Dear FBI,

The LEGITIMATE, NON CRIMINAL part of the Internet could not possibly function without personal security or encryption.
It can't. Why?

Because it'd be the Wild West out here otherwise. E-commerce would not exist.
I guaranteed that if you attempted to police the internet as you know it, the very system you use for law enforcement would be COMPLETELY OVERWHELMED by cybercrime in less than a day.

As powerful as the FBI claims to be, they CANNOT POLICE THE INTERNET BY THEMSELVES.
It simply works on a scale that is MUCH MUCH LARGER THAN THEM.

Even China's Great Firewall is constantly under siege from both sides; and that's an idealized "checkpoint/chokepoint system" for traffic either of ingress or egress.

I remember how butthurt the federal government was when they failed to pass legislation that forbid the public from getting access to encryption programs back in the early 90s. Lets not bring that shit up again.

"Grandma Goodie's grandson set up SSL for her email account so others won't break into her email client to send spam! CLEARLY THEY ARE TERRORISTS!!"

You know what REAL Terrorism is? The employment of fear to subjugate others.
People protecting themselves from online surveillance sounds awfully suspicious to you? Does anyone honestly think that most people employ decryption solely to avoid detection from the FBI? Oh fuck no!
We protect ourselves from the literal MILLIONS of "Black Hats", spammers and pranksters that are laboring endlessly to get access to our computers. A legion of people you cannot hope to stop by sheer numbers alone, nevermind collective ability.

This reeks of fascism and desperation. Insert your favorite pithy quote from Benjamin Franklin here. I'm done with this nonsense.

Although, the things in the "what they use the computer to look up" list is horribly obvious and a no-brainer. Someone looking up terrorist literature or chem/bio information could be a terrorist? REALLY?!?!
Or a writer.

Ian Rankin was once trying to write a book including a kidnapping/murder case and was called in for questioning by police because a child had actually been kidnapped close to the area, which Rankin wasn't aware of. Tom Clancy was actually sent information and parts bordering on classified while writing books about nuclear warfare and submarines.

Writers look up a whole lot of weird stuff, especially if they're writing horror/crime/war books. Currenly one of my browser tabs is open as I investigate the rate of decomposition in a thirteen year old girl if she spent thirty years in a duck pond in southern England. I'm researching it because I'm writing a ghost story featuring a thirteen year old who was drowned in a duck pond in southern england thirty years ago, but if someone was just to glance at my browser history they'd probably wonder why the list also includes 'missing persons cases in [my area]' and 'how much damage would a .45 revolver do to a human head?'

According to the Feebies my searches make me a terrorist, according to reality they make me a writer. Thankfully, I'm also British, so the American govervnment can suck it.

So it looks like my thread from a few days ago was quite topical

Well living in America I can say without a doubt that the majority of the people hate our Government for one reason or another. We are becoming a Fascist State like old Italy during WW2, but even more freedoms being taken away and the Corporation having all the power...

Congress is a joke and only a handful in Congress want to do the right thing, but are the minority, and both Democrat and Republicans are paid by lobbyist to claim their intrest instead of adhering the people. Our education is lack with politics for many states and thus make it easier for the gov't, media, and corporation to manipulate...

There are many good things still in our Country and many good people that care for a better America. We are sadly not united as we should be, becuase many feel it is useless to fight, afraid, and have the attitude of not doing anything until it becomes to much of a problem for themselves.

Millions fight every day in America to stop this crap, but just a few million is a drop in a bucket compared to the total of our Countries size and Corprate power having control of so many of our lives.

How long until the grand son of McCarthy rises to power and smites our way of life by accusing girl scouts of being terrorists?
Pft, everyone knows the girl scouts are all radical feminist shocktroops.

[small]The people claiming that aren't joking.[/small]
Everyone knows their Triscuits are the most popular....all the terrorists have to do is slip some rather dangerous chemicals into them and we're fucked.

It's the perfect Scape goat.....
Fun fact: The US military actaully has plans in case of a girl scout uprising. They also have plans for a zombie apocalypse. Here's hoping they read World War Z.

OT: I'm not sure if I should be terrified that the US goverment are considering this, or laughing out loud at the fact that America still honestly thinks its the land of hope and freedom.

