Probably the same reason that its harder to find girls in Tabletop RPGs then dudes. Games were initially restricted to a fairly niche audience and they generally focused on things that were normally more "boyish" then "girlish." There is a whole paper that can be written on gender definition in society here but in short games are still straddled with a stigma that, among other things, defines it more as a boy thing then a girl thing. In reality, the last survey I checked said there are more female games then male gamers (the casual market is predominately females if I'm not utterly mistaken) but its still subconsciously branded with the idea of a "this is for dudes."

Girls do game shut up about this.
I was at Wow: Cataclysm night release at my local gamestop there were about 300+ people there and every third was a woman. My wow guilds active mebers ~28 people of them 6 are confirmed girls, in the same gaming community that I am part of there are in total of 10 girls of total of ~45 active members.
Ok, so you're saying the MAJORITY are NOT female? So, you're actually saying the same thing as I did, but I should shut up about it?

Uhh.
Eh???
Shut up was mainly refering to the common topic of girls in gaming. Girls do play games!!!
I was merely pointing out that they exist, I was never referring them to be majority? Or what are you on about here??? I am just sick of hearing this topic pushed around from left and right...

Alright. I think we got to a bad start here, let me start again...

OK why I think is the reason why girls don't own the title of majority in gaming...
I have witnessed lot of this behavior that I am going to describe here.
Every time a girls passes in to gaming lobby and reveals that she is a girl, she gets bombarded by the majority of males... That are apparently testosterone buffing morons that do sexist verbal assaults towards the minority of female players. Telling them that they suck because they are female (which isn't true since there are professional womens gaming teams), when they lose they make up excuses of taking it easy since they are girls. Bombarding them with sexual innuendos or other sexual harassment with a though of being some type of alpha males.

In other words, why I think we lack women in our gaming communities.
First: Because male players (the dominant force) are not welcoming them!!! Every time you insult a female player you are making this situation worse and making yourself an ass! Second: The market ins't inviting them to the mainstream gaming, women are described as over sexual symbols who wear armor thats armor value goes up when it covers less of their bodies, in games they are a most of time either described as dominant sex goddesses or weak and pafetic (Which is not true!!!). If we want more women to the mainstream gaming, we must welcome them as equals, not raise them to the top ladder for their sex or push them out for it!

I am really sick of the majority of gaming world, the primitive behavior of trying to achieve constant sexual pleasure or dominance is sickening me. Males are acting like primitive beats, I am embarrassed for my gender, you act like you wouldn't have any impulse control, it is sad! I believe human should be able to control hes/hers body no matter what is the situation , there are situations where it is not possible admitted, being in pain, being threatened or afraid these are worthy reason in which you can be excused for losing control. But internet anonymity is a situation in which it is not acceptable. Even tho you got statistical change of succeeding and get your surrounding to agree with you, it is not acceptable!!!

If you go and say: "Well I don't do it, I respect girls in any situation", well go an show it! NExt time you see girl getting harassed for her sex, help her defend her, if she says "I don't want you to help me" respect her wishes. Speak positively about gender diversity in games and gaming community! Make smart consumer decisions on your games! "Do I want to buy the game which I know is mediocre, but got a picture of a over-sexualized character on the cover". GO and talk to others and to game developers (if you can) about not over-sexualizing the games to appeal the primitive gamer so they could get a quick buck with it.

I am sorry if I have offended anyone here, but you shouldn't get offended by this unless you know you know that you do not respect girls in gaming, or even worse in general.
"You got negative view on people..." Yes I know, you do not need to point that out. Saddening part is that they people always fill my view of them.
"You are not respecting girls here at all by separating them..." I am a male you are a female, we are equal, we aren't equal, you aren't better, I am not worse, we are the same yet we are the different, you are 1/1 I am 3/3 we are both equal but we are not the same. Get my point?
"You gay or something??? lol!!!" No, I am asex, and I see nothing wrong with gay people, and you shouldn't discriminate them in/from our gaming community let alone discriminate anyone to begin with.

Respect everyone who is part of your community, no matter what they look like, what they are or what they do!
This world has enough problems to begin with lets not start more, at least not until we have solved the current ones.
You are not important , you are one, I am one, she is one, he is one, we are important !!!

Sorry of the rant, I just wanted to get it all out.

Speaking as a girl, most girls just aren't socialized into playing video games. They're never introduced to games. Think about it; how often do you see parents buying game consoles for little girls? People don't expect girls to be into games, so they never give them a chance to play games and see if they like them growing up. I myself probably never would have been given a console if it weren't for the fact that my male cousin had one and my parents realized I liked playing it when we were visiting them.

It's seen as something inherently male and meant for boys, so that cycle perpetuates itself starting with parents.

Yeah, that's cool, mate. As it happens we agree, in essence.

A large part of my wanting to open this little chestnut up again was infact to help people see how thier real wrold choices and predelictions can be exclusive, and not in a good way.

It's high time the men of the world learn that wonderful word 'respect'. Respect for others, absolutely, but more so respect for themselves. A man who holds high, sincere respect for himself, will not debase himself to disrespect others. (Well, it goes for anyone really, but us men seem to be a little more gulity in this regard.)
