read that now so I don't have to explain how Hip-Hop is just as complex, if not more so, than rock.

also, a vocalist is someone who does the vocals in a song, last I checked rap is words.

Complex? I don't follow. All you've got to do is include syncopation and fast-paced speaking. There, done. R&B is a bit better than rap, I'll admit.

Meh, personally I believe a vocalist should have vocal talent, and not just a gift with musical theory. That's just me though, you're right in that being the denotation.

Speaking of which, might I enquire as to whether you listen to Dimension Zero then? Another band where I admire the vocalist, although I don't rate Gothberg as highly as Friden. Still, I've only heard the latest album, so I can't comment on their older stuff, although if it's anything like the latest album, I'll like it.
Aye, definitely. They're an intriquite part of my playlist.

I've always been a big fan of the Gothenburg metal scene, especially the old school sound of At the Gates, Nightrage, Gates of Ishtar, Eucharist, Dimension Zero, Despite and to a lesser extent, early In Flames and Dark Tranquility. And if you enjoy Dimension Zero, you might want to check out Nightrage if you haven't already. You can check their myspace where there is a song from their upcoming album, as well as some of their older stuff when Tompa from At the Gates was their lead singer.

And I grew up with Maiden just like you did, but I got into black and death metal rather quickly after that.

Now this I can get into.

The singer is what I generally enjoy best in a band.

I like...
Tim McIlrath (Rise Against. Very deep voice.)

Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day. Just enjoyable for some reason. Slurs a lot of his words, especially live. Pretty easy to imitate.)

Things in that vein (pop-punk, hardcore rock, etc,) are generally the kinds of singers I like.
Just not a big fan of female vocalists.
I would also add Corey Taylor (slipknot and stone sour). Just plain epic.
I would also like to add that i think Rise Against are the best band ever and i cannot wait to go and see them in november. It will be awesome.

Fair enough - I think I'll find myself listening to a few of those within the week, so thanks!

As for the black and death metal scene, like I said, 3 years ago was my first exposure to In Flames, and, aside from Dimension Zero, that's about it as far as I've listened to that kind of music.

Oh, another vocalist who's probably already been mentioned - Freddie Mercury.

Don't mention it.

I'll give you a heads up, because of your preference in music there is a good chance that you will not care much for Gates of Ishtar, Eucharist and possibly At the Gates(be sure to listen to the "Slaughter of the Soul" album, it is their best work). Nightrage and Despite is your best bet. I hope you find something you'll like.

Another contribution to the thread, Kai Jaakkola - The Duskfall, Deathbound and Deathchain.

OP, I'm glad you put Serj Tankian. He is by far my favorite vocalist.

I also like Rivers Cuomo from Weezer and the guys from Barenaked Ladies.

I'm not usually into their type of music, but I like Rise Against, largely based on his voice.

My favorites are probably Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel), Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden), probably others...
My fav is Kevin Ruser (Lego Basement)
I enjoyed his cover of Sabotage.

Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley were great vocalists as well.

Tarja Turunen, ex-Nightwish vocalist. I know her voice isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it gives me chills. Operatic and haunting, bombastic and sensual.. I adore her.
Right there! Tarja Turunen has a wonderful voice :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwbtbfAnI80 she's soloing now, well she has her band but it's no nightwish... :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYZsn2G9eq8&feature=related her cover of poison :)
Mmm, Tarja.

I really like her solo stuff, actually. Very addictive.

Burton C. Bell of Fear Factory, he pretty much invented the singing style where you mix screaming, growling, and actual singing, and he also did it the best.

And

Jimmy Urine of MSI, just because I'm not sure how a human voice can go that high...
