From the few bands I have heard that have female growlers, like Arch Enemy, Holy Moses, Gallhammer, and The Agonist, I think they are pretty okay. They have a certain sound to their voice that male vocalists don't, and I kind like that extra texture they bring. I love seeing women in metal, and I really want there to be more, since rock as a whole seems to have a chronic lack of females. Diversity ftw. :p

Tarja is pretty much a god.

My only complaint (and it's a minor one) is that her accent occasionally makes the words a bit hard to make out, particularly in the early Nightwish stuff. But her range and tonal control usually make me stop caring about silly stuff like words :p
See now this is exactly what I can't stand to listen to in female singers. I know, she has talent, but to me, how high pitched it is, it just gives me a headache.

Lee Aaron, *****, Chastain, Doro, Holy Moses, Crystal Viper, Girlschool,..

Maria Sjöholm rocks! :)
Oh wow, someone else who knows Drain STH!!! I saw them live in '99 at a free concert in Ft. Lauderdale. A chick metal band that literally closed the concert, both because of rain, the fact that they were the last band AND because the crowd went ballistic. It didn't help that there was a supermarket across the street from the park and people bought bottled beer and brought it over to the concert area, consumed it and then proceeded to use it as a mosh tool. A friend of mine got his head split open and there were quite a few people on the ground motionless after the crowd dispersed. Suffice to say it was the last free concert that radio station ever did.
OT: Otep is one of my favorite singers. That ***** can growl... she scares me.

Straight Line Stitch is pretty good as well as others mentioned like Kittie, Otep, Lacuna Coil and Halestorm(they aren't exactly metal more like hard rock but they are still good). I don't give a shit about labels like metalcore or whatever. If they are good and kick ass I listen to them.

I've always thought of Otep (and, to a lesser extent, Kittie) as pretty decent proponents of Slipknot-ish nu-metal.

Operatic stuff isn't really my thing, but I caught a Nightwish set at Download last year and it was epic.

If you're looking for female-fronted extreme metal that can stack up against their male counterparts, Angela Gossow from Arch Enemy is a good shout, but Cerebral Bore are insane.

I'd like to hear some more decent female-fronted heavy bands, screaming or not.

Also, I'd question if you could actually tell this is a female screamer if you couldn't see her in the video:
Holy sh..
That is excellent how could that fly under my radar for so long? Thank you for posting it
I'll second that. Damn.

The only other female vocalists i listen to are Arch Enemy and some Delain (although they are more rock) since they will be at a festival i will be attending.

As for "what do i think" of it, as long as the music is good, i don;t care if its got a female or male vocalist.

Do have to say Arch Enemy got way better with Angela.

I second Cerebral bore, I did not realize that Cerebral bore had a female vocalist until i saw one of their videos, and even then it took me a while because of the way she dresses.

YES! I saw them on a side stage at Ozzfest one year. I can't remember which year atm because I slept since then! XD
Theirs was the only T-shirt I bought that concert, and I just looked at it and it doesn't have a date on it either.

Funny about that, Maria Sjöholm is the only singer I have ever flashed and the only person I have ever had sign my breasts! LMAO! I wish I could remember more about that concert, but I had ENTIRELY too much fun to remember most of it.

I do remember we almost got crushed during a stage rush, and we were 13 rows from the stage and bodies were flying everywhere when a bunch of large guys formed a barrier behind us and were throwing the people coming down on us as they came at them and many people went to the hospital that day. That concert was crazy. LOL!

This thread needs more bands that aren't metalcore.

Like Thorr's Hammer. A band that pretty much proves that death growls are gender-neutral.

Ninja'd. Amazing vocals and great band, too! I hear she was only in her teens at the time, too.
