The Silmarillion (Tolkien) is my favorite book. Followed closely by the Revelation Space trilogy (Alastair Reynolds) and Hyperion (Dan Simmons, never read Endymion and Rise of Endymion though. I should).

Anything by Neil Gaiman, If I had to pick one it would be StarDust, full of magic and this almost melancholic mood about it that is sort of an undertone to the big adventure going on.

Ayn Rand's Anthem, it makes it's to the point unlike her other heftier books, though they aren't to bad either. She also wrote a short story called the Night King, which has a cool twist at the end.

The Voyage of The Dawn Treader by C.S Lewis, is really enjoyable as an adventure book and I liked Eustace transformation from twat to decent guy. It's sequel, The Silver Chair isn't bad either

William Golding's Lord of the Flies and J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye are two of my favorite books.

I've heard good things about Ender's Game and Discworld as well, but I've never even touched them.
I read Lord of the Flies, but I didn't really like it that much. I mean, the subject matter is intriguing, but it didn't really appeal to me. Now Catcher in the Rye I loved. The subject matter is, when someone describes it, pretty boring, but it's written really well, and the thoughts of Holden were often really similar to my own, so I really identified with him.

And I really liked Ender's Game too. Have never read Discworld, though.

Why did I quote this specific post? I have no idea. Probably because when I'd try to come up with a reply of my own, I'd forget a good deal of books I've read.

But just to add to the list of the books Hazy listed, I'd recommend The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It's different from everything else I had read in a few ways. And also American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I'm just recommending that as I'm reading it right now, but it's exactly the kind of fantasy I like, so needless to say, I'm fond of the book.

James Clavell's Shogun is one of my favorites. I reread it every couple of years. The rest of the Asian Saga is pretty goood, but Shogun takes the cake.

From classic literature: Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene; Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy; John Milton's Paradise Lost.

Everything That Rises Must Converge is a collection of short stories from Flannery O'Connor, and a decent read. If the short story route should interest you, I also recommend James Joyce's Dubliners.

Stephen King's The Stand is an excellent novel. I read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt last summer and thoroughly enjoyed it.

1. Schindler's List

2. All Quiet on the Western Front

Best books ever!
All Quiet on the Western Front was a struggle for me, although I did feel as though it captured the essence of WWI. Have you read Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane, I found this similar to All Quiet on the Western Front: realistic and well written, but a bore.
Never have read Red Badge of Courage. Whats it about?

Hmmmm....

Hyperion:Dan Simmons
Because a Time Travelling killer robot that enjoys slicing limbs and heads that impales people on its tree of Eternal Torment is just plain fun to read about : P. It won a Hugo Award as well.

Execution Hour: Gordon Rennie
As far as Warhammer 40k books go, this one is my favorite. The writing is notches above whats normally to be expected from 40k novels and it provides hella good insight into the nature of ship combat in 40k as well as the process of a planet slowly being consumed by the Forces of Chaos.

Ender's Game and all of its sequels and the Ender's Shadow series. AWESOME.

And I'm also a fan of Eragon (NOT THE MOVIE/GAME), and I'm rereading those at the moment.

I see many people saying that Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series is good. I started reading the first one and i stopped about a quarter of the way through, mainly because i had to read a different book for school, but it didn't really seem that great. I mean the love plot is already almost completely resolved by that point and i don't see how it can go on for the length it does from what i see of the main plot. I'm wondering if it gets exciting soon.

I'm at the part where Richard's in the Narrows and he sees Kahlan isn't with him, so it looks like it's about to get good, but the problem is i never really started to sympathize with Richard.

Never have read Red Badge of Courage. Whats it about?
Its about this kid who joins the Union Army(?) during the American Civil War. At first he has this glorious/heroic view on war; believing that he will return a hero. Obviously he has know idea of what war is truly like. All the other soldiers talk about how they had earned their own "Red Badge of Courage" aka wound/injury. The kid wants to earn his own badge and gain respect among the soldiers, but when it comes time for battle he chickens out and runs away. He ends up faking his "Red badge of Courage"(i believe). I forget the next couple segments. In the end he leads some charge against the enemy and I don't really know what happened b/c I lost interest and hated it from the start.

Sorry if I gave any plot segments away, but these aren't major plot twists and the book sucked anyway. I hope this helped!
