Let The Right One In. Both the book and film are brilliant and although they cut quite a few parts of the book, they still managed the keep the story and the feelings/emotions of the book.
This, a million times over. The book was absolutely fabulous and one of my all time favorites.

The best part of the movie is what they deemed important, and what they filtered out. It kept what was pure about the book and cut out what would have been cinematic drivel.

Where can I see this? Seriously. I. Need. To. Know.
Oooo, anime fan, huh? Or just big on LotF?

Anyway, it's a series called Infinite Ryvius (here, have a look [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinite_Ryvius]) which I thought was unfairly panned by viewers and western critics were a bit *meh* about it as well. But it deals with 'kids and growing up' really well. It takes the setting away from an island to a training ship in space. It's not an entirely faithful adaptation, but the vast majority of the parallels are there (with a few added subplots/character developments because of its length).

His Dark Materials. However only first part (Golden Compass) was made into film.

Neither, I was simply suprised to know such a thing existed heh.

I thought you were talking about a direct adaptation, rather than an anime that is similar/inspired by it. It seems to be worth a look though.

if you dont mind a good book made into a bad film there is "the dark is rising"
never seen the film but according to reviews it strayed so far from the source material that it kept little more than the names of a few characters.

it was a great book for older children but in the wake of harry potter i think studios were picking up anything with brits and magic in.

it might set you apart if everyone else is showing how its supposed to be done you can show how its not.

You'd be surprised what you can find by way of anime adaptations of literary classics. le Comte de Monte Cristo, as I mentioned, Little Women (and, I know for certain that Jo's Boys was adapted as well... though I haven't seen either), Anne of Green Gables... there're a couple others that escape me...

I agree with this.
Though, Misery was a great book and the film was great as well. But the book was just awesome.

I would say Angels of the universe. A fantastic novel maid into a breathtaking film, a real classic.

P.s. Of course that ain't an English language film so I don't know if that will help you any.

It's a pity, too. The film was well made, and it did well outside of the U.S.

Don't know how they could've kept the series PG though.

If you want an example of how not to turn a book into a film I suggest you go check out Eragon, the movie cut out about 95% of the storyline and altered the other 5%.

The Beach.

It's a shame the film was crappy, I fucking love that book. Leonardo DiCaprio was awfully miscast, it just lost everything awesome about the book.
