There's not much to explain about this one, but my favourite would be from Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix 3.
Great music, good build up of tension, well timed and thought out, and it really gives a sense of atmosphere about the game

A good game intro needs to do the game justice, give the basic setting of the game but most importantly, it needs to make both newbies and veterans of the game want to play the game. And my vote goes to the Gears 2 intro:

Half Life 2.

It's just perfect. Yes I know the game's gameplay isn't that great, and the story is pretty "eh", but the opening... oh man, no other opening comes close to being so great. You fully control Gordon, and can see and explore the space. The game shows you just enough of the Combine so you can make your own conclusions as to what's happening. The game doesn't show them being stupidly evil just for the sake of it, but shows little instances of disturbing scenes that gradually get worse. And all this time it never forces you to move on, or locks you into a rails section. You are free to move and go on at your own pace, and you have no annoying narration or character pointing out everything that's going on. YOU see what's going on.

The game trusts you to be smart, and it works.

Either this one: Fallout 2

Sums up the fallout universe so perfectly, a world where authority has done nothing but lie to its people until the day they met reality for the first time.

Or: Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn

Feels just like a DM giving the introduction to a great campaign.

I have to say... The first 15 minutes or so of Mass Effect 2 was absolutely jaw dropping to me. I didn't care much for Mass Effect 1 until the very last couple of hours. Which was equally pants-crappingly good.

I'm so glad they broke ME1 Shepard away from being as corny as Kevin Sorbo in Andromeda in ME2.

I loved the intro to Final Fantasy 8. It might not be my favorite game, but the music, and the scenes, and the fight between Squall and Seifer. I would start up a new game just to watch the opening.

I must say, that the Starcraft 2 Wings Of Liberty intro is my personal favourite atm. Its no the best, but its not far off it. Made all the better by Arcturus Mensgk's evil southern voice of awesomesauce, I must say.

The following is a tad biased as I'm a huge Star Wars (and TOR) fan, but it's a damn good cinematic:

Civilization V however, has one of the most amazing intros I've seen. Never fails to give me the chills.

There's tons more, I could go on all day, but the above two are my favourites, at least off the top of my head :)

Red Alert 2, and Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge. Maybe because Udo Keir plays Yuri, and I met him. But it's awesome!

We had a thread about this not too long ago, so I'm just going to post the exact same thing.
for its INSANE SPOILERS:
because the "quote" at the start sets the tone perfectly, and because the last scene with the dark room is downright beautiful.
The conception is cool too, but that comes a little later.

for the dark humor and old-timey charm.

for TDR designs. I would pick 2097 if not for the jarring Red Bull ad at the start.

Also this. I wish it had a little more going on than a montage, but the music and style make it work.
