Zelda 2 . So fun , so challenging , so good .

I WOULD say crash bandicoot , but technically that isn't side scrolling , it's front scrolling! Amirite!?

Klonoa. Wahoo! I loved that game. I finished it with all the collectibles multiple times. I even loved the sequel on the PS2 which wasn't as good. I also played the two Gameboy versions which were more puzzle games than sidescrollers.

Sonic The Hedgehog for the Mega Drive. Still one of my favourite games of all time.

Also a big fan of Rayman Origins as well.

So one old and one new. Now all I'd need is something borrowed and something blue (actually, scratch that, because of Sonic actually)

My all time favourite is Yoshi's Island. It's hard for me to make a cohesive statement about why. I don't know, I guess that game just "felt" so right. Also, really dug the art-style and the music was glorious. It's the only game that actually makes me drag out the old Super Nintendo, dust it of and pop it in for another spin every once in a while.

They're all so insanely catchy!

I must, I feel like, give an honourable mention to Rayman Origins. It's a great game. To me, it stands of well to it's older peers. It's also really nice to see that people still care about this genre(outside Nintendo) and are willing to craft high quality games for it.

[edit]
Rayman also gets points in my book for it's easy(yet tight) controls and great co-op. Me and my fiancée have been having fun with it.

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on Gameboy Color.

I haven't played Rayman Origins, but I've been meaning to pick it up.

Rocket Knight Adventures on the Megadrive. Challenging, but never unfair, fantastic visuals, amazing music, smooth controls, brilliant levels, fairly unique ideas married with the familiar, fucking awesome bosses and several sections that somehow managed to be legitimately terrifying even though you were playing as a possum with a fire throwing sword and a jetpack... *and... breathe*

I fucking love that game.

Super Metroid is a very close second. The jumping is a teensy bit clunky, but the environments are memorable, the soundtrack is so dark and sinister (almost makes it feel horror-esque at times!) the bosses are intense as fuck and exploration is so fun. It also really surprised me when I first played it as I was used to the Mortal Kombat-censoring, Mario releasing Nintendo and this game just seemed so dark in comparison. I mean, there are dead people on the title screen, for early '90s Nintendo that was pretty darned hardcore.

Super Castlevania 4 on the SNES. Kickass music, graphics, gameplay...

But especially the music.

I feel I should also mention the Batman game on the NES. Once again, awesome music, graphics and gameplay.

But man, was it hard.....

If Metroidvanias count, then probably either Cave Story or Symphony of the Night. If not, then probably Super Mario World. I had the GBA port back when I was a kid, and it's been a long-time favorite of mine.

Super Mario Bros 3 its just never been bettered in my opinion such a sublime game even if the difficulty does go a bit off kilter in world 8. Super Mario Bros is up there as well but 3 took the 2D platformer to as close to perfection as it has ever been.

After this the other Mario games went downhill some are still amazing platformers but they just arent as good.
