I gotta say for ground vehicles, I've always loved the original Road Kill from the first Twisted Metal: the handling was just right, the speed was spectacular, the armor was the best of all the future Road Kills and its special weapon was passable enough to live with. Also its scrapped design made the car look perfect for driving into combat. I never liked the driver for him (Capt. Spears... always thought he'd be better for Warthog), but its my favorite overall and probably the most effecient Raod Kill model in the series.

For the air... I dunno. I'm tempted to say just about any airplane from the Supermarine series of RAF airplanes availble in WWII flight sims and shmups because they always get the job done, but I've got more of a sentimental attachment to space-jets and star fighters like the Vic Viper of Gradius and the Silver Hawks of Darius.

The TimberWolf in Mechwarrior 2. You really felt like you were driving a 50-ton nuclear powered robot!

The motorcycles in San Andreas. Those were just fun to ride - much more fun considering you could crash and burn like a mofo and not get hurt :p One of my fav spontaneous gaming moments: riding on a mountain road on a Harley with Freebird playing on the bike's radio.

Mad Dog from the Battletech universe. Many of the MechWarrior games just become silly with that 'Mech, a long-range fire-support 60-ton beast. In my experience, it's far too easy to pick off enemies at a distance in most of the MechWarrior series (#3 was just awful, at max ppc range the AI didn't even trigger).

Of course, the Machine Gun trick has worked since the board game; but in most games a 50-ton is better considering damage/sec versus armor points and speed. In MW2 it just becomes silly, again, with a 12 Machine Gun Mad Dog.

So, I'd say the Machine Gun Hunchback, maxed powerplant and lotsa lotsa lotsa armour. You run straight ahead, deliver more firepower than the AC20 and charge your enemy, bashing him and kicking him and shooting and shooting and .... KABOOOM! Better get jump-jets too.

obviously it would be a mech from MW2.
there's one genre i wish someone would continue PROPERLY...none of this arcade-y dumbed down stuff. i would pay good money for a solid, modern MW2 spiritual successor.

The manta from UT04. Some people may view it as "an alternate way of getting around when the Leviathan is still spawning" but it's definitely my favorite hovering vehicle. What tops it above Halo's Ghost? Well, for starters it can "jump" meaning it doesn't have all the maneuvering problems. Secondly, it can instantaneously drop to the ground. Perfect for slaughtering your way through advancing infantry, or a very quick dodge of an attack.
This. Fast, easy to manouver, you still have good aim and you can do that satisfying little drop-down to kill pedestrians. I just wish everyone else would stay out of it while you're having dogfights with other mantas ~~

Mammoth Tank from Red Alert 2, with 3 stripe promotion. Almost unstopable.

Halo 1 Warthog. Warthog jousting with my brother on silent cartographer level was lots of fun.

The BMX from GTA:SA. Healthier way to travel ;-p Plus was alot more useful getting around in the city.

Apachie helecopter in the desert combat mod of battlefield. It just was so much fun to fly and so few other people could do it well

The florescent, stream-lined, racing suits from Kinetica would have to top my list due to the fact that very little would please me more then being able to scale buildings, travel at speeds in excess of 300mph, AND destroy my enemies with nothing more then my clothing. Also never shrinks in the machine and does not need to be dry cleaned.

Or, you know, maybe the Desert Fox from Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge. Who needs armor when you have cluster missiles?

The multitude of desert vehicles available in Jak 3. The Tough Puppy, the Dune Hopper, the Sand Shark, the Ram Rod, the Desert Screamer... the Dune Hopper was the best, for its super-powered jump and explosive guns.

The attack helicopter for the not communist guys in Frontlines: Fuel of War. I'm a sucker for any helicopters.

The Warthog is an obvious pick, probably because it's pretty iconic as far as the series goes. I also really liked the little hover board from Unreal Tournament 3. Also from UT3 the hover car that you can lower to the ground to chop people in half. Good times.

The car from Half Life 2 is also a favorite. Not the muscle car from Episode 2, just the original one from HL2.

Oh yah! Last but not least in some really old Need for Speed Game you could race as a T-Rex Statue. So much fun.

There are definitely some others but I can't think of them right now.

HL2 Airboat, Rogue Squadron's A-wing, Mario Kart: Double Dash Bullet Car, Monkey Ball, and...not really controllable, but the Ark of Yamato from Okami.

Sultan RS in GTA IV. So much fun doing handbrake turns with that baby. I also loved the Sabre GT.
The F-22 in Ace Combat 6 is pretty kickass too.
