Isn't the PS2 still the best-selling console ever? Unfortunate, considering you only got Heihachi in Soul Calibur II while us Xbox boys got Spawn - who's exclusion from the fourth game is what's stopping me from buying it. On a serious note, the PSone gets my vote because the best game that was ever made (Abe's Exodus) was made for that system.
I disagree; although it is a very good game, I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
The PSone was my first console, so it's my sentimental favourite. Plus there's this one cut-scene in Exodus which made me giggle uncontrollably every time I saw it. Unfortunately, I haven't played a lot of the classic games like Donkey Kong - the only ones I think would qualify are the Sonic games and Super Mario World 2. I love those kind of old platformers but they're so damn scarce these days and I'm a little paranoid when it comes to buying stuff from the internet...
It's a sad world we live in where people don't recognize billy madison quotes anymore.

Donkey Kong sucks!
You know what, YOU suck!!!

Edit: sorry about the double post, I figured I'd do something with it rather than just take up space.

I'd have to say my favorite next gen console is the 360 but this generation of gaming is kinda disappointing.

My favorite old console is the N64. It would have been the Dreamcast but there just are not enough good games for it.

Let's see, I'd definately put N64 waaaaaay up there with the worst consoles ever. Since it should have been a CD based system, it failed in more than one way. I'll also put the Gamecube up there with bad consoles that piss me off and have crap for games.

As for good consoles.
SNES-this system was solid gold. Back in the day when you were either behind nintendo or sega, this system kept nintendo in the top spot for years.
PS1- Out of nowhere this system came and gave us some of the very best games ever. When FF7 came out for this system and not the N64, it pretty much ensured sony would be around for a good long while. Heck, I still play many of these games on a regular basis.
PS2- Had a slow start, but eventually our investment payed off. Massive numbers of titles, backwards compatible (not like the Xbox 360, which gets glitchy with Xbox games) and a DVD player to boot. Good times for all.

I have so many fond memories of my SNES. Best RPGs, Super Probotector, Bomberman 2, Streetfighter 2, Mario Kart, Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Starfox and Stuntrace FX, and hundreds of others. It was just all so new and exciting. After the initial thrill of 3D with the next generation consoles, I think I only felt that 'magic' thrice since (Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time and FF7), and I have never felt that feeling again since.

I have to go with the SNES. Games like Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy 3, and Sunset Riders are still some of my favorite games.

Oh, yeah, aint that cool, the PS3 has a web browser. Maybe PCs should look into that...
I've said it before and I will say it again. A PC is not a console. Gaagh that drives me up the wall. It is OK to be a PC gamer, I even put up with the whole "more sophisticated games" rigamarole because it is one of those subjective things that can't make it through a reasonable discussion without a "yeah I guess you could say that".

Fave console for me... That is a tough question. This gen, the 360 has taken it for me. I have to say, overall, the PS2 (and this is not fanboyism, I've gotten more play and more love outta that system than any other, and I have been playing since The Atari 2600, Anyone else put as many hours into Moon Buggy as I did?).

Based on how many hours I've spent on it, I'd have to say that the 360 is my favorite. It's really the best console out there now IMO in terms of straight games. There are so many that I really enjoy playing and I have spent a lot of time playing.

I would say the original Xbox:
1) It was innovative for a console; Hard drive and Xbox live.
2) The range of game types available; Splinter Cell, Halo, KOTOR, Panzer Dragoon, Morrowind, Blinx and Project Gotham pretty much cover all bases.
3) Microsoft entered the console war at a time when Sony looked like they would bury it with their financial muscle. Suddenly they had to compete with a company that not only has as much disposable revenue, but will also play as dirty.

If throwing shed loads of cash (that the competition don't have) at third party developers to gain exclusivity contracts therefore reducing the amount of available software for other consoles, isn't playing dirty then I don't know what is.

With regards to Live, I used that rather than saying online as Live is more than an online function. Live is a gaming community where every gamer has there own identity, and achievements (which I originally thought were a stupid idea) have changed the way a lot of people view their games.

I had a Dreamcast, the modem was barely a feature.

- And when did Sony actually buy exclusivity? -

From the beginning as far as I am concerned. How else could a complete newcomer to the games industry not only compete with Nintendo and Sega, two companies that had been doing it for years, but eventually bury Sega's console hardware threat and force Nintendo to re-strategize their development program.

Also when the Xbox came onto the scene suddenly the word 'exclusive' became an industry buzz word,; not because of the games that the Xbox had (eg. Halo, Splinter Cell) but because of the games that it didn't have (eg. MGS, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto)

That's the reason Microsoft's biggest announcement at the last two E3's were GTA4 and FF13 on 360 at release. Considering where they were when they entered the industry, that is a huge triumph for them, and a perfect example of how money talks in any industry.

Sony has had exclusive contracts with companies, but I don't recall them ever going out and buying exclusives. Many companies chose them because Nintendo didn't want to use a CD based format. Besides, by this time Sega was running themselves into the ground with too much hardware when the Playstation hit the market.
