Wow, difficult choice. I've always loved Pratchett, Tolkien and Heinlein, but these days my favourite would have to be Iain M. Banks, with Stephen Baxter and Peter F. Hamilton not far behind. Go the Brits!

I'm a big fan of George R. R. Martin.... JULY 12 BABY! IT'S ALMOST HEREEEEEEE

But outside of that, I love Heinlein, Verne, Twain, and other assorted classical authors.
Some here, although July 12th isn't the only big day for GRRM fans, in 22 days we get the HBO series, and boy am I excited for that.

Also Brian Jacques Q_Q

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but Tolkien sucks as far as story and characters, his achievement was the world which he created.

respect knuckles!

yeah, GRRM all the way. there are a lot of writers i like, enjoy, and respect, but i've never read anything as complex and tightly woven as A Song of Ice and Fire.
Additional bump fisterry

David Eddings, David Farland, Terry Pratchett, and Orson Scott Card. Even if the last is bat-shit crazy politically and ideologically, he can write damn good books.

As I can't chose only one I will name a few I love to read.

Isaac Asimov - Foundation and MANY other incredible novels and short stories.

J.R.R. Tolkien - Brilliant, much too deep to describe here, I like his novels as much as I like Asimov's

H.P Lovecraft - I love the way he wrote those stories, the level of (schizophrenic) detail the stories have and the structure he used is marvelous: something happens/happened -> starts to create the universe thrugh historic facts and events -> repeats the same structure over and over, putting some important events in the middle, this happens untill the experience gets vivid -> Bam! The End. His stories are truly terrorizing in some cases.

Arthur C. Clarke - Have only read a little of what he wrote but he's still one of my favourites.

J.K Rowling - The HP series is very well written, maybe it's a bit too equalized for the masses but it is actually very good.
