Gun-wise, it'd be a toss-up between close range pulverisers (i.e. DOOM's Shotgun and UT's Flak Cannon) and assault rifles

Still, nothing beats getting a kill with something not designed to kill. Y'know, like crushing them with barrels and such.

Wrench, followed closely by crowbar. Perhaps I have a tool fetish, but there is something magical about busting skulls with a heavy, blunt, metal thing.
Same here, the crowbar is always my first choice. Pistols are right there as well (John Woo anyone?). The Spartan laser is pretty cool, being the only part of Halo I still love.

Shotguns. I've always been an up close and personal player, so a gun that can blow an opponent apart in one or two shots at point blank range is preferable. However, I've always been a fan of all rocket launcher and all melee matches. Brings good memories back from Goldeneye Slapper matches.

Edit: In a close second place behind the shotgun is the magnum equivalent. Powerful up close gun and really gives you that Dirty Harry bad ass demeanor.

Full automatic whatever. I love pumping things full of lead. Be it carrying a turret in Halo 3 to playing a Heavy in TF2.
Gotta second this. Shotguns are fun, sure, but nothing pleases me more than laying down a hailstorm of lead into any unfortunates in my path. Gotta love seeing my foes chewed to pieces by a stream of kinetic-energy projectiles.

SMG well of course its fun, shotgun who wouldn't like the old click click boom, headshoting someone from a cross a map is fun, sticking your knife up their @$$ is fun, but for me you can't beat the perfect throw followed by the flying body yes the nade is my favorite wether it sticks on impact or even the big white screen I don't care the nade is the best

Rocket launchers. Seeing my opponents explode into pieces before me is fun, and rocket jumping is almost like an art form.

Second would be chainguns. Whether it's the Heavy's minigun in TF2, Duke Nukem's chaingun cannon, or UT's ridiculously underpowered PoS, I still love 'em.

I really love snipers and camping.
It's effective and really upsets people.
Nobody likes a camper
I am kinda wierd...I like silenced and stealth weapons, I like laying traps I like Kills-everything-on-screen guns but effin hate snipers and campers...A gun that shots shotgun shells at the same rate of a machine gun+ best weapon ever

it depends on the circumstances;

corridors and room clearance = shotgun
open areas = anything that can spew a million rounds per second ( gattling gun from doom anyone??? )

I think that these choices all stem from my love of the doom series

The greatest weapon of all is the mind...!

No, seriously, the greatest weapon actually is a weapon of mind, namely "Force Grip" in the Jedi Knight series, especially in multiplayer games. Grab that gun-toting enemy, watch him squirm, throw him down into the ravine/chute/lava. Or just wait form him to die in your grip.

Fabulous.

I usually prefer weapons like the Flak Cannon, as it's a short-to-mid range weapon that can kill me as easily as it can the enemy. On the other hand, however, I do have a soft spot for pistols. Whether they're fast-firing and do little damage (Dual Elites) or slow-firing and do massive damage (Always the Magnum. Always), I love them all.

However, my one true love? Explosives. Give my opponents all the guns they want, as long as I can use rocket launchers, grenade launchers, grenades and mines (Timed, Remote AND Proximity, in an ideal world).

I'm going to go ahead and just say any type of shotgun,
because like you said when you're just starting off in the match,
want to warm up a bit, more spread, less aiming! :)
until you feel into it enough to start pulling out the sniper rifles!

It's got to be something explosive! I just love stomping into a room and blowing the hell out of everything. Or maybe a fully automatic machine gun, one of the LMGs in COD4 for example. Or the Heavy in Team Fortress 2.

The bow and arrow (or possibly crossbow). I like the challege provided by the slow "reload" and need to predict the arrows trajectory, not to mention the tactile feel and stealthy silence.

Shotguns, I just love walking/running up to someone and watching their head or upper body explode as I pull the trigger e.g using the flak cannon in UT 2003 (lol just got that game a few days ago). (Silenced) SMG's are pretty cool too when you storm a building in a tactical shooter sneak up behind a gang of terrorists and pump them full of lead :D

Always the medium/long range assault rifles or sniper rifles. In most games I find getting headshots easier when you can observe the target's movement closely, without looking right at it's face. The AK-like weapon in Crysis with a sniper scope is definitely one of my favourite examples.

It's either that or a knife (the machete in TF2). If you're going to advance, do it properly.

The magnum. As in, high-caliber handgun. I could give two shits how impractical or how rarely used it is IRL. That silly bird thing from Israel can fuck off, though -- revolvers and hand-railguns are where it's at.

Also, the battle rifle. A lot of times when I try an assault role with a regular assault weapon, I find myself running into a meat grinder over and over. A battle rifle, though not a sniper rifle, tends to have higher damage, longer range, and better penetration at the cost of slower automatic fire or only semi-auto fire, plus fewer bullets. So I can snipe somewhat comfortably as well as defend myself in close quarters. (An example is the FEAR Penetrator.)
