First of all, I never fully played through FF7, I only have a vague idea what it's about and the game doesn't really occupy any place of relevance in my heart. However, I also recognize that a lot of people adore the game and would really like it remade in current gen technology. And I have to admit it would be nice to maybe play it at long last (the graphics always turned me off the original).

For the past few months there has been a steady stream of news articles on both gaming sites that I follow (Escapist and Kotaku) relating to the FF7 remake. I don't remember seeing them before, at least not to this extent. First it was that they aren't going to make it, then they said they'd like to make it, then it was that they can't afford to make it and now it's that they're looking into making it [http://kotaku.com/5499449/ceo-well-explore-the-possibility-of-final-fantasy-vii-remake]. At first I didn't care, but now it's starting to bug me a bit...

Am I the only one who finds this to stink quite a bit of hype building? Playing "hard to get" and teasing, trying to make it eventually seem like they are giving in to the demands of their fans (because they love them oh so much [/sarcasm]), while at the same time knowing the damn thing would practically print money? I'm roughly 90% sure that they are already making it and that we're likely to see concrete info about it by the end of this year.

What do you think? Am I crazy or might I be on to something?

Also, on a related note, any other gaming press scams that you can recall?

Heck, I don't care if you're crazy. As long as you're right, you're all the same to me. Everything will mellow out at that point, and all will be well.

as long as it comes out on the 360 (mostly because if it were exclusive that would be hilarious).

You're probably right. They'd make waaaaay too much money from it to not bother making it. They probably want to get everybody excited, and get everyone to pre-order it, and then it won't be anywhere near as good as expected.
Can't think of any more right now...
Aside from adverts making games look a lot better than they are, I can't think of any press scams...
I bet I'll remember one as soon as I post this.

It's the usual Square Enix cock teasing. It was also the conversational equivalent of a nipple slip at a launch party by one individual. They made a tech demo for the damn game for the PS3, knowing the hubbub it would cause, then waited for a small aeon before finally denying it was in production.

Having played FFXIII, I no longer have faith in their ability to remake it without cutting all the enemy diversity and maiming the already confused story line (see: Crisis Core) for the sake of shiny graphics. Would I like to see a faithful remake with a combination of 7 and 13's combat systems? Of course. Will it happen? I sincerely doubt it. They've re-released it on PSN like they did with 6 on the PS1 and I'd say that's all they'd be willing or even able to do with it.

yeah that would literally print money...more then likely all the old gamers would buy it because they loved it, and even older gamers would buy it to laugh at it and be nostalgic how it doesn't compare to "ffVI or the older ones" and they would get the whole generation who missed that game or didn't want to play it because of its age

so that would be a massive amount of fucking purchases, probably would outsell ff13

Why is everyone so sure that a FF7 remake is a golden ticket? Is there REALLY that much demand for a remake of this game? I'm not trying to put the game down (personally I found FFVIII to be better but whatever) but to me a game should only be remade if the original version is very rare or hard to find. Given the fact that this game can probably be picked up at most used game stores and that it runs on PS1-PS3 AND considering you can download the game via PSN, I think that nearly all the people who want this game or wanted to play it have done so. I don't see tons of people paying $60 for a remake with better graphics and sound when they can get the proven original for only $10, or in my case, pay nothing as I still have my original PS1 version.

ad buy a consol to play this game, yea ad agree it would print money, but it also would have to meet the high expectations it would bring.

SE have plenty of projects in development as is.
Seeing as a FFVII remake really WOULD be a sure hit, they will always have that ace up their hole if things look bad ;)
They themselves don't seem all to keen on it either :p

I've been thinking the same thing as you for a while. If they had been so intent on not making it, I don't get why they would keep bringing it back up. And considering the success of other remake games, the idea that it wouldn't generate a substantial profit seems a bit silly to me. It just felt like they were trying to call attention to the game without actually announcing that it exists.

Precisely! If they didn't want to remake it, they would have shut up about it and let it die down. If they couldn't remake it, then that would be their story and they'd stick with it. However, they change their stance on it all the time, starting with We Won't, followed by We Might Like To, then We Want to But We Can't and now it's We're Thinking About It...

I'd like to see remakes of the older ones, honestly. The more I see or hear about VII, the less I care about it.

Sorry, won't happen, even though this is one of those times where there is no doubt it would sell millions, the developers are just too short sighted to acknowledge it.

There are other games in the series they should remake first, like VI. But VII is where the big money is so if they were going to go all out for one, it'd be that one. They're obviously teasing though.
