What about just a Science Movie? Like the Martian. All of the science in that is possible. Its all stuff that we can achieve using our understanding of science. We don't need to have 'magic science'.
Still sci-fi...since it didn't happen. Its science, its fiction. Badda-bing badda-boom.

Well, personally, I think we need a better word for "realisticish Sci-Fi" and keep the term Sci-Fi itself the umbrella term including Wars, Trek, Alien, Terminator, Warhammer 40k, etc.
We already have a term for realistic sci-fi, it's hard science fiction. I agree, sci-fi doesn't have to be very realistic. But Star Wars is fantasy because the world is completely fantasy/made up.
I think your average person would consider Star Wars Sci-Fi. Even I purely did until this exact same discussion came up for me elsewhere.

I just think making a new classification would be easier than trying to un-re-define the term Sci-Fi to people.

Well yes in that its fictive and science is a thing, but my point was that the science doesn't get explained away. It doesn't use magic, meaning impossible things, under the guise of high tech. It uses science grounded in reality.

I think the term is 'hard sci-fi'.

...Don't you switch sides on me!

What if we proved Star Trek entirely possible? Would it no longer be Sci-Fi then?

Life is real, yet when someone makes a book about a fictional person in a grounded reality, it is still fiction.

There's a difference. Think about it this way; Harry Potter is fantasy. But if you replaced their wands with Star Trek Tricorders, its Science Fiction. They're still casting spells, summoning ghosts, flying around on broomsticks, talking to giant spiders, morphing bodies, time traveling, you name it. They're just using technology to explain away the magic.

The Martian does not. The science is all possible using physics and technology even if as a story its fictive.

And yes, all fictive stories are fictional, but its kinda' a moot point. Saving Private Ryan didn't actually happen, it was a movie, but I'd maintain its more realistic and plausible than say...Aeon Flux or War of the Worlds. They're all fictions, but at no point does Tom Hanks cast Bullet Time using his alien compass to dodge Nazi rockets.

But to answer your question, yes, if we could prove and replicate all of the Star Trek's world, including technology and the aliens races and everything, then yes, it would become 'Hard Sci Fi'. It would still be Sci-Fi in that Jean Luc Picard is still a character, as is Kirk and Spock and Janeway and Data. All characters played by real people. But the technology and setting behind it would be grounded in reality. It'd be a fictional story, set in for lack of a better term, 'our world' because 'our world' would be Star Trek.

The difference between Saving Private Ryan and The Martian, one is Historical Fiction, one is Science Fiction. One is fiction of history, one is fiction of science. Both are plausible, but we don't really label Saving Private Ryan as hard historical fiction.

I just think this genre nitpicking is tedious and cumbersome.

Generic answer but an easy one: 2001.

Wouldn't really call Star Wars sci-fi.
Fuck it if you include 2001 than screw it I am also including the Rite of Spring segment of Disney's Fantasia as the greatest "Sci-Fi movie", it certainly fufills the "Science" part of Science Fiction:

I don't like 2001, but I am interested in seeing how 2010 continues the story now. Is it more of the same? IMDB says it is the opposite of 2001, in that it has more dialogue (possibly too much).

The interesting bits in 2001 were the monoliths, and the space station/HAL. Everything else was pretty boring, especially the lead up to the baby. The movie as a whole was really plodding and boring. At the time it may have been an interesting film, but I think it hasn't aged very well.
If you liked the monoliths and HAL, you'll love 2010 because they get a lot more focus.

The movie is shot in a much more traditional way, with fewer establishing shots and lingering effects and more character interactions. The plot itself is about a joint US/Russian mission to recover the abandon spaceship in Jupiter orbit, and how the crew deal with HAL, the escalation of the Cold War back on Earth, and later Dave.

My top five favorites would have to be-
1. Aliens/T2 (too close to call, so they're tied)
2. Robocop (the original)
3. The Fifth Element
4. Gattaca
5. Event Horizon/Pandorum (another tie)

For anyone who says Star Wars...it's space fantasy, not sci-fi ;p

Anyway, my top ten are as follows:

10) Apollo 13
9) Jurassic Park
8) WALL-E
7) The Terminator
6) The Matrix
5) Terminator 2: Judgement Day
4) Gravity
3) Alien
2) Aliens
1) Blade Runner

I'm admittedly uneasy about Apollo 13, as you could just as easily claim that it's historical fiction, since everything in the film happened in reality, bar usual creative license. But, whatever, it's there.

Edit: Anyone interested in favorite sci-fi shows? Because I need something to assure me that Star Trek isn't the be all and end all of sci-fi TV. 0_0

If you want science fiction on television that shows that Trek isn't the be all end all, there's Babylon 5 and Stargate SG1.

That's my point. I like Star Trek well enough, but consider SG-1 superior to TOS (not quite TNG though), and Babylon 5 currently takes the #1 spot for me. I'm just curious as to whether I'm crazy for thinking that there's other, better sci-fi shows than Star Trek, or, since everyone is hung up over the Kelvinverse and Discovery, whether I'm an oddity.

It's talked about because both are current. One had its latest entry be still in theatres, and the other is coming out in 4 months.

Easy pick for me: Aliens.

Watchable down to the last frame today as it was 30 years ago, brilliant pacing, quality acting from all involved (even Carrie Henn), wonderful visual design and effects.

It's a classic.

Does The Man From Earth count? Anyway, it's not necessarily my top, but it's up there for me.

Then there's the obvious mentions of course, like Alien/Aliens, Sunshine, Pandorum, and Deep Impact.

But the top Sci-Fi choice for me is definitely Contact [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118884/].

The Expanse! I was blown away by how good this show is turning out to be.

Good news on the Expanse front: The show is filming a second season, and cast New Zealand actress Frankie Adams to play the 7-foot Martian marine Bobbie Draper.

I'm fairly interested in The Expanse, but I have very little love for the novels it's based on. Either way, it's a moot point until it's released on DVD in Oz (if ever - thank God for Amazon and software on my PC that overrides region locking 0_0).

I know, right? 2001 is a much better book than 2010.

Oh, wait, movies? Sorry - more bullcrap headed your way. XD
