Hmmm I didn't realize Vivi was the main character of FFIX, here I thought that monkey boy Zidane was. How stupid of me.

I prefer IX. I felt that the story moved faster, had genuine warmth and somehow made it's cliche's feel fresh. Plus, watching Odin do some FMV obliterating was just awesome.

The beef I have with "IX" is that its resolution is so piss poor. True FF7 was using new types of block animations and hence why it by today's standards looks worse for wear, but honestly, after the beauty and eye candy of 8, you'd think they could make the resolution better for IX.
I am not asking for anything to be altered, as in I like the bright colors, the whole "crystal comes back" idea, I like the fantasy type hippos, rats, and other species you see in the game (more in the lines of "fantasy" in my mind), but why the hell does it look so damn pixelated?

Your gripe with the graphics is exactly what I was wondering.

The advances between FF7 and FF8 were staggering, really, (cloud's arms)
FF8 had smoother textures, better antialiasing...
FF9 had worse character models, but the environments were simply breathtaking.

That said, I refuse to comment on the thread itself.

Final Fantasy IX is probably my least favorite of the series. The character design was hideous, even if the graphics were technically impressive. In older video games, characters had giant heads because graphical limitations made deformed features necessary to show facial expressions. In a late-era PS1 game, these deformities just looked awkward and ugly. FF IX also turned back the clock on all of the gameplay innovations that were developed in V, VI, VII, and VIII. And aside from Ozma, every single battle in FF IX was laughably easy.

Final Fantasy VII isn't my favorite FF game, but it's worth playing.

10 and 12 stomp them both. Yeah, I went there. Yeah, this'll be flamebait, but I'm dead serious. Of the new generation of FF games, 10 and 12 were both great feats, 7 wasn't bad, just overhyped as the best thing ever. 8 was meh, 9 was mostly meh with a pretty forgettable cast except Vivi.

I'm in the pro-FF XII camp. The only thing I didn't like about it was the story. But the art direction and gameplay were both fantastic.

i liked the magic sysyem more in FF7. you could make any character be whatever you wanted. 9 was more limiting in choices

The story wasn't pure gold, it was there attempt to go back to an FF6 style of no one character being the main character. They didn't fully succeed, as Ashe remained the lynch pin to the whole story, but it was still a decent effort. And when you consider how the FF8 story was batshit insane, 12's isn't bad at all.

I'm going to stay true to the title of the thread, and say the FFVII characters are more powerful, so they'd cream the FFIX characters. I think so, anyway, but I'm not sure.

Rinoa launching her dog at the enemy makes it batshit insane enough, nevermind the story.

I've only played seven and have yet to play nine. I really need to find a copy, but out of all the final fanstasies I have played seven was my favorite. I actually cared about the characters unlike in 10, 4, or 6.

I could never quite figure out what attracted people to FF7...
The story didn't seem so much "Amazing" as it did, "completely absurd."
I mean, he was a supersoldier, except that he wasn't, and the guy with...
A gun for a hand? Oh yeah, and the guy was so angsty that he brooded in a coffin, and the robot cat...
And the ninja...?

Sure, all final fantasies have their plotholes and absurdities, like how the time loop in FF1 was made, or the Time Compression and amnesia from FF8, but I have to suspend my belief to an uncomfortable point in order to accept half the playable characters, let alone the plot.

Really, though, this is a matter of opinion; these games are different in so many ways.

And we all know that the "Waiting in line to get a mining permit" chapter in FFX-2 was the zenith of gaming history.

FF7 was way better than FF9. Sure I don't over praise FF7 as the greatest game of all time and best RPG of all time. But it was a better gaming experience for me, than FF9 was. First of all FF7 had a Science fiction like setting. FF9 was fantasy, which I can live with. But FF9 seemed like it was made by Disney, I mean really. Plus during the last hour of the game, it completely changes on you and decides its going to branch it the science fiction genre. Plus, Kuja, one of the main villains in FF9, was a cross dresser, I know almost everyone looks that in way in Final Fantasy, but the villain shouldn't make me play a guessing game on their sex. In conclusion, FF9 was the worst Final Fantasy game ever, and the creator of the series considers it the best, I guess he's just trying to admit he didn't make a mistake.

FF9>FF7 as Vivi>Cloud however we all know that the greatest Playstation game ever is Harvest Moon: Back to Nature.
Good call!

But yes, FFIX is better than FFVII in my opinion. FFIX was the first Final Fantasy game I played, so I could be a little biased...

Honest to God, why do people love 7 so damn much? I tried, I really did, I played it without cheating, learned all the characters names, even sort of began to understand the story a bit and by the end of the first disc I had absolutely no interest in continuing to play it. It was boring, overstuffed with trivialities and generally no goddamn fun.

9, on the other hand, I loved. I'm not sure why, but I think it has something to do with it being pretty. I actually had like an entire wall of my bedroom wallpapered with the art from that game, from concept right up to FMV screenshots. I'm not usually into games just because they're pretty, but the storyline was kind of obscure, the gameplay with nothing groundbreaking and the map was kind of shit, so I guess it had to be the pretties.

I still play FF7 yes Barret pisses me off everytime they make him talk, but apart from his vernacular (the way it's written) the story is laughable and the characters stereotypical but I would pay full price for it every time.

Durn right Vivi was the main character. He's the one standing on the cobblestone when the rest of thems are all flying by overhead, isn't he?
