Hmm, Two that I know of are Battlelore and Midnattsol. Battlelore is about the Tolkein universe while Midnattsol is Norwegian(?) Folk lore. I like both very much, though I'm not sure if they're what're you're looking for =p

Well there is Beth Gibbons, if you consider Portishead to be rock. Same goes for Sharon Van Etten, Nouvelle Vague and Bat For Lashes. Then there is Kim Deal from The Pixies and Sonic Youth has apparently had a variety of female vocalists, though I think Kim Gordon is supposed to have been their main one.

Elena Seigman, Lacuna Coil, and Flyleaf.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head that I would recommend.

Screaming Females is probably my favorite at the moment, the frontwoman is an amazing, and I stress amazing, guitarist, probably the best I've ever seen when I saw them live. If you don't mind foreign stuff, High and Mighty Colors is pretty awesome (Japanese). There's also Eyes Set to Kill (has screaming spread liberally throughout).

Lets get old school in here!
They are actually good friends with Motorhead, so give em some cred.

Also, for those wanting something harder, Genitorturers maybe?

Maybe not to your taste - and slightly obscure - but one of my female vocalists:

And yes, they have been Lego's musical playthings for a while, but once you're past that, they're pretty damn good if you ask me.

FYI, Youtube links are something I don't get, so you can have a link instead

Well the obvious ones are

The Runnaways
Lita Ford
Joan Jett
Heart

You could add Fleetwood Mac in there too I guess....

That's off the top of my head

If you want something more modern there is always Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

To Mera -- English based prog metal outfit with Julie Kiss on lead vocals .

Very talented musicians, and a total wee hunny singing. Chatted with some of the band a few years back when they supported Kings X at Electric Ballroom in Camden London. Very down to earth guys and girl .. well worth a listen.

You got Arkona as well.

Well if you want a list:

Lori Lewis (Aesma Daeva, Therion), Sarah Jezebel Deva (Cradle of Filth), Doro Pesch (Doro... derp), Kim McAuliffe (Girl School), Maria "Tristessa" Kolokouri (Astarte), Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill), Floor Jansen (After Forever), Lotta Höglin (Beseech), Karen Gilligan (Cruachan), Alison Mosshart (Dead Weather), Annlouice Loegdlund (Diablo Swing Orchestra), Liv Kristine (ex-Theatre of Tragedy, Leaves' Eyes), Nell Sigland (Theatre of Tragedy), Helena Iren Michaelsen (Trail of Tears).

Also check out Penumbra and Sirenia since they have had a lot of female vocalists over the years.

Is there anything about Paramore that can be described as 'awesome'?

Christina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil is pretty awesome, and so is Courtney Love [sub]kidding.[/sub].

My first thoughts would be Gatja (Probably Hard Rock) and the Stone Coyotes (Rock). Stevie Nicks wouldn't be too far behind, even if she's not exactly heavy in any sense. Half the World, Tribe, the Breeders (and to some extent the Pixies), Throwing Muses, Within Temptation, nightwish (because everyone sees "Amaranth" and assumes I like them), Lacuna Coil, Go Betty Go, the Donnas, Sahara Hotnights, Betty, the Irresponsibles (They do the Spoony Experiment theme, "Break Me,") and....

Well, do I need to go on?

I have just been on a paramore video (I have no idea why 'cos I don't like them) but I rad this comment on it "A rock band with a girl vocalist. AWESOMEEEE".

My immediate reaction was "that is clearly not true, there are loads like ...." then I blanked, I could not think of a single example. I do know there was a female guitar player in coal chamber though.

So feeling like my ipod is a just a little bit of a sausage fest I am asking you lovely people to recommend me some good female bands.

The thing is I have a very fussy musical taste, I the very heaviest stuff I like is hatebreed, so no cannibal corpse. My fav groups are slipknot, dope, seether, soil, mushroomhead ... anything around that kind of area.

Edit: Just thought of Pink and Avril but they are too ... pop-py for my taste.
Dude, screw all that pansy crap. You need some Blood Ceremony and Serpent Cult!
Well if I ever can't sleep I will put these on 'cos oh my golly gosh are they slow. Make Gloomy Sunday by Billie Holiday seem happy, sorry but not for me.

I think I will stick to my "pansy crap" ...

It's Turunen. *Death glare of doom, hissing, and all that*

As far as Nightwish goes, the new girl isn't bad, she's still leagues better than your average female modern music star, but, uhh...Tarja left some shoes behind that Anette could never fill. It's plain impossible.

Captcha: evil genius *rubs hands, twirls mutache, snickers like Dick Dastardly*
You and I need to be friends if you're as into Tarja as I am.

On-topic: Tarja. Seriously.
