I hate shotguns, especially in CS or the Insurgency Mod for HL2.
I love pistols. Powerful pistols.

Grenades ftw! however im quite a fan of being sneaky so knifes wrenches crowbars etc. are awesomely cool. the prob here is that weapon balance varies so much from game to game. sometimes the shotty a.k.a. shotgun cant kill some one when its put to their skin and fired, sometimes it can own even at distances (prey gun with yellow ooze). anyway theres my two cents. happy? incidentally i didnt laugh too much at the silent hill review, anyone else in agreement?

for any type of weapon, i'd have to say grenades. be it a frag or incendiary, doesn't really matter. booms are always nice.

Raging bull in Vegas, or any similar weapon (Halo3 Mauler, HL2 Magnum, the pistol in Bioshock, Desert Eagles, GoW Locust Pistol, the P-11 Aqua Pistol in the later Delta-Force games).

Powerful revolvers and pistols make you feel like a cowboy, the limited ammo and rate of fire improves accuracy, and they tend to be the only weapons that give you the feeling of being powerful enough to blow a rhino's skull open. And did I mention feeling like a cowboy?

If such weapons are not available, Flamethrowers (to appease the pyromaniac inside) and Grenades/Grenade-Launchers(for majestic bounces that wipe out campers).

I generally prefer either a sniper-type of weapon or otherwise something that is general all-purpose, the best example I can think of being the Battle Rifle from Halo. I like having a weapon that I can be effective with in just about any situation, but otherwise, give me something with range. The more, the better.

And I love using the sniper rifle up close when I can pull it off, because it pisses off others to no end. But complaining about it marks you as an idiot, because that's the whole point of having different types of guns: Each one tends to be more advantageous than others based upon the situation at hand. No one uses a shotgun at range with the expectation of scoring a kill, and you don't use a rocket launcher at point-blank range unless you're going the suicide-bomber route. There's a word for you to learn the meaning of, and that word is: Strategy.

And guess what? Camping is one kind of strategy. Me, I prefer to take one spot with the sniper, score a kill or three, and then relocate. A competent sniper is difficult to deal with, but one that is capable of always being on the move is even more deadly.

Chain guns, nothing is more entertaining than unleashing a hell storm of bullets on a group of enemies and watch them get torn to bits.

Sinse most games don't contain some form of a mobile chain gun, assault rifles come in a close second for their combined ability to bring someone down at close range with a hail of bullets, or at a distance with a single shot into their skull.

It depends on the game, for me. Usually it's the weapon that is the most versatile. In Rainbow Six Vegas I use a G36 about 90% of the time, because even if it's not always the best in a given situation, it's never useless. I am sad about my poor, rickety fast-shooting AKM-74 in STALKER right now, because even though it's starting to jam all the time from overuse, I miss its ability to get me out of almost any situation, and how silly it looks with its grenade launcher and scope monopolizing the right side of the screen. I will have to have a 21-gun salute with a lesser weapon when it finally becomes too unreliable to use.

Halo 3 doesn't have a gun like this, so I always try to get the best weapon for the situation, and as soon as that situation changes, I get a new one. I rarely hold onto a 'good' weapon if I don't think I will use it very soon. If people are using sniper rifles, I will not hesitate to toss the sword aside for my own sniper rifle. The only exception is Snowbound (I think that's what it's called), where I'm an unapologetic shotgun whore.

I play a Heavy in TF2 because his minigun is useful against pretty much anything besides a Sniper. Again, vesatility is the big things for me, i hate getting caught with my pants down.

Games where you can carry an armory in your coat pocket are not as common anymore, but in such games I still follow this way of thinking, along with a tendency to use whatever has the most plentiful ammo. The shotgun in Doom 3, sometimes to the point I forgot I had more appropriate weapons after letting them gather dust for so long, and the SMG in Half-Life 2, except when AR-2 ammo was plentiful or really big baddies showed up.

Bolt-action sniper rifles, assault rifles, and shotguns. Rocket launchers are cool too :p

Well, I love to beat the tar out of things with axes and wrenches, guess that's why i like playing the engineer in TF2 to much, same with Bioshock. I also like to knife things, making Spy my favorite class. WWII era rifles and guns are always fun. Some more are the Plasmids from Bioshock.

Oh, and I also like 'humili-kill' weapons. Guns that leave your victim in a less-than-dignified position afterwards.

For example, pinning people to walls in Half-life 2 by their crotchs with the crossbow is pretty cool.

Sniper rifle all the way.

Shotguns are useful in some situations.

And finally, there's the assault rifle. Always a good standby. If I don't know what weapon I'll need, I'll grab an assault rifle.

Sniper rifle.

But /only/ if the map (SP or MP) has been designed with snipers at least partly in mind. There's no point hulking around a rifle if all you've got are twisty corridors. Nor if there are only a handful of sniping positions worthwhile.

CS is the best example. Most people who use rifles tend to just use the sniper rifle as a 'golden gun', or CS's version of a rail gun. Not that it's a bad thing - a perfectly fine use of the game meachanics. But I prefer it when sniping is actually sniping though. i.e: Very long distances.

Sure, snipers are camping guns. But there is camping and there is camping. A good sniper knows that any one spot will yield at the most three kills, probably only one, before it's time to up and move on. They'll also be looking for the least obvious spots.

Wolf, ET was pretty good for sniping, on at least some of the maps. Yet to try out the queake version.

Overpowered weapons... usually pistols in those games where (Halo, Gmod) you can snipe people from across the map (big maps like freespace06, using suit zoom in Gmod) with a freggin magnum!
Overpowered weapons... usually shotguns (halo) i mean a 8-gauge??? Thats freggin double the size of a 12-gauge! It fires 15 pellets at once! Thats like your average dual-barrel!
Overpowered weapons... usually snipers, i once played a match in Halo, where every one had a sniper with a 16 shot clip (nomally its 4) 100 bullets in reserve (normally its 24) and the shots fired but those rifles exploded like say TANK SHELLS!

A good sniper rifle to see in a game would be one of the snipers from Ghost in the Shell. Nothing like ripping a target in half from miles away.

Crossows and Bows in general. There's just something about drilling some poor sucker with a foot of solid wood and steel that's immensely satisfying.

"Small accurate automatics"
Is the world imploding from the contradiction yet?

I generally have a tendency towards high fire rates, quite possibly out of a simple quantity versus quality mindset as my general accuracy is, shall we say, not entirely satisfactory.

So in the average game I usually lean towards burst-firing the local SubMachine Gun with reckless abandon (though for some reason I didn't like the Half-Life 2 one at all.. I'm not sure why)

Interestingly enough, my preference for high fire rates usually is in direct contradiction with my secondary preference for range, or my occasional affection for pump-action shotguns.
