I like Vic Mignonia's roles (the life he brought to Junpei Iori in Persona 3 is phenomenal)despite hearing how he's a dick as a person. Hell, I was at the Ottawa Comiccon last month and he hijacked the mic after an announcement that someone else was hosting a panel to be like "Hey, he's cool and all, but come to MY panel instead!" Still, I can respect a man's work without respecting the man.
Some of my other favorites are...
- Liam O'Brien. His deeper, raspy voice is just perfect, but he can also sound whiny and high pitched as well. Just look at the contrast between characters like Endrance (.hack//G.U.) and Akihiko Sanada (Persona 3) and then suddenly look at Dist (Tales of the Abyss) as the same guy. Yeah. I usually like him best as more of a formal stoic or socially awkward character, since those roles are harder to make work and he just nails them.
- Laura Bailey. Say what you will, I've been a fan ever since I saw the Dine And Dash scene in Blazblue Continuum Shift (and had my like for that character wrenched away in CS2 when she took the damn cloak off and - OH GOD WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?) Point being, she voices a lot of characters that I like. In particular, Rise Kujikawa in Persona 4. I thought I'd hate this character. And I might have hated her had I not done her social link. The life that Laura Bailey brings to this role is great. Or, for another example, Cheria Barnes in Tales of Graces. She just nailed that role. (And yes, I only got to finally play Persona 4 a few months ago.)
- Nolan North. He may be overused, sure (Hell, I think he talks to "himself" in... Mafia 2, was it?) But I like his roles. Uncharted would have actually kind of sucked if not for Nathan Drake's biting snark, and even at times where he has more minor roles (Cyrus in White Knight Chronicles, anyone?) He generally ends up being memorable.
- Bridget Hoffman. One name: Atoli. Seriously. Atoli from .hack//G.U. has got to be one of my favorite characters of all time, and a part of it is the voicework. I have a deep emotional connection to G.U. and the pairing of Haseo/Atoli (It's what brought my fiancee and I together in the first place) which has earned her a spot on my list of favorites.
- Yuri Lowenthal. I know what you're thinking, and I have this to say: he does do other voices. He does have talent. He just gets paid for his more recognizeable one. Look no further than the Persona series; In Persona 3, he did angry battle cries for the otherwise silent protagonist, he was the child known as Pharos, and the hopelessness he delivered as Ryoji was great. Then cut to Persona 4 where he plays the buttmonkey role as Yosuke.
- Cam Clarke. Another example of being famous for one particular voice (His deeper, more common voice, as seen in roles like Kratos Aurion from Tales of Symphonia, or Jonathan Archer from Robotech Battlecry.) The thing is, look no further than Max from the Original Robotech to see what this guy can do differently. I mean really.
I like a LOT more, but this is just some of the more commonly seen ones. Crispan Freeman, for example, makes an absolutely stellar villain, but he doesn't do that many roles. Likewise, Erin Fitzgerald is very hit-or-miss, and there's also a lot of roles I really enjoyed who I never bothered to look up the VAs for (Like Kanji Tatsumi in Persona 4, or pretty much the entire dub cast of Clannad.)
