So, this is all about the best games nobody else ever seemed to play or know about. Commercial failures that were brilliant, a game others dismiss because they assume is bad but isn't, or other smaller games that just aren't very popular to everyone else that you know is truly amazing. Usually, when I see things like this I might look into them and see if the game involved interests me, and in many cases, I experience games I wouldn't have otherwise.

There are a few very obvious ones, like Psychonauts, Beyond Good and Evil and Okami, which are all brilliant games which I have had the pleasure of enjoying, and I am sure many of you will name. Several others than what I will mention come to mind for me, like Jet Set Radio future, Unreal championship 2, XIII and Mechassualt 2 on Xbox original and Chromehounds on 360, but for me, the big one for me is from Southend Interactive (as is XIII, interestingly), and they are Deathrow (2002) on the original Xbox. That has got to be in my top 5 games of all time, ridiculously fun. It is about a bloodsport, (confusingly called Blitz, not Deathrow. Weird, I know) which is like a combination of frizbee, hockey, and street fighting. There are always two teams, and the objective is to throw the weird electic cool-looking frizbee gizmotron through the opponents goal. A team wins either by KO-ing the entire other team or by scoring the most goals. You get the electric disc to score with by either taking it when its floating in the air following a goal or a misplaced pass, or by beating up one of the oppositions players with the disc and dispossessing them. You can just go out and attack the other team, beat them up, and then once each player is injured enough, get a KO. Each team has 4 players. There are 18 teams, and each team has different abilities, e.g. the Sea Cats, who are an all women team who are genetically enhanced to be able to live underwater, and who very quick and have precision shooting, the Crushers who are an all male team of genetically altered miners who are built like battle tanks, but are very slow and not so good at running, or catching, or the Marines, a team of men and women, who are, you guessed it, all marines, who are below average in most areas but have amazing fighting and team play. There are 18 teams who play VERY differently, and so there is always a different style if you don't like one of them. Honestly, I would advise anybody and everybody to at least give it a go since it was just so much fun for me. So, how about you?

Holy anti-sharkspray that game was awesome. I still have the my old copy with box and everything... in storage. >_<

As for me, I continuing the old-school trend with Ascendancy. An old 4x-game that taught me a lot of advanced English as a boy. I had very little understanding about how the game worked at first but through trail and error I taught myself to be quite competent at that game.

Gitaroo Man. One of the only rhythm games I ever gave a damn about. Gitaroo's are weaponized musical instruments. So you go around combating minions of some evil mastermind by playing solos and dodging when they play theirs. Great music covering a wide variety of genres, absurd plot, great gameplay...

Definitely an overlooked gem.

The Ys series in general are generally low key games, though they do have a very strong and loyal fanbase. Excellent high octane action adventure games none the less; pretty much Zelda on steroids.

I've played all of the main games (soldiering through Origins currently), and they are some of the most fantastic hack'n slash games I've ever played. 3 and Origins are on Steam, and they are two of the best in the series, though since 7 was my true introduction into the series it will always be my favorite.

Bahamut Lagoon is another great "unknown". Though I guess because it never left Japan, and you can only really play it through translated ROM has a big part in that case. A tactics style RPG for the SNES where you engage in big party battles, with some pokemon elements thrown in.

You breed and train dragons who essentially act as each parties banner, and you can issue commands to them. They will fight along side you, dishing out damage, defending you, and launching preemptive strikes. You can also feed them items like old gear which will affect their stats to make them stronger depending on what you feed them. While you feed them, they will "evolve" into different forms depending on which stats have been altered to a degree. You can breed some pretty bad ass dragons that will do a damn good job tenderizing the enemy before your team mates get a shot at them.

Gitaroo Man.
I had that on the PSP and it was one of two games that I played on the system for a long period of time (the other being Birth by Sleep). My favorite song being this one:

Considering the franchise died after only one game (and I think a single book), I'm going to go with Crimson Skies. It was an action/adventure game on the Xbox and PC wherein you fly a plane (which I believe you could upgrade if not, you could buy stronger ones) through large, sprawling levels. It's been a long freaking time since I've actually played it though so I remember nothing of the plot, characters, etc. I do remember the satisfaction associated with blowing up a Zeppelin though! Here's a trailer -

That jarred some memories for me! Alternate WW2, sky-pirates, sky-nazis and, you play as a Frank West look-alike.

Probably Croc 2. It's a really simple platformer, but when you're 6-7, it's a lot harder than it looks in the video.

It shocks me that no one ever talks about Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. I would honestly argue that it is probably on if the best, if not the best in the Mario series.

I love those games and haven't really met anyone else who has played them, at least as much as I have.

Tales of Vesperia for me. Loved that game but with it being so rare and hard to find it seems like nobody else has played it.

Hmmmm for age I would say Shining Force 2 (Sega Megadrive cause i'm from UK), everyone I know who has it got it in that Sega classic collection which is like 20 games, they didn't even know about it beforehand.

Disgaea 2 (PS2) I loved but I think more people know of that
My favourite game sorta recently has to be Legend of the Dragoon (PS1) with it's interactive fight stuff and I liked the story it had. It seems a little different from most other RPGs I play with a couple of cool twists, but I might just have rose-tinted glasses.

Breakdown: I f'ing love good time travel stories.

Psi Ops: I f'ing love games that let me do all the stuff that game lets me do.

Now I know for a fact that at least two other people know about these games, but I feel that they deserve all the press they can get.

I really like an indie game called Beat Hazard. It's a twin stick shooter that uses your own music collection to decide enemies and your weapon strength. really a lot of fun and usually very cheap on steam.

For me, it would have to be Starsiege:

Its been forever since I played that, and really, its the standard by which I judge all mech-piloting games. The sad thing is, is that they switched to being primarily FPS's, and practically never looked back at the robots.

I'm so freaking mainstream

The only ones I can think of are Dark Souls, which deserves to be even more popular than it is and LOZ: Majora's Mask, which is vastly superior to Ocarina of Time, but sold less. Also Fire Emblem in general is far better than its sales suggest. Still, though, they're all quite popular games.
