My first gut reaction is '6', for the characters, the score, and the combat system. Then again, what I really loved about '7' was that it's the only one that drops you right into the thick of things.

...and I loved the world in '9', and the story in '10'. Gah!

X, possessing one of the best scores, most unique artwork, and one of the best turn-based battle systems which I was immensely sad to see replaced with the MMORPG bog-standard of "click to run up and whack 'em 'till they dead" in future games. Also has the best voicework of any of the games that has that, which is weird considering it was the first of the series to do so.

Number 6. Minimal angst, the characters are well-rounded, the ninja actually acts like a ninja, there is a samurai who speaks in Old English and the villain is essentially the Joker on meth. Furthermore, its the last really good Final Fantasy, because after that, the series became way to JRPG-ish for me.

Either X or IX...

I haven't completed a FF game to date, even though I've had my hands on all the main games so far, except XI and XII.

It's X because of... All of it! Music, story, and the turn based combat which I have a odd love for.

Or it's IX for all of the reasons above, and Vivi. Vivi is my favorite charecter in the FF-verse.

EDIT: And VII was just ruined for me. I hate spoilers. >.<

Tactics. Combat and the Job system meshed perfectly. I'll never forgive Delita for what he did.

the original FF.
It had everything that made a good RPG; Challenging bosses, rescource management, dungeon exploration (or exploration in general) , things where not outright told to you in cutscenes you had to talk to townsfolk and you created your own party. The only thing it didn't have was a villain that I would hate so much I would finish the game just to kick is ass.(FFVI wins by far here)

VIII, because I really enjoyed the junction system, the story was more character driven than past FF games, the music was great (but then again, it pretty much always is) and I appreciated that, unlike Cloud, Squall actually went somewhere as a person.

Plus, it had my favorite FF character ever; Laguna Loire. If you didn't like Squall (as I didn't at the start of the game) never fear because you have the eminently likable Laguna to fill his shoes until Squall grows his backbone.

FF9

Characters with actual unique skills, no bullshit job, materia or junction system. Simple combat, good story, possibly the best music from any FF game.

Final Fantasy VI. Great cast, great story, great battle system, great graphics. It's just so perfect. It's closely followed by XII for the same reasons.

Unsurprisingly for unsurprising reasons my favourite is VI but after that it's kinda full of surprises as I really REALLY like XIII, II, X, V and XII and don't particularly like III, IV or VII

but III because I didn't think it did enough different, IV because of the silly and outrageous storyline (even for Final Fantasy) and VII because I hated almost every character in the game, apart from Red, Yuffie and Tifa.

VI to me has the best and biggest cast with a HUGE amount of back story for them all, an epic soundtrack and a wonderful world to travel, it's just brilliant and is actually my favourite game of all time anyway

everyone has their favourite.. and i was wondering what the reasons behind everyones ff of choice is... and also whether i'm all alone on fighting on the ff9 front? ;) lol
No. I'm also on the same front as yours. Why?

FF7: I still can't believe that game isn't a parody. There so many clichés. Also, do i really have to fight a kid with an Oedipus complex and find him threatening? And, i'm the only one on this but, I saw first time through what would happen to Aeris. It was telegraph a disk and a fews hours before. There also the fact that Selphiroth(intentional) stab Aeris stomach. (Since your a women, you should know) That mean that the cause of dead is drowning by Cloud. Nice going Emo Kid!

FF8: I can make a 9000 page book on that. I only own it because to remind me not to follow fanboy recommendation. EVER

FFX: Daddy issue and dialog written for people that still think girl give cooties. I went to Sid and deem the world not worth saving.

FFXII: The Gambit system remove the strategy aspect of the game. That said, I feel the same way Yahtzee feel on his THE WORLD END WITH YOU review.

FFXIII: Boringly make you traverse a corridor and then ask you to read the equivalent of the full Harry Potter's series just put you up to speed with the game. I'm at twenty hour in and didn't found anything intriguing so by now they should all be turn into Zombies. En the world became a better place. I'll keep that one also to remind me to never bought anything base on a name i like. EVER!

Edit: What your reason?

Definetely not! Final Fantasy IX was the best installment of the series in my opinion. I loved the environments, the characters were memorable and developed very well, I loved the story. It was an all-around amazing game.

*deep sigh* Man...I'd have to say Final Fantasy Eye-Ex right now. But I'm currently playing through Final Fantasy Six on an emulator, so that might change.

And damn it, Freya Crescent is one of the most underrated characters ever. Vivi gets a lot of love. What about Freya? What do you have against anthros, you anthro-haters?!

I do think I need to point out that Final Fantasy VII was made in 1997. A lot of those cliches you are complaining about? Final Fantasy VII made those. It's like calling Lord of the Rings a cliche fantasy book. Not that I'm saying VII is as good as LOTR, but it's the same kind of mindset.
