Definately the Sonic 3 Final Boss theme but also Chemical Plant as well.

Wish they used this version in Sonic Generations in some way.

The entire Sonic CD soundtrack (Japanese/Euro version - they changed the whole thing for the US version of the game) is simply outstanding.

Major tracks include the boss tune, which samples George S Clinton's "work that sucker to death":

And Quartz Quadrant (Present)

Stardust Speedway (Present)

And of course, Stardust Speedway (Bad Future) - also known as Metal Sonic's theme, since this is what you'll be hearing as you race that metal bastard across the whole zone with Robotnik chasing you with a death laser. (well, unless you've made it a Good Future already, but I think it might still play the "bad future" when Metal Sonic shows up.

Seriously though it's hard to pick out just those - the whole thing is awesome.

From this page I quote Mystic Cave, and the final boss from 3.

But I love the indolent feel these ghosts pass

Also GET A LOAD OF THIS!

And who could forget everyone's favorite theme?

And for a bonus.

All the songs by Crush 40.

Every. Single. One.

Other than that, here's a few others I happen to really like:

I am rather surprised that nobody seems to have mentioned the Ice Cap Zone yet. What a travesty. It's absolutely gorgeous. The two versions are pretty similar, but I think I prefer the Act 2 mix slightly more:

Other than that? I dunno. The first ones that come to mind are Starlight Zone and Green Hill Zone from Sonic 1, the Chemical Plant Zone and Emerald Hill Zone from Sonic 2 (with the Aquatic Ruin Zone just a hair behind), and both versions of Sonic 3's Hydrocity Zone.

I have yet to get around to anything post-Sonic 3, though.

One of my Favourite Tracks in Sonic 2 has got the be the Hidden Palace Zone music.

The reason why I like this track is because of it's mystery, and the story behind it.

Early in development a stage was developed called Hidden Palace Zone, but for reasons unknown it was scrapped (it was presumably a secret level you unlocked once you obtained all seven emeralds). The code for the level wasn't completely deleted from the game however, and game genie junkies were able to access the mysterious zone, which was a bunch of garbled pixel leftovers, and this unused song.

However a beta prototype was discovered in 1998, and it featured this mysterious zone in a more complete form abiet still very incomplete.

Also, I absolutely love the European Sonic CD soundtrack, ALL OF IT!

Guh this is one thing you can never ask me to pick because one thing about Sonic I think has remained relatively up to standard has been it's soundtracks, definitely a few stinkers but on the whole there's some fantastically memorable songs in each generation...

I'll do a run down of each game I guess and my most favorite of each

1: Green Hill

2: Metropolis Zone (despite the music that zone and it's crabs can fu-)

3: (Every single one) No really, there is not one song in Sonic 3 that I can put below the others.

S&K: Lava Reef/Hidden Palace (Sandopolis annoys me but that's about it)

Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn version): Every song except Volcano Valley
Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis version): Diamond Dust

Sonic R: ...No hate, only love (Seriously Richard Jaques, I just like your music)

Adventure: The theme song, what else.

Adventure 2: Live and Learn and the "Vs Biolizard" Song. Just because it is forever stuck in my head as the most frustrating challenge of my youth. I cannot help but get chills everytime I hear it.

Sonic 06: *snort* Uh...Yeah Crisis City I guess.

Secret Rings: ...Okay I lied I can't really name one from this

Sonic Unleashed: Uhhh...hmmm Oh yeah Adabat Jungle Joyride (Day) All the day levels were pretty nicely played to. The warehog levels can go fu- with that bloody combat music.

Sonic and the Black Knight: I never got to play it

Sonic Colours: Aquarium Park, all of them. Haven't felt so good playing a 'water level' ever. And that game just made me smile on the whole, entertaining, simple script with some actually cartoonish sonic for once in like a decade with some great music, fantastic gameplay and pretty neat visuals for a wii game.

Generations: Haven't played it yet been stuck behind a till selling Call of Duty crap forever but most are remixes so...I can't say I'll hate it.

...

I TOLD YOU I COULDN'T PICK!

I think the disparity in peoples' opinions over which is the best track is a real testament to the quality of the soundtracks in those early Sonic games. It's like trying to pick a favourite song off a Beatles album.

Excluding Charli, no one had said Green Hill Zone? For shame! It's a all time classic with it catchy beats!

Thank you. Thank you for ruining Open Your Heart for me....That song is too awesome for fucking ponies ¬_¬

OT: Lava Reef from Sonic and Knuckles
Not a problem! :D, I think it suits them very well, but that's like your opinion man.

(Lava Reef is pretty kick ass! :D)

Sonic music counts for half the music I listen to.

DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE!
Most of the ones with lyrics are just awesome, although cheesy.
