I like a lot of the music from the Pokémon series. Here are a few of my favorite themes just from Black and White

Village Bridge theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDFL58k3U6c]
N's Farewell - great for any fans of the piano [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzKRuwKyJmY]
The rather epic sounding ending theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3yYGioc7cY]

And, just to show I also like songs from the older games...

Ronald's theme from Pokémon TCG [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al1TH4WOYCM] which also had an update [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMpWtk0wy7E] for the Japan only sequel

and

My favorite villian team battle theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGMf-72v7bo]

CAPTCHA: over the top

I disagree, Captcha.

There is so much great music in gaming, before voice acting it was the best way to convey emotion in a lot of games. It easily one of my favorite aspects of a game, and I can never just pick one.I will call out one that I played recently though.Bioshock infinite was just a beautiful audio experience all around, and just a plain great game.

I've always loved the Halo series dedication to making the music a core part of the experience. I guess when you've got a Marty O'Donnel on your payroll, you get that kind of awesome.
I agree with that. My personal favourite of his work is Halo 2, specifically:

and

The soundtrack in its entirety is awesome though, but I really like the above two.

As for my own contribution to the thread, I'll say:

Journey(shame on you, Escapist for not having mentioned it yet!):

Age of Empires(1):

HoMM4:

Popolous: The Beginning:

Deus Ex: HR:

i work out regularity to red alerts hell march
as well as some of the music from the total wars series.
and i loved the RTCW soundtrack

i dont know if its the music itself or its timing but the freespace games always had good music. enemy ship jumps in a little fanfare plays and then booming battle music epic every time.
as for backgound music i nevery really got tired of any of the music from freelancer or the elderscrolls games. even after 100+ hours of gameplay

Pretty much anything from Timesplitters. Lo and behold one of the few games credit sequences I actually play through to watch.

There are so many great, great, great video game soundtracks out there that I'll only manage to mention a fraction of them right off the bat. But okay.
I currently listen to quite a lot of music from fighting games. Specifically, King of Fighters XIII, Persona 4: Arena, Street Fighter: Alpha 3 and Guilty Gear. I really love instrumental music, especially instrumental rock, and these games provide that. Well, except SFA3, which is just a nostalgia-trip all over.

..yeah, that kind of music. There's also a shitload of great stuff in JRPGs, as well as the more symphonical music you find in most AAA games nowadays.

I might reply again here, because there's more stuff worth mentioning D:

It seems like the fine folks of the Escapist have covered most of the bases that should be covered already, but the lack of Silent Hill must be corrected.

I love just about every theme Iori had has in the entire KoF series. Good pick.

Anyways, for me, a number of tracks I would have mentioned have been taken, so...I'll try to contribute some others.

This theme always strikes me as completely fitting to the melancholy tone of the whole game. It's a wonderful piece of music.
Great boss theme.
Digital Devil Saga 2's final boss theme. No particular reason why I picked this one, since there is SO much good music spread across the entire SMT series, from the original main games to Persona.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC had some very good ambient music hauntig and dark.

Mirror's Edge soundtrack by Solar Fields is also great but the main menu song is just fantastic and I know the music itself is from Still Alive by Lisa Miskovsky.

And special mention goes to this little song from Half-Life 2.

Battletoads & Double Dragon had some awesome tracks.

MegaMan X - Personal Classics for me, may not have held up as well as I think it did...

Mentioned but without links: Megaman 2

Don't see this one brought up a lot, but it's probably my favorite: Command and Conquer - Tiberian Sun. It's electronic and moody, but it's energetic as hell. Reminds me of the Fight Club soundtrack in a lot of ways.

This one starts at around 1:20. Ambient intro is a bit long, but the mood of this song is a great payoff.

This one has a long intro too, about a minute. This whole song plays out like an adventure though.

Boy do I wish I knew how to hide all this in spoiler tags but I tried that once and failed so here I go and I apologise.

Dear GOD this just makes that level a freaking joy to play! As a matter of fact that's exactly what this song is. The emotion of joy being interpreted through music.

Honestly that 80?s synth sound is just my favourite sound in music. I love it and thank god for the soundtrack to this game.

I can safely say that this is now my favourite piece of music. It's just so calming and paints such a pleasant image in my mind and I have yet to get tired of hearing it. It's actually my default background music now(not that I had any before). Whenever I go to read or draw or heck sometimes even when I am going to bed I will just leave it on repeat.
Oddly enough I discovered a version without any ambiance which is my preferred version but either one will do.

Like no one saw this coming! Seriously we have all said it. This song just wraps up this game perfectly and leaves you with your jaw hanging.

This music did damage I kid you not. If you ever see me in threads going on about my fear of water in games or in real life depending on the circumstances (weeds or in the dark) Now you know the reason WHY!
And yet, likely because of it having such a significant affect on me, it?s one of my favourite pieces of music in gaming.

a soft mellow song that always gets me in a creative mood. Then again the world that it comes with probably helps seeing how it is just full of odd things and pleasant colors.

The perfect stealth music. At least if you're a spy in a tux
Well along with this aswell
I'm just a sucker for that elegant stealth music.

Just the song you want to listen to when you are about to kick ass and have a whole new package of bubble gum.

*shudders* I first heard this in the demo and there it was the music for the school and jesus did that ever make that place unnerving.

And okay now I am just feeling like an annoyance so I will stop with the youtube links

I've seen Dark Souls mentioned, but I'd actually say that Demon's Souls beats it in the music department.

The only theme in Dark Souls that really matched the uniqueness and impact of these themes for me was the final boss's, which is exquisite.