The USA is the land of freedom, so stfu and let the FBI force you to be free from privacy.

On a more serious note, the USA is a terrorist organisation.
The definition of terrorism is using fear to make things happen your way (I'm not here to write the full definition, but all in all, this is the definition).

The USA government uses the fear in people of terrorism to have this retarded laws accepted.
They don't use rational reasoning for anything. Every fucking law starts with "Terrorists are dangerous", "Piracy is the internet's terrorism.".

Woohoo! Now I'M a terrorist, says the FBI! I like having privacy, I like shutting my bathroom door, I don't like it when people snoop in on things, holy shit guys! I'm a terrorist!

PFFFFFT, as if! Grow up USA. Grow the fuck up. You went after MegaUpload after your SOPA got shelved, now you're doing this just to try and justify the means of making over 9000 bills in the same 2 damn minutes to try and control the Internet. I hate the USA for very good reasons, and now I have another to add to the list.

Edit: And yeah, land of freedom? Bullshit. Bullshit USA government and FBI. You think you can honestly call yourself the land of freedom after all these bills, and everything else you've been doing? What about that poor 5 year old that got patted down at the airport because she was under suspicion for little to no reason? What about the ability for everyone to feel safe in your country? What about the government actually doing something good for once? Oh, right, sorry. You're too busy taking the piss to actually do something smart. *rant over*

Honestly...

This doesn't surprise me, what surprises me is that we haven't seen the Online Patriotic Intentions Act (sopa with a new name).

Anyone who doesn't agree with Patriot Act is most likely a terrorist (it's not that they are upset the government is pissing on their rights)

Anyone who films government agents/workers is a terrorist or a criminal (if you film a cop breaking the law YOU are the criminal here, not the cop)

Anyone who flies on a plane is most likely a terrorist (we need the TSA to keep us safe)

B---ut I want to be safe from terrorist... here take my 1st amendment rights too. I can't be trusted to not speak out against the government.

The Police State, how's everyone adjusting too it?

Keep up the good work!

Fear mongering and citizen police, nothing could ever go wrong! That's like saying gitmo doesn't represent freedom.

Wow... I just can't formulate a cohesive, intelligent thought regarding this. Our own government has become so paranoid and so frantic to shoe-horn terrorism into internet privacy? Next thing you know, they'll put out a flyer stating that if you eat hot-dogs without mustard, you're a repressed child molester, or if you like cotton candy you're a pedophile. It's like saying that if you lock your house up before you leave, it's because a hooker is chained up in the basement. I hide my screen in internet cafes, and in public because people are extremely creepy when you're doing something interesting. Its a matter of personal comfort, not terrorism. Good Game, FBI, you're just showing off how blatantly stupid you all are.

Oh fuck! I just cleared my history! Quick guys, give me a false identity and hide me in an underground shelter so they don't learn that I'm hoarding Cheez-its for a malicious plan! A plan that may involve feeding them to the public in an attempt to get cheese into their systems!

Okay, let me get serious. Actually no, I can't get serious about this. This is so ridiculous I think it gave me cancer. So if I open a new tab so that my parents don't see the porn on my screen, I'm a terrorist? RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT.

This is... what??
I mean after 9/11 USA went into a pretty tight anti terrorist campaign, AND that is completely understandable since about 3000 people were killed in an instant.
But to get so paranoid as anyone who uses a computer = terrorist
-.-
It makes perfect sense. Terrorist use computers, therefore computers are terrorist tools, therefore anyone who uses a computer is a terrorist! It's only logical. You wouldn't have a hammer unless you needed to hammer a nail would you?

So my dad and I are terrorists; I read Occupy Wall Street's website and he locks out his computer when he steps away from his computer. I guess my brother, who aspires to join the "heroic" ranks of the FBI, will have to indefinitely detain us now.

didn't they say that a culture of fear is what the terrorists wanted to create not so long ago? (okay something along those lines it was a while ago.) Why are they going out of there way to try and make one.

So now using Google Maps is a terrorist act. Same thing if you use GIS to find pictures of buildings. Truely the land of the free and home of the brave.
