My question for you, denizens of the website known as The Escapist, is what are your fears?

Most people have fears. Irrational or rational.

What fears did you get over?

What fears can you deal with and overcome but still bother you?

What fears stop you in your tracks?

I used to be afraid of buildings I was in falling apart over me and burying me. That went away a long time ago. I used to be afraid of spiders. I now merely dislike them up close.

I was traumatized by wasps as a kid and it still bothers me. I try not to be a little girl around them anymore but I'm the wrong guy to ask to clear out the nest in your attic. I am also afraid of hurting people with machines I am operating like cars or the heavy machinery I use at work. I nearly hurt a co-worker a few weeks ago with my forklift when a load I was lifting snapped and dropped heavy shelves in his direction. Scared the crap out of me...

I also have a fear of heights that is pretty specific:

Stairs like that bother me. I have frequent nightmares about the railing disappearing the higher up I go and then the stairs get narrower and narrower and narrower until I fall through the middle and hit the bottom.

I suppose I feel freaked out in the back alley of an unfamiliar city at night with groups of people on either end of it too but that never really happens with me so I guess I can't really call that a regular fear.

That's about it. I can deal with most of them but wasps still test me when they're up close and personal.

It's alright to be afraid some of the time. It is pretty unhealthy to be afraid all of the time. People deal with their fears in different ways.

How do you?

I HATE deep bodies of water. Any water where you can't see the bottom/what's in it or water as far as the eye can see I just will not go anywhere near it.

I'm a real joy on boats obviously. The vast emptiness just really scares me.

Just the usual really - dying alone, deep water, and spontaneous combustion.

I'm working on the first one. Not much that can be done about the others :p

I have a huge fear of squid and octopusses (and sort of cuttlefish, but they're not as tentacley). I have no idea why, but they're just the most freakishly horrible creatures ever. I just have to think of them and I imagine tentacle sucking at my legs or back, it's a really horrible sensation.

Wasps, which isn't that irrational considering their stings bloody well hurt, and you can guarantee that a few will find there way into my bedroom during summer with the window open due to the heat, so I've gotten rather good at whacking them with a newspaper/heavy magazine or using raid on them; I can do battle with them but my hearts always a bit raised when I'm in the same room with them as I try to kill it.

Being around people. =/

It's never been a constant extreme at all times fear, only as bad as say, needing to keep myself calm on bus trips sometimes to avoid mild panic attacks. But that use to be very rare and easily controlled. These days though after getting assaulted on the street by a wandering drunk, it's had more of a negative impact on me than I first thought it did. >.<

Only just started to feel more confident to going outside. =/

When I was a kid I got attacked by a big dog and ever since then I've been afraid of being near big dogs. My fear has subsided a bit, but when a big dog comes near me I still recoil back in fear.
I also have an issue with people getting really close to my face as I will also lunge back. Be it animals or be it people I have an issue with them getting really close to my face.

Deep waters.

Come on, it's the abyss down there. And of course, near drowning experience at the deep does NOT help matters.

I can dig the dark on land, but the darkness underneath the quiet waves? Dude, bro, just no.

Snakes - because holy shit just look at the little fuckers!
Cliffs - which is entirely legitimate as they're very high and need to be treated with respect.
Diving - because I nearly drowned on a sea dive.

Current fear- Spider, specially spiders that are not tiny.

Also my fear for having the internet cut for breaking the rule/ guideline. Ok I don't exactly lived in that fear all the time but I am still playing it safe (the excuse"everyone else doing it" is not good enough for me and it only make you look lazy if you do get caught.

When i was younger i had an irrational fear of horror movies especially zombie movies. I used to be afraid to go to sleep to close to graveyards(which are frickin everywhere) for fear of them rising up to eat me. Now i'm a huge zed/horror fan but i still don't like graveyards much.

Still afraid of heights/flying to this day not sure if i can ever conquer that fear

Failing, it has become much less of a hurdle and more of a spring board in my mind.

I used to be afraid of death but now I'm not.

I do worry about other people dying though.

Other than that I don't have any fears.

I used to be afraid of elevators. I got over it.

I also used to be afraid of flying. I didn't get over it. But whiskey makes it go away for the moment.

That sounds more like an accident than something *YOU* did. Don't blame yourself :).

I used to be afraid of the dark as a kid. It wasn't something I "conquered" really... It just went away as I got older.

What fears did you get over?
I used to have a small degree of stage fright, but nowadays, I tend to be pretty confident when I perform.

What fears can you deal with and overcome but still bother you?
If I had to find something that fits into the category, then I guess fears of inadequacy, particularly as a performer. Nowadays, I don't think about it too much, but I still am never where I want to be.

What fears stop you in your tracks?
Stinging insects. The sounds of bees/wasps/yellow jackets/etc. buzzing literally makes me want to puke, and if one is near me, I end up absolutely frozen in fear. Put me near a nest/hive/whatever of them, and I think I would have a complete anxiety attack.

I have a phobia that I will break all of my teeth. In a series of horrific ways. I stopped riding a bicycle because whenever I went downhill, I was convinced that I would go flying over the handlebars and smash my teeth on the ground.

They're all very much after that.

Fear of failure. The worst part is that I consciously understand that mistakes lead to success, yet here I am struggling with a report; not on research, but on finding the right way to say something and the right (amount) information to put in.
