New Hampshire is the best, so sales tax, no income tax, no helmet laws and no seat belt laws. Live free or die suckers!

California for life! Best state in the world.

World class slopes. World class beachs, tallest waves outside of Hawaii. Some of the tallest trees in the world in some of the most amazing redwood forests. San Fransico, LA, and San Diego. Need I go on?

We're also in the ten of the world's best economies.

I saw one of these that put us even with France, I'm not sure if it was older or newer than this one.

The Worst? Alabama.

Texas is destroying our educational system. That alone wins it "worst state."

Best. I love New England, but I don't think I could narrow it down much further.

"NU-UH, MY STATE IS THE BEST!"

I think people will generally go for where they came from/live/lived previously or a great place they went on holiday....

I still wish I had a pic of one of the serial stabbing headlines "Man stabbed in eye socket scared to death."

I agree with OP that Michigan is the worst state to live in.

Mississippi is the worst. They are one of the worst states for education, they have severe racial tensions, and they are incredibly poor. In fact they they are the worst and lowest for pretty much everything.

Except for obesity, in which they are the highest.

The best? I'd say New York. While i live in Massachusetts now, I think New York has a decent economy, population, scenery, and other things.

BUT! Because I'm one of those people who refuse to take any side in any argument, let's just all agree that each state has positives and negatives and its impossible to tell which state is truly the worst. Hooray for indecision!

Forget worst state; from my experience (a dozen countries across three continents), Arkansas is the worst place I've ever been.

Honorable mention: The rest of the south.

Hard for me to judge an entire state without exploring the whole thing, honestly. I know I don't like the megalopolis of the eastern seaboard, it seems overcrowded yet horribly lifeless to me. I also don't much like the general attitudes of humankind residing in the infamous "bible belt"... but of course the truly, annoyingly zealous among those folks are actually just a vocal minority.

I can say one thing for certain though. I hate swamps. Every time I've been to Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi or Florida, I've been in a fucking swamp. Hot, humid, no breeze for days at a time... fuck swamps. Not to say that's all that exists in those states, but that has been my experience with them (which, admittedly, was always just military training, so of course they took me to the most miserable backwater hole in the state).

As for states I love... anything bordering the Pacific and not too crowded. I've been all around the world, to many different climates created by many different types of topography and bodies of water, and there truly is nothing like living next to this particular body of water. If I leave it again, it won't be by choice. I want my ashes spread there. From a coffee can.

Worst: Utah. Need I say more?

Best: Hmmm, I wanna say Texas because I'm from there. It certainly brings a lot to the table, what with a ton of fortune 500 companies, number 1 in wind energy, and Red vs Blue... still, it is pretty warm down there. Maybe Connecticut. It seems like a nice place to live, and I don't think I've ever heard any complaints about it unless all the rich people in America live there. Which isn't really a complaint.
Apparently Utah drivers are the worst in the whole country. I hear people coming from CA complaining about how braindead our drivers are all the time.
That's impossible! Rhode Island drivers don't even stop at stop signs!

OT: The top 3 states I honestly can't stand are California, Arizona and Mississippi.

I can't stand California due to how incompetent the government is with dealing with the poverty, the underfunded schools and crime in their cities.

Arizona just plains sucks

And Mississippi legislators are just plain insane.

The best states: In my opinion, that would be Washington, Massachusetts and maybe New York or Pennsylvania.

I don't think it was the fear that killed him. I think it was the knife in the head. ;)
I was going to make an argument for any one of a couple southern states for worst in the Union, but someone at the start of the thread reminded me about all of Arizona, so Arizona.
Best state: am I allowed to say DC? Because other than the high cost of living, I effing love DC. I would say Maryland, but I'm not too familiar with most of the state and Virginia has NoVa, so eff that. I don't know. I'll have to ponder on my favorite state for a little while.
Also, to the guy who said that Georgia has a good food culture, what part of the state are you looking at? Most of Atlanta is just breaking out of the shell of chain restaurants and fast food and most of the notable places are either bbq or burgers.

Truer words have never been spoken. This state is shit, and I'm moving out as fast as my legs can take me.

I'll probably go with Washington, New York or California as the best. I've loved all my trips to all three, and they apparently have amazing governments (California is debatable) compared to the shithole I call home.

As a New Englander myself I can say (Without bias of course) that Massachusetts is the best state in the country. Just because we started the Settlement of America, Revolution, Industrial Revolution, banning of slavery, American Constitution was based on our Constitution, caused the Constitution convention in which the Constitution was written, center of the transcendentalist movement and abolition movement and first state to legalize gay marriage. So yeah we're pretty badass.

Worst State: Can I say the entirety of the Depp South...No? okay then umm... Florida. Just cause Florida is just the place were old people go to retire so its pretty much useless.

So far I've seen some negative responses about my state (Arizona), and honestly, it's not that bloody terrible.

The worst: Wyoming, I was born there and there isn't a damn thing to do there. I hope you like wind and boredom.

The Best: New York. That place is just awesome, and I've meet some really awesome people from NY. Plus, I think NYC is the coolest place ever.

I agree with you, but one change: Southern Michigan is the worst. Stagnant economy, dysfunctional legal system, and skyrocketing crime. All compressed into Lansing, parts of Ann Arbor, Flint, and Detroit.

The north just has tourism, fishing, and farming.

Best? Possibly West Virginia or Pennsylvania. Beautiful Land, kind people.
