Feeling left out of Gaming Culture

So this might be controversial, but I don't mean it to be. Actually, if you disagree that's good.

I'm a PC gamer, I'd like to think because I believe it's the best platform I could choose. While it may or may not, for various reasons, I'm not actually a PC gamer by choice, it's due to personal necessity, not due to a belief that it is a better platform then the rest.

So I'm a PC gamer, and proud to be one, but it has a drawback that neither the xbox or Ps3 have.

I feel utterly left out of the majority of Gaming culture, as a PC gamer, and especially when it comes to the media, like what the Escapists features here, or Gametrailers, or PennyArcade, etc etc. The list could go on and on.

As a PC gamer I feel marginalised by the gaming media... call me paranoid, but I feel it.

Any other gamers see what I'm talking about?

That makes sense. When I was solely a console gamer I was left out on a lot of the main PC games. It wasn't to such an extent that you may feel, but it was there.

I'm always a console generation behind on purchasing games.
Though I own an Xbox 360 I only own 2 games: Mass Effect 1 and The Orange Box.
I don't like paying $60+ dollars for games as I have very little money, so I don't mind being patient.
Plus most of the time greatest hits editions or special editions get released as well with more content and I am rewarded for my patience.
Sure, I may not get to be in the loop with all the latest buzz, but I play for single player not multiplayer so I don't notice it too much.

There are also PC gaming websites. They are secret though so I can only tell you if you show me your PC gamer badge and tell me the passcode.

I don't really think the media is purposely excluding the pc-crowd.
It's because of the lack of mainstream pc-exclusive games.
I might be completely wrong because I've been part of the Playstation-crowd for a long time, but that's just my two cents.

But yeah, more often than not people are surprised when I say that you can play more PC games than Runescape and Generic Tower Defence Clone #579532.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the fact that many PC ports are absolute bullshit. Play Saint's Row 2 and you'll see what I mean. (You need some kind of jesus computer to run that thing.)

I mean thank god for Valve, because without them I think the PC would only have bad ports (like MW2), casual games, and MMOs.

Im a mixture of both I love my consoles but I do most of my gaming on my pc. From stand alone to my mmo's it is rough. It almost feels like I have to throw in that I do play console games like x-box and wii and ds to feel like a true gamer when in reality any game I currently enjoy makes me one. I think its more on me though and what I allowed myself to be spoon fed on what true gaming means and it doesnt help that being a chick most dont think I game anyway lol.

This "culture" only applies to PC users - console gamers play for a few hours a week for fun with friends, it's the PC crowd that dedicate terabyte after terabyte on forums, servers, clans, voice programs, etc, etc, etc. When I played PC games I don't know how many 'communities' I was a part of, forums I read, and so on, whereas now I do nothing on t'internet bar the usual news sites, e-mail and Facebook, same with everyone else I know (except for the odd person I know who plays WoW, and the 2 or 3 who play PC games). I only happen to post here by clicking a "hot" thread once a week when getting my games news.

There is no culture to miss out on. There's clans, and there's the clanless, and there's no other integrating forces out there.

Like this forum for instance, there's nobody talking to each other here. Just the OP post, and people responding to the OP, no back and forth, and no relationship beyond the first reply, and the rare second reply.

There may be a scant few forums that are less populous where it's small enough for people to recognize you, but they are few and far between.

I'd suggest joining a clan, or finding a better use of your time. Building internet relationships just doesn't get a good enough return on investment compared to other uses of your time. Maybe check craigslist for a local gaming club? Possibly Meet-up? Maybe start one of your own? I think most people game in isolation anyway, I haven't had "gaming friends" in almost 10 years.

That's fairly pessimistic... I mean I would point to the escapism meetings that occur, but beyond this website, I have been in clans, I regular servers and such, and I run a Corp in Eve; but this doesnt address the issue I raised, I'm not saying I'm lonely, I'm saying that I feel out of the loop of mainstream gaming...

I second that, with the note that, while you may make some good "gaming friends", this type of friendship only lasts as long as you play the game in question, in the large majority of the cases. I should know, I've been into browser-based games for years now.
