I've only bought two video game soundtracks:
Dragon Age 2
Leliana's Song
Inon Zur is a goddamn genius as far as i'm concerned.
After debating with myself on what is my favorite, I figured it wouldn't hurt to share.
I'm torn between the works of Mass Effect, MGS 1-4, Metroid Prime series, current gen Mario series, and the classics of previous generations before these (Too many to name, of course). I love them all and whatever I come across usually has something that draws me in and elicits an emotional response.
Likewise, the most powerful music compositions are those that I feel set the mood and describe the theme to a painfully accurate degree. Something memorable and instantly recognizable is a must.
Something like the soundtracks for Earthbound, Mother 3, and Brave Fencer Musashi.
Words cannot describe the music, so instead I will post OST vids.
Spoiler'd for the benefit of post space. Two of each, for safety reasons.
Can't have your brain exploding from awesomeness, of course.
Halo! Everytime Halo! The soundtrack for Halo was amazing. I don't think any game has ever used music as well to create an atmosphere and impact on the player's emotions.
There's two games with soundtracks that I've actually listened to while not playing the game, and they are Doom and Quake 2. [edit] Okay three, the first Quake counts as well. Doom was more for nostalgia, but Phobos Anomaly is still a haunting tune, there's only so much you can do with MIDI, and Bobby Prince did an amazing job. Quake 2 just had an awesome metal soundtrack courtesy of Sonic Mayhem that fit perfectly with the game. What with all the cyborgs and people being put in an emulsifying flesh press, it worked well. The first Quake had great music as well, although it was more ambiance than anything, but Trent Reznor knew his shit back then. Hell, the main Quake theme could've been on a NIN album.
One more edit. After posting I felt like playing Quake again, and apparently Windows Vista recognizes the disc as a music CD, and media player automatically starts playing the soundtrack. Interesting to me at least.
For serious business Alan Wake has a pretty amazing soundtrack. As for ''video game music'' Terraria has got me in it's evil bleepy nostalgic clutches atm. I just love the music.
It's time for a list!
1. Halo - Martin O'Donnell. Need I say more?
2. Halo 2
3. Halo 3
4. Halo 3: ODST
5. Halo: Reach
6. Halo Wars
7. Gears of War 2 - Fits the game really well and does well for creating tension during gameplay.
8. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
9. Advance Wars: Dual Strike - For a handheld, it has some good songs.
10. Dynasty Warriors (Any) - Guitars everywhere up in this *****.
11. Killing Floor - First game I've played that employed heavy metal riffs as its soundtrack and wasn't Guitar Hero
12. Total Annihilation - Holy crap, the music for this 1997 RTS is astounding!
