A Hermit's Cave
I feel as though I should preface this by saying that I have a terribly mundane imagination.

Anyway, as with (hopefully) a lot of fellow Escapists, I enjoy reading/writing. Therefore, I cannot be the only one who (whether effortlessly or forcibly) crowbars my fictional race (or at the very least a character who resembles or bears a great number of similarities to my main character) into virtually every universe that I read/watch.

I did it to Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Saga of the Seven Suns, everything written by Raymond E Feist/Fiona McIntosh/Jennifer Fallon, everything set in the Duchies world by Robin Hobb, X-Men and a shit load else. I do it habitually to certain genres of anime as well (if only to make it seem better than it really is, but never mind.)

So, uh... discussion value... *shrug* I'll settle for how much of a ponce you think I am. That'll work...

I too do a bit of mental fantasy persona insertion, mainly revolving around me being a competant, authoratitive hero type, rather than... me. Sorta like what you do

Nope I do the same thing. There are moments where my character would be truly hilarious for television, one such moment is in Inuyasha, where Inuyasha would shout "Kagome!" and Kagome would shout back "Inuyasha!", well I imagined my character in the sidelines shouting, "KHAAAAAAAAAAN!".

Yep. That and I love fitting one in particular into places he definitely wouldn't belong. His reactions are perfect.

I like to imagine a super powerful demi-god creature just sitting on the sidelines watching the main cast, and the main cast is all like(in whispers) "hey do you see that-", "shhhhh, don't mention it.", "but theres a-", "I said dont mention it, pretend like its not there, it will make things worse..."

and the thing just stands there enjoying the show, sometimes talking with the characters but never appearing in any scenes and having no impact on the story at all, only being there for the sole purpose of lauding its power over all and having the ability to get the protagonists out of any tight spot and not doing a damn thing at all to help.

occasionally playing the part of "The Wizard that Did It". it makes filling up the plotholes and crap much easier.

Haha, I remember watching LOTR:TT for the first time, watching that scene and thinking,
"Damn man, this is just like the first 15 minutes of Saving Private Ryan."

OT: I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but sometimes when playing a game where theres a horde of enemies at some point I might think to myself "Wouldn't it be cool if a gigantic kilometre tall robot death machine monster suddenly showed up and smashed everyone?"

LOL, not as bad, mind, but I just contrived to have an army of Rangers arrive instead of Erkenbrand (and I did that in the movie as well, 'twas interesting).

Very fourth wall breaking, that.

Don't know about you guys, but with the Harry Potter and Battlestar Galactica ones, I could pretty much re-write the entire damned stories and retcon everything with the same result (as in the original). Then I feel kinda smug and sad (for each franchise respectively) for having butchered it so.

I do often imagine myself to be part of the story or the universe, but I don't have any specific characters I put in there, no.

Not the only person, my character usually ends up in everything I play and watch. Becomes a problem after logging off Dragon Age (after playing the Dwarvern version of Anjel) and stick some porn on... /bleacheyes

I thought I was the only one who did that! Yay, it turns out I'm not weird after all! Yeah, I do that myself with a lot of things. I have two fictional characters I use a lot when writing my own original stories and short screenplays, and they're kind of both partially based on aspects of me and the girl of my dreams. As in, aspects of both, each fitted into both characters. I have a habit of inserting them in my mind into some TV shows and films and games when watching/playing/etc. to mix things up a little, usually as side-kick characters of the main characters. Like, when I watch Doctor Who, they're extra companions, or extra party members in JRPGs, and so on...

The bizarre irony is that I only do this when watching something but when writing fanfiction I stick ONLY to the characters from the canon, and I don't even bother with pairings that aren't already canon or implied in the canon. Yeah, I have too much respect for the integrity of my writing to sully it with slash fiction and shipping and OCs... :p

I do a variation of this, I tend to mix fictions. For example, the Tuatha De Danaan and Mithril combat teams (full metal panic) helping to rescue Ziva David (NCIS) when she was being held in the desert.

Or the TCS Midway (wing commander Prophecy) in pretty much every SciFi show in space.

Or major Motoko Kusanagi (GITS) in...pretty much anything...

The only thing that really kills these fantasies for me is when everything turns out ok and valuable lessons are learned that help out in the future, do you think Earth could have beat the Auri if they'd had someone holding their hands for every mission?

Whenever I write, I try to go for a more "realistic" fiction. I've never put any imaginary races or things that are "too" out there into any of my stories.

In that case, I believe you will appreciate this [http://www.collegehumor.com/article/6099253/jk-rowlings-deleted-harry-potter-character]

But yeah, it's practically impossible for me to read/watch/play anything without inserting a superpowered version of me. But when I can do that, I always find them to be overpowered and unbelievable. So I need a character that is powerful and charismatic, yet weak and peripheral. I am never happy! Basically I want to be Artyom from the Metro 2033 book which I am reading. Awesome.

Totally. Mega totally.

Kidding, there's nothing wrong with doing that. Everyone's inserted themselves into stories at one point to save the world/get the girl/muck about. It's good fun! It only crosses the line when you write 400 bloody pages of it without any trace of the english language within 20 miles and post it everywhere on the internet for criticism. But only criticism that says it's the best thing ever, you don't like other criticism. Yes I was forced to read the certain Mary Sue Harry Potter fanfic, just incase you were trying to guess.
