On topic, once you whether the school exams, Uni generally improves everything. Just don't waste the opportunity. Don't worry at all about the ex's new bf being at the same Uni, either he's not in your year (OP didn't specify) , so you'll never see him, but even if he is, avoiding someone is so easy at Uni you should be able to manage it almost without concious effort.
At least you haven't crashed and burned yet, it's not something I'd recommend.
I personally favour a few drinks to cheer myself up, case in point tonight, I've been unable to add anything to my far from finished dissertation essay for 4 days now. But after a couple of Scotches, I feel a lot better about it.
