Final Fantasy XIII could receive a direct sequel, according to its producer.

Yoshinori Kitase said that he wants players to further understand the game's story outside of titles such as Agito XIII and Versus XIII, according to the Ultimania Omega guide for the game (via Andriasang).

When quizzed whether this would mean the release of XIII-2, Kitase said that he is unsure and that it would depend on fan reaction.

He added: "I'd like to at some point make a story where Lightning ends up happy."

The team who worked on XIII have also begun their next project, which will be available within two years.
There probably going to have to make two sequels. One to explain what the shit happened in the first game and the other to tell this feel good tripe.

Cool, be nice to expand on XIII's world seeing as it felt a little constricted. Cold open it up if they add what the fans feel was missing into the mix.

Considering the mixed reaction to FFXII, I'm not sure if this would be such a good idea. It would probably still sell well simply due to the brand name, but it probably won't due anything to change the viewpoint that Square Enix is killing their own franchise. A veiwpoint that I've only seen increasing over time.

Didn't Square Enix say they didn't know what they wanted to do with the next Final Fantasy game? That seemed to indicate they were going to think outside the box and try some new things. Making a direct sequel kind of seems like the opposite of that.

As for me, I couldn't care less about Final fantasy so I'm not really interested beyond what the reaction from their bloated fanbase will be.

Please...Mr.Kitase...please.

You are...the WORST game-creator Square has ever had. Please...please...go away.

I could forgive X-2.
I could forgive Dirge of Cerberus.
I could forgive XIII (as you said it yourself that apparently no one likes your games after this one tanked)

But please...go away...

A little constricted? That game was so linear, confusing and automatic I was able to complete three other games (Dead Space on PS3, Zelda: Spirit Tracks on the DS and a season of Football Manager on PSP) while also completing FF13.

Never gonna happen.. and in all honestly I doubt the other spin offs of 13 will ever get finished. FF13 did not sell nearly well enough (especially on the 360) and is generally hated by everyone who bought the game and isn't a vapid fanboy. Add that up with how bad FF14 is already doing. Square Enix has crapped on their fans too much in recent years. No one is going to buy a direct sequel to XIII unless they are so blindly devoted they have the Square Enix logo as a tramp-stamp.

Based on the end of the game
it will probably have to be set on Pulse as Cocoon was pretty much destroyed. At least I hope so because the Pulse sections were the best part of the game barring the awesome return to Cocoon cutscene.

What were we missing? Oh yeah fun, a competently told story, enjoyable combat, likable characters, ya know.. all that stuff that constitutes a game and not a shitty movie. But it sure was pretty.

Square can we go back to the days where you put out a game and then moved on? I'm sick of you guys milking everything now.

Groan. As long as it doesn't cut into development time for FFXV, I don't care. I haven't written off XIII yet, but I also haven't been in a hurry to play it. Seriously, no FF game has ever so utterly failed to keep me interested in the first couple hours as this one.
