I have come to believe there is quite a well-read society on this website and so I am curious, what is our favourite book/series of books? Personally I vote for Robert Jordan's (James Rigby's) The Wheel of Time series. Seriously, in my opinion they are some of the best written books available.

William Golding's Lord of the Flies and J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye are two of my favorite books.

I've heard good things about Ender's Game and Discworld as well, but I've never even touched them.

The Watchmen, without question.
It was the most entertaining thing I've read.

The Last Vampire series by Christopher Pike. All of them except book 6. Didn't really enjoy it. The first five drew me in like no other.

After the last one, I likely wont finish this damn series. I have been reading it since what 1989 and the author still couldn't get it finished...no, before dying he had to do "New Spring" and "Conan"...I know that is insenstive, but seriously.

Also, what is with all the spanking in those books? I love Rand and Perrin, even Mat but after that....

My money, I love Jim Butcher. Good books, well written, fun style and pacing.

As for what else I read? A whole lotta philosophy, economics and history lately.

I absolutely love Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Everything about em is great! They're funny and silly and weird all while handling surprisingly mature subjects and presenting a fantastic cast of believable and entertaining characters you can't help but cheer on. Brilliant!

Probably my single favorite book though is Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Don't quite know why, but there's just something about the tone and story which clicks with me.

But if you want something more obscure I'd recommend reading 'The Lies of Locke Lamora' by Scott Lynch presuming you're a 'serious fantasy ala Robert Jordan, G.R.R.Martin, etc' fan! Probably my favorite book in that vein. Less depressing than Martin, although just as mature, and less boring and long winded than Jordan was.

Prey
Starship Troopers

and that's just from the top of my head, I like a lot of books.

If I really had to pick a favorite, I guess I'd say The Hyperion Cantos, especially the first two books (Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion). They're just mindblowingly awesome, and a must-read for any sci-fi fan.

Other favorites are:
- A Song of Ice and Fire
- The Foundation (anything by Isaac Asimov, really)
- The Dark Tower (I'm no Stephen King fan, but these are great)
- The Wheel of Time
- Perdido Street Station (China Mieville is awesome)

Obviously, I'm a big fan of sci-fi and fantasy, like a good little geek. :p

The Prince by Machiavelli (This man is a genius!)
The Tragedy of Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe (interesting subject matter)
Animal Farm and 1984 both by George Orwell (you got it right)
Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien (The man practically invented the fantasy genre and is my favorite author)
Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton (Constantly showing why technology isn't always good)
The Wheel of time series by Robert Jordan (RIP)

I hope to read Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith and possibly the Communist Manifesto by Marx and Engels
