Final Fantasy VIII. It has a great story if you actually pay attention and have a head for piecing together stories. The characters were well defined,and the main character,Squall Leonheart,evoled from being an immature,emotionless tard to being a character who emotes well,and is quite mature,considering what's going on,what with some crazy woman trying to Divide by Zero.
The soundtrack was a work of art,with amazing pieces like;

The Trigger mechanic was great,and it made sense. Junctioning,although being a number-crunching chore with the potential to destabilize the game,is stll quite enjoyable because you have to work for your Uberstats. The weapon crafting is also quite enjoyable,because that way you save your precious Gil for potions and the like. Oh,and on the topic of money,you don't get money from killing things. You get a paycheck every so often.
The setting is also quite enjoyable,because it's nowhere NEAR your classic fantasy setting. It ranges from port towns set in the 1980's and more modern cities to futuristic cities. There is only a single inhabited location that's anywhere near fantasy,and that's the Shumi Village.
