Poor KotoR 2. It wasn't as good as the first, but I thought it did enough interesting things to be kept off this list.

However, I had to make my first post in a while because this thread is missing the most important inclusion of all: Final Fantasy Tactics. FFT Advance was an abomination.

Oh, and Metal Gear Solid, because 2 was largely terrible.

The Adventures of Alundra for PS1 was an incredible game - as close to a Zelda game as you can get on a non-Nintendo device. People in the US don't need to take my word for it, as I believe you guys can get it on PSN now. Alundra 2 decided to go for a 3D style instead and was just shocking. It took about half an hour to go from "Whee! More Alundra!" through "What is this mess" to "I'm never playing this piece of shite again".

Devil May Cry is always going to be the series that disappointed me most with its sequel. 2 was just...

Splinter Cell: Conviction. It was hardly a stealth game any more at all, it was just not very good. I much preferred the old look it had, with the crowd stealth similar to AC.
I was very reticent at first about Conviction. I actually yelled at my TV the first time I played the demo. It sure as hell isn't the Splinter Cell I was expecting, but I for one actually really enjoyed the game after I let go of my prejudices and just played the demo as a new game rather than a Splinter Cell sequel.

I completely disagree with your statement about preferring the crowd stealth mechanics originally planned. Implementing that would have made it even more different from classic Splinter Cell than it was in the final product.

To each his own I suppose. It's just so rare I see anyone else even talking about Conviction that I felt compelled to respond.

I'm sure a ton of people have said Bioshock.

Sure, the gameplay got some much-needed upgrades, but the narrative was just rubbish.
And the narrative was the best thing about the series to begin with.

Chrono Trigger -> Chrono Cross. Now before anyone jumps down my throat, I want to clarify that I by no means think that Chrono Cross is a bad game, in fact I thoroughly enjoyed it. It had awesome music, great gameplay and a pretty interesting twist partway though which I won't spoil. Why I'm naming it as a crummy sequel is because I don't care for the direction they went with the story. I cannot accept the fact that Prince Crono (yeah, he married Marle that makes him a prince) and Co. could defeat Lavos
only to fall to that Lynx asshole. And there's no way Guardia could fall with Prince Crono (yeah I'm going to continue to call him 'Prince Crono' so shut up) and Co. to protect it.
I'm not going to be like one of those overzealous idiot fans and declare it non-canon or anything as if I actually have any say in the matter, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Command & Conquer 3 - Great game. Loved it.

Command & Conquer 4 - Kill it with fire.

That's really the only one that comes to mind right now.

Bioshock. The sequel completely missed the point of the original and missed out on the atmosphere, storytelling, characterisation and exploration.

Half-Life. The sequel had such a good beginning. I loved the section where you're running through a building away from the combine. It could have been so good if it hadn't followed that up with more running.....then a crappy vehicle section.....then that bloody dreadful Ravenholm level......then another shit vehicle level. That's as far as I got. Maybe it gets good after that although I honestly couldn't care. If I have to trail through 5 hours of bad driving controls and unbearably archaic combat to get to the good bit then the game has already failed.

Deus Ex -> Deus Ex: Invisible War.
Having said that, I'm currently playing DX:IW because I picked it up in a bundle on Steam.

Have to agree with the Bioshock -> 2.

I can't really think of anything people haven't already said.

Edit: People point to Fallout 3 as a poor sequel to Fallout 1/2 and I agree. But I have no idea what the people calling New Vegas a poor sequel to Fallout 3 are even talking about. Did we play the same two games? Fallout 3's world was pretty bland. New Vegas was smaller, but it had more of the character and humor I had been hoping for from Fallout 3.

You didn't like killing zombies with thrown saw blades and gas cylinders? Ravenholm is one of my favorite parts of HL2.
