I was reading the tread about setting up a game of DEFCON (which I have not played but wish i have)and made me think about some if the RTS's I have played over the years. I wanted to know what your favorites are.

I'm a big fan of Starcraft (even though I haven't play on battle.net in a while), the Warcraft series, Age of Empires 3, and the command and conquer series just to name a few.

Dawn of War, hands down, mainly because I love the 40k universe but the game itself is very good. Although it would be better if some of the races were done right and relic didnt keep bilking us for money with expansion packs.
I thought it was finished now that there's nine races but I hear tale that the expansion madness will start again with DoW2 -.-

Seconding Dawn of War. I realize this is sacrilege but...after playing that game...I kinda wonder what Starcraft 2 is really gonna have to offer to the RTS realm. How are they going to top a unit that boosts the squads damage rating by executing someone next to them?

I really haven't played RTS since StarCraft or Warcraft 2 (I personally thought WC3 sucked). I also didn't have a very good time with Heroes of Might and Magic. The big Hero guy that can wipe out 10 times more that a regular guy really got to me. Anywho, looking forward to StarCraft 2. Because the first was so good (people STILL play it) I hope it doesn't bomb.

Warcraft III hands down! Such variety in units, buildings and everything worked so smoothly. I would definitely recommended Defcon.

The moon project, i loved it how you could do 70 different researches. Inlcuding different tank bodys, weapons, shielding, ammo. And the best thing about it is that you can customize your tanks to your likings, for example, you could choose light bodys wight a light energy weapon, or with a light rocket launcher but maybe you wanted a heavy tank with 2 heavy lightning guns plus medium rocket launcher on top and a medium energy field to protect it? another great thing is that you could gain credit by time, no harvesting or whatever (sounds lazy doesnt it?) wich resulted in long lasting battles with the enemy wich would never die due to lack of credit but would keep upgrading and charging until you mannaged to get either a large force or a strong force. I really want to find that disk 1 to install it since only having disk 2 is kinda useless. -.-"

other than that 1 really sweet game, i loved warcraft 2 and warcraft 3 because of the map editor, making mission with friends and stuff. the age of *something* series were fun, but not long enough for me and now i love to play C&C generals alot and C&C 3 sometimes(wich i have on the 360, so i cant do any massive skirmish games with 8 players, just 4 to avoid lag i think)

command & conquer for general play, Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance for LAN parties. It's much more fun when you can yell at someone in the same room for raping your army ^_^

Ive loved Warcraft 3, C&C: Red Alert 1 & 2, C&C 3, didn't mind Supreme Commander and All of the Dawn of Wars (Except Soulstorm).
Yep, that's about it pretty sure, it is anyway.

It almost doesn't count but I love the RTS combat in the Total War games.

Oh, and Total Annihilation, probably still my favorite True RTS game.

Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth 2: Soulblighter - best story, best physics, best graphic (back in '97)and most of all best gameplay, focusing on formations and micromanagemtn instead of mass unit production. Go get it if you haven't had a chance back in the days, and if you do have it, be sure to check out mariusnet.com where the community and online play happens. Oh yeahm I'd forget - best multiplayer :)

Age of Empires II is my all-time fav, even though I wouldn't play it nowadays. Don't know why exactly, but last time I reinstalled, I didn't really feel like playing it anymore... Guess I had gotten used to playing WCIII, AoM and C&C:G a few years after that.

Haven't really played RTS's since then anymore, actually... a small fling with Company of Heroes, but I got bored of it after 3 missions. I think I'll reinstall WCIII for ol' times sake soon...

....I feel you. I feel you very clearly, my friend. I have to agree with this entirely.
I will say however, that after Age of Empires II, my favorite game is Dawn of War.
Take weapon X. Now add a chainsaw to it, and make it explosive and on fire if at all possible. WELCOME TO WARHAMMER 40K!

My top 5 are as follows:
Command and Conquer Generals
Warcraft 3
Starcraft
Supreme Commander
Age of Mythology

These all include the expansions that came out for them. Obviously Age of mythology is there not due to merit, but due to nostolgia.

Age of Empires II used to be my absolute favorite but now I think Rise of Nations is the best. Having dynamic nation borders and being able to capture cities rather than just destroy everything I think was very innovative.

I started out on Age of Empires II, and I still love it. I like it more than Age of Empires III no matter how many expansions I slap on it.

Age of Mythology is also pretty cool, and I do relish Warcraft III, but I think the only thing that has a hope of winning out over Age of Empires II is...

Battle for Middle-Earth II!
