possible to mod and play through custom quests/stories.

Whenever I'm told to chose one, and only one, favorite I can instantly think of at least a handful.
Usually I have trouble remembering what I had for my last meal.

So, lo and behold, as tiny a list as I can make.

wRPG: Fallout 2 / Arcanum of steamworks and magick obscura.
H'n'S: Dungeon Siege II / Harbinger
jRPG: Phantasy Star series

good choice i really enjoyed that myself. hated the first game and the sequel

my contribution would be shadowrun dragonfall. best characterisation of your party ive seen in a game, even beats the mass effect series for me, great story, you never know who to trust, a great hub world you grow to care about

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, no contest really. Plenty of other rpg have great characters or great story or great gameplay, but BG2 is the only rpg I've played that has all of them together in one finely polished, massive, and satisfying product.

It's been around 14 years now since it's release and yet nothing else has quite lived up to Baldur's Gate 2. It reigns as king of the computer rpg's atop a pile of pretenders and aspirants.

I have a few that I will always love,

Illusion of Time - Snes
Skies of Arcadia: Legends - Gamecube
Tales of Symphonia - Gamecube/PS3

It says a lot that Tales of Symphonia a 10 year old game re released for the PS3 this year is possibly my game of the year.

There is a surprising amount of Phantasy Star love here and I am loving it. However, none of them are my favourites.

My favourite is Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne/Lucifer's Call which is also my overall favourite game. Incredibly fun battle system, gorgeous art style, great music (especially dem ambient tracks) and a story that, while not award-winningly fantastic, is very interesting, open-ended and thoughtful.

A close second is Planescape: Torment which is marred by its shitty, shitty dungeon design[footnote]People often say "combat" but it's mechanically very similar to Icewind Dale which is fantastic. The real problem is the terribly thought out encounters and shitty excuses for dungeons, which just amount to a bunch of corridoors with far, far too many enemies in them.[/footnote] but has the best story and best choice-and-consequences of literally any game ever. Characters with multiple layers and actual nuance and a thematically ambitious narrative that actually delivers on that ambition with excellent dialogue and good prose really set it apart from the rest of gaming.

My favorite is probably Chrono Cross. Most might go with Trigger, but I liked Secret of Mana just as much as Chrono Trigger. And I like Cross better than SoM.

The Fallout series is a very close second. They're all great and I can't really find anything BAD to say about any of them. Following that are the Elder Scrolls (all of which have great upside but all have their own flaws as well.)

It was the original Neverwinter Nights until I played one of the modern Bethesda FPRPGs. Can't remember if it was Fallout 3 or Oblivion but after that I've found the 3rd person style severely lacking in terms of making me feel like I'm actually in the world rather than watching the actions of a little marionette.

So I'd say a 3 way toss up (0_o) between Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas. Didn't like the world in Skyrim though.

MMO wise, I'm not very well versed, having only played GW, Neverwinter and a bit of GW2 and Tera. Favourite is Neverwinter so far, they've really got the action combat down and although some people say it's world is rather small for an MMO (it is, from what I can tell) what's there is well made and being more of an RPG player than MMO it suits me fine.

JRPG wise, Secret of Mana is the only one I've ever liked and that was about 20 years ago and my tastes have changed to the point that anything that vaguely JRPG like repulses me pretty rapidly (e.g. Tera, I liked the combat, almost as good as Neverwinter and had a couple of cool mechanics that were better, but aesthetically it really wasn't my cup of tea, unless it was one of those times I accidentally made it with 2 week old rancid milk).

Final Fantasy VII - Also my favourite game of all time so a pretty easy answer for me. I have enjoyed many other games since and before but nothing has impressed me as much as this game even now the characters especially are my favourites only Persona 4 has come close for having such a great cast in an RPG imo. I must admit though I was kinda disappointed on what they did to most of the cast when they took them out of the game they just turned a lot of them into completely different people especially Cloud.

2nd favourite RPG is Xenoblade Chronicles 3rd favourite is undecided but Persona 4 is a good candidate.

Personally I feel Dark Souls 1 is the best action RPG ever created with Wither 2 a close second and my personal favorite is Oblivion, just because it had the most fun side quests ever.

Of all time? Fallout 3 gets pretty high marks. It was so buggy it died after I'd played through the main game and expansions on a PS3. I didn't get to play the last side quests but for $30, I'd put in 150 hours.

Now? I'm doing a compare contrast on Final Fantasy 14 and Guild Wars 2. So far, Final Fantasy 14 is kicking the snot out of Guild Wars 2. I'm going to hate paying $13 a month for my subscription though.

Breath of Fire 3 for me, mainly due to the nostalgia value. I have little doubt it would fare poorly if compared to other heavyweight rpgs but it was still really good and had a decent sequel (of sorts) to boot with Breath of Fire 4.

2nd place would be the 1st Mass Effect, a lot of things that people didn't like about the 1st that is said to be "improved" in the sequels are things I don't agree with. Notably I prefer the more open ended levels where you could snipe an enemy from miles away and your aiming was partially dependent on stats.

In 3rd place it's a tie between Baldurs Gate 2 and Dragon Age Origins, mostly due to the trademark bioware companion banter. I'm a sucker for feeling like I'm leading a group of dysfunctional individuals that talk a lot.
