Hmm, it's hard to commit to any 'favourites' as what pleases me changes on a whim in a cream-puff hurricane. For now, the last thing that surprisingly tickled thine ear drums and swooned pleasantly towards the decayed husk of some abandoned heart clawing its' way back from the depths from whence I threw its' incompetent and self-destructive ass would be the sort-of OST for...well, it involves space, giraffes, heists and steam. And the music is played by an animated robot travelling band in space bars, far cuter than annoying live-action music videos.

I can't guarantee any of the video clips are worth watching, so stick to ear-only.

Honourable mentions to Transistor, Bastion [small]and soon to be Pyre, teemehee![/small] Rayman origins/legends, Some classic game references...some classic music in modern game references. *Sigh* The whimsy is starting to fade now. You know what, ignore all that crap I put.

I'm just going to name a few games that I thought had really awesome soundtracks, and maybe name a few of the songs I thought were strongest in each, but I'm not going to post any links because I don't want to crash the thread.

F-Zero X: Quite plainly the best soundtrack I've ever heard in a racing game, period. The intense guitar rhythms and drum beats really emphasize the speed on the track. In particular, the song used for the "Big Blue" tracks, "Decide in the Eyes", is probably one of the best songs in the game overall, but none of the songs in the game are bad.

Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction: You could probably make an entire thread out of the stuff Michael Giacchino did for various video games, but I'm going to put Mercs here because it gave every faction their own unique identity through their music. The "action" songs(the ones that play when you're actively fighting) are definitely the stronger pieces, with the South Koreans' theme "Hidden Valley Bunker", the Russian Mafia's theme "Family Business" and the Allied Nations' theme "Allied Nations"(yeah, I know) being the best among them.

Burnout 3: Takedown: There were actually a number of songs that were made for Burnout 3 before Criterion got grabbed up by EA and the game switched over to having licensed music. Which is a damned shame, because the songs were damned good. At least they got put into Burnout Paradise so we can actually listen to them in a game. The ones on my mind are the songs "Take Cover", "Red Sky Horizon" and "Tonight This Ends". Again, it's a real pity these weren't actually used in Burnout 3.

And I see someone already mentioned a piece from Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. "Hrimfaxi" was good, sure, but I think there were plenty better. "First Flight", from the mission where you have to fend off waves of Yuktobanian aircraft over Sand Island, comes to mind. So does "Wings of Unity", from the game's penultimate mission at the Belkan city of Sudentor. "Naval Blockade" from the mission where you have to help the Osean fleet break through a Yuke blockade of their port and "Rendezvous" from the mission where you first encounter Yuktobania's Burst Missiles are also good.

Every time there's one of these threads I do the same thing: Ctrl + F "Donkey Kong", verify there are no mentions, proceed to recommend the David Rice soundtrack for the Donkey Kong Country Trilogy on the SNES. Contains some of the finest chiptune music in videogame history.

Definitely the music in Xenoblade Chronicles.

and of course,

Xenoblade Chronicles manages to fit the mood for every type of scene perfectly and give the games scene just that extra little bit of life to them to make the player feel like Bionis and Mechonis are real living breathing place's. love Xenoblades OST so much.

I was always a big fan of the more eccentric video game soundtracks. Jet Grind Radio and Jet Set Radio Future were just electric.

And yeah yeah, some of the tracks weren't composed specifically for the game, but tough luck. it's awesome music and now you're all going to listen to it.

In a similar vein is all the stuff for the Katamari games. My goodness, what eclectic OSTs they were. There are so many good ones here, so brace yourself.

Also, I've been listening to a lot of retrowave and synthpop as of late so both Hotline Miami games (though especially the second) have been great listens.

Also, Deus Ex: Human Revolution had some brilliant tracks, really caught the spirit of the game I thought. They were composed by Behavior AKA. Michael McCann, who also did the equally good Splinter Cell: Double Agent OST.

And while we are on the subject: Chaos Theory! Cannot forget this soundtrack. Composed by the legendary Amon Tobin, I remember reading that he got different musicians to record various instumentals and then he then layered and mixed them all. The officially released soundtrack ended up being somewhat different from in the game music because in game the music was more contextual and and different cues would play, depending on what was happening.

EDIT: Honorable mentions I forgot because I'm an idiot:

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game. Modern chiptune in a game that is basically River City Ransom set in Toronto? Yes, please. Beating up hipsters has never been so fun.

Shovel Knight. More chiptune and it has the fun advantage of translating to metal surprisingly well. I don't even like metal but I could listen to this stuff all day.

Nearly every hymn from Ar Tonelico
Well looks like you got here before me and I would whole heartedly agree. Most of my favourite game music come from games I really like so im not sure its the music I like or the fact it brings back great memories of the game.

Ar Tonelico however is just amazing in its soundtrack. Personally I like the Metafallicas soundtrack best but they are all top notch.

An example of a hymn from that game. My favourite song is one when they are in a town and it just starts with a harp and one of the characters singing then as it goes on more people join in with instruments and other clapping along. Its very different to the hymns but I cannot find it on youtube atm and dont have time to scour to look for it properly.

Any specific music style? I love the soundtrack from Final Fantasy VI in general.

Goddamn! All this music gave me a big nostalgia trip!
I forgot how good Terra's theme was.

Endless Legend has the best soundtrack of any game I've played in recent years. Love this song...
