Probably the online Platformer: Don't look back.

That game is epic, certainly one of my favourites... that's aside from the Mario platformers.

I'm a sucker for the Castlevania series, but that aside... hmm... a nice obscure but good side-scroller eh?

Rocket Knight Adventures, which has possibly the best premise for a game *EVER*:
I'll have to agree with this guy... And sonic 3 is one of my favourites too.

No one has mentioned Ghouls 'n Ghosts! I love that game! And Bionic Commander on Amiga too.

Well if SSB Melee includes as a side-scroller then that, but if not probably Super Metroid.

Super Mario World for NES.
Obviously
Fail! Super Mario World was for the SNES, not the NES.
FAIL! We are talking about a very old video game and I doubt anyone cares that I said NES (except for you...), I think they know what I meant.

Toss up between Metal Slug and Braid (unless you don't consider Braid a side-scroller).

Would Abe's Oddysey count as a side scroller? It's more of a side bumper, but it's still the best at that.

Abe's Oddysey it is.
Agreed. Even to this day I still pine for that game.
