Well, I was going to dive into this topic at some point anyway, so it might as well be now. And it's going to be one about dissecting your games collection. The question is, simply put:

Which game has your favourite gameplay mechanics?

It can be anything, from the way an FPS arranges its controls to something completely new, crazy and original. Also, Portal is banned.

Go:

Personally I'm going to pick Fallout 3. I'm going on my first playthrough right now and I can safely say this isn't my favourite game ever, but I cannot get over how cool the gameplay mechanics are. There's S.P.E.C.I.A.L. to decide your character build and then there are the skills, which cater in so many different areas that it's even possible to play this combat game as a pacifist. I mean, I'm playing through as my own character who is a bit of a survivalist and a very independant guy, but I could have just as easy played through the game as a slick thief or a traditional powerhouse kind of guy.
And the perks- oh man, the perks. I actually sat there one evening not even playing the game but just flipping through the guide putting circles around all the perks which looked fun, just going through them all and seeing how they would affect my character. I basically used it as some kind of fashion catalogue.
I literaly cannot image any other time that I was this invested in a game's mechanics other than Pokémon and that was my first video game with text, might I add. So it's been something really special to me.
OK, your go. Experiences with a game's mechanics?

Well i would either have to agree on you for fallout 3, simply for VATS and area damage to bodies, nothing quite as fun as crippling someones legs with a hunting rifle, shooting theyre gun out of theyre hands, then watch them blimdly hobble towards you onto a mine on the floor :p

either that or the smooth gorgeous gameplay of command and conquer red alert 3 for my 360, amazing game, great gameplay and i a game i can play over and over without getting bored =]

Legend of Mana for the PS1. I can NEVER get enough of that game because every time I play it's a new experience. The whole game is based around what weapons, items, partners, and pets you can create, then you go exploring the open world in whatever fashion you choose. It was like a sand-box, but with levels. And Daena's pretty much awesome.

...I think it's on the Playstation Network for purchase now? Definitely with a worth a look-see if you're interested in a cool and deep gaming experience.

Oh yeah, VATS is wonderful. I was going to mention it, but my post was getting too long. In most FPSs you just click a button and stuff goes down and sometimes it looks kind of funny, but in Fallout a lot of effort has actually gone in to making it look cool. And of course it's a good transition from the turn-based combat Fallout used to have.

Well, I don't have a PS3, but I'll definitely keep an eye out if I ever get one. ^.^

Arkham Asylum simply because the combat system was so simple, but so fluid and intuitive. Especially when you have a room full of all the different enemy types and you need to flip over the taser guy, stun the red guy, batarang another guy, counter someone else, takedown a different guy, etc., all in one combo. It just feels so badass.

Final Fantasy X

Something about it is just so much fun and I can play for ages before getting bored (That being said, I can't remember stopping a session of Final Fantasy X due to being bored.)

The exploration aspect of Assassin's Creed 1 & 2 and in Prototype. I just love going around, seeing every nook and cranny of the city and enjoying the view from the top.

Saints Row 2 wins the Gameplay Award from me simply because every time you think "nah, I probably can't do that," you do it anyway and it's better than you ever imagined.

Have you ever wanted to break up a fight between ninjas and pirates?
Have you ever wanted to do so with a chainsaw and a few bricks of C4?
How about hijacking a plane... naked?
Or achieving lift off in the smouldering remains of your $100,000 car having rammed it at turbo-boost speed into a petrol station?

It's random, hilarious fun that never ceases to impress me. That's why it's among my favourite games ever, and that's why I absolutely can't wait for Saints Row 3.

The Last Remnant, because it does something refreshing in the Turn Based RPG genre.

Fire Emblem's "chess meets rpg" gameplay is also great.

I was going to say Portal, but since i can't I would say puzzle themed temples/bosses like Darksiders/LoZ.

This.

Legend of Mana is still an amazing game. It did most things right, and the colorful world was very well done. It's $5(USD) on PSN.

Other than that, I really love Mass Effect's gameplay and, well, everything about it--even the MAKO from the first game. There still isn't any game that I've played quite like it.
