Keeping to the rockier side of things, meaning no pop like Rihanna or Avril TheVigne or girlie-girl music like Sarah McLachlin and Jewel, here's some good ones to check out:

Old-School Ladies:
* Ann Wilson (Heart) - Classic track: "Crazy on You" [http://youtu.be/V44HiAX91Hs] (Yeah, there was a time when Ann wasn't obese.)
* Pat Benatar - "Heartbreaker" [http://youtu.be/jP0SnhtXVfk]
* Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) - Singularly seductive voice. Hot track: "Tattooed Love Boys" [http://youtu.be/CF_kUB_mdmA]
* Deborah Harry (Blondie) - Hot track: "Dreaming" [http://youtu.be/TU3-lS_Gryk]
* Christina Amphlett (Divinyls) - "I Touch Myself" is the song everyone knows, but their first three albums smoked their breakthrough album. In the beginning, Amphlett was a feral presence with bad teeth, but totally awesome. (Courtney Love admitted that she ripped off her signature "kinderwhore" look from Amphlett.) Hot single: "Boys in Town" [http://youtu.be/DMSyumchMWA]
* Cherie Curie (The Runaways who also had Joan Jett and Lita Ford in the band) - Signature song: "Cherry Bomb" [http://youtu.be/pMDn6V7ZLhE]

The Newer-School Girls:
* Maja Ivarsson (The Sounds) - Their first album sounded like it was recorded in 1983 and then fell behind the control room couch until it was found and released in 2002. This is off their 3rd album, but I love the title: "No One Sleeps When I'm Awake" [http://youtu.be/8KN1FlrxQRk]
* Justine Frischman (Elastica) - Haters tried to claim her boyfriend (Damon Albarn of Blur) ghostwrote her songs, but considering Blur never had anything as good as Elastica, that's doubtful. Hot track: "Stutter" [http://youtu.be/0ie4x8hWYYE]
* Taylor Momsen (The Pretty Reckless) - No one takes her seriously because she was an actress on Gossip Girl and tries waaaaaaaaaaay too hard to look slutty, BUT she's the real deal on vocals and the songs are solid. She's like Cherie Curie 2.0. Hot track: "Miss Nothing" [http://youtu.be/hFlHsKExcYg]

Ones Almost No One Has Heard Of:
* Skin (Skunk Anansie) - What sounds like Pat Benatar and looks like an black lesbian skinhead from England? This one. First album was a mixed bag, but "I Can Dream" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJRIY9U4zhQ] RAWKS!!!
* Noelle LeBlanc (Damone) - CRIMINALLY under-appreciated band; find their "Out Here All Night" [http://youtu.be/TBqoHfeRNaE] album and love it. Their 3rd album was a letdown and they're defunct. Pity.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch right now and I've left out some who aren't rocky enough (e.g. Kim Wilde), but it's a decent sampler.

I am quite surprised you could not think of at least 1. Although, funnily I can't think of another one to add the list.
Then why the surprise ....?

Oh thanks ... just as I had forgotten about them *eye twitch*

There best song is bring me to life 'cos for a brief moment in time you can believe she is going to die ...

More on topic: Who knew there are so many female singers out there? Thanks guys and gals
Well I'm surprised you could not get 1. I am not surprised that I cannot think of 1 that has not been mentioned as the ones I know have all been mentioned.

Not a fan of female metal singers myself. Generally don't think it fits, but there are some great ones out there.

Perhaps already mentioned;

It's Turunen. *Death glare of doom, hissing, and all that*

As far as Nightwish goes, the new girl isn't bad, she's still leagues better than your average female modern music star, but, uhh...Tarja left some shoes behind that Anette could never fill. It's plain impossible.

Captcha: evil genius *rubs hands, twirls mutache, snickers like Dick Dastardly*
personally I think it depends

I mean the original girl had a very "opera" type voice..which was good, the though personally I prefer the uhhh...hmmm "less opera" soundign voice...its not of a style thing, you know? and even then it depends entirly on what mood Im in

There used to be a band called Necro Sadistic Goat Torture that was female fronted. Think Angela Gossow but with a deeper voice and you've got a pretty good idea.

But like people have said, there are actually loads. It's a bit of a trend in the symphonic or gothic metal genres.

Synergy is a female fronted "Power Metal" band that has Alexi Laiho on guitar. If you're into this sort of music I suggest checking out the song 'The ***** Is Back', it's quite catchy.

I have just been on a paramore video (I have no idea why 'cos I don't like them) but I rad this comment on it "A rock band with a girl vocalist. AWESOMEEEE".

My immediate reaction was "that is clearly not true, there are loads like ...." then I blanked, I could not think of a single example. I do know there was a female guitar player in coal chamber though.

So feeling like my ipod is a just a little bit of a sausage fest I am asking you lovely people to recommend me some good female bands.

The thing is I have a very fussy musical taste, I the very heaviest stuff I like is hatebreed, so no cannibal corpse. My fav groups are slipknot, dope, seether, soil, mushroomhead ... anything around that kind of area.

Edit: Just thought of Pink and Avril but they are too ... pop-py for my taste.
Dude, screw all that pansy crap. You need some Blood Ceremony and Serpent Cult!

The Cranberries, Blondie & Joan Jett spring to mind. After that I need to think really hard.

I'd say Courtney love, and the pixies. Courtney actually made some good music. That's regardless in her possible involment of Kurt's dead and regardless the non-talent she married now.
