I have a friend that still has the ps2 as his console: not everyone has the cash to drop on a new console ? however after playing Warhawk and Borderlands, I think he may be saving up for a ps3 now.
Anyway, he?s trying to figure out what great games he may not have played on the ps2 yet. Of course he?s played all the big ones: God of Wars, GTAs, MGSs, and so on.
What games do you think may have flown under his radar.
To give you an idea, I lent him God Hand which he?s really enjoying. But that?s a short game and I think he?ll need a new one soon.

I can say some damn good games for you, I however can not remember what the hype levels were for 'em.

Ratchet and clank (skip the first and the last on the PS2)

Jak and Daxter (and Jak 2, Jak 3 Skip Jak X racing.)

And uhhh...

Memory is failing me. That's all I have that I'd STRONGLY recommend.

*Edit
Perhaps shadow of the colossus?

Beyond Good & Evil and the Ape Escape games come to mind, but that's about it.

[small]I would say Shadow of the Colossus, but anyone who hasn't heard of that game by now is an idiot.[/small]

Dragon Quest VIII? Decent game.
Dark Cloud? Also decent game.
Ico? Heard good things.
Star Wars Battlefront 2? Ah memories...
The Memory Card game? Accessable only when the cat has fried the Ps2
and one wishes to stare at game data with a scowl.

Started playing Okami on the Wii the other night and it's great so far.

XIII and Spartan:Total Warrior were pretty good

Okami
Eternal Darkness

Eck, some of those are on the cube, my bad, but I am in teh same boat as your friend, just looking for all the hits from last gen on both the GC and PS2 however.

Throw in Killer 7 though it lags on the PS2

As well as some of the obvious ones that have already been mentioned, Mercenaries comes to mind... although it seems like it might have been more well known in the US than it was here in Australia.

Man, I spent so long playing that game.

Okay maybe underhyped was the wrong descriptor to use. He's actually played most of these: I'll have to suggest Beyond G&E.
Good suggestions though.

Maybe ?Hidden Gems? would be a better phrase to use but I always thought that sounded like a gay sex move. Obscure could be another good one but it always gives me the feeling of referring to something pretentious which can work for modern art paintings (or any other art you only have to observe for several minuets) but I?ve never played a really good game that was also pretentious.

Thanks for the help.

No one? No one remembered?

Zone of the Enders 2. It is one of the best games I have ever played, seek it out.

Psychonauts. Yup. You're going to get a lot of people recommending that one, and I can't help agreeing with them!

Also, Steambot Chronicles. Might seem a bit slow next to God Hand, but it's surprisingly immersive and incredibly diverse. Customize your own battle-robot, become a prize fighter, dig for fossils, invent the electric guitar - the list goes on!

EDIT: Shit. Forgot Okami! One of the few really original games out there! ANYONE who owns a PS2 owes it to themselves to try Okami at least once!

Rogue Galaxy was also a great action-RPG with a really cool graphics engine and a system at the end that almost limitlessly extends playability.

Jet Set Radio, such a good game with a pretty good sequel and yet the franchise died.
