Suzaku Kururugi - I like his naive sense of righteousness, it's something to admire you know? Also Lancelot Albion is fucking awesome.
I had no problem with Suzaku because he worked as an excellent foil to Lelouch, and even though basically every moment I was going, "Suzaku. Stop being dumb. Suzaku. Suzaku. Suzaku. Stop being dumb." it worked because it was in line with his character.

I liked Sasuke right up until he started crying tears of blood. There's only so much emo even I can take. That was about when I stopped following Naruto, actually.

Well Vanille was my favourite character in Final Fantasy XIII, despite most of the plot being her fault...

*Gets behind Industrial Grade Flame Shield*
I did not play the game, but I watched a Let's Play of it, and...I'm hazy on the details, but there was that moment when she basically says to Sazh, "let's run away"...and they do, and leave everybody else behind. I practically did a spit-take, that scene was so brilliant.

That game has tiny points of brilliance, swallowed up by the darkness surrounding them.

Hope, however, is where I draw the line.

Hope from FF13.
Goddammit!

Noel from FF13-2. Actually he is one of my favorite FF chars of all time. If Squall went through what Noel did, he would create an emo singularity that would destroy existence.
And for my entry, I liked Squall. I even liked the infamous "go talk to a wall" scene. However, I feel like Squall was as poorly handled as the rest of FF8's story. He starts as a jerk (<3), and then just sort of...stops. Not only does he not really have a progression, his behavior never has any consequences or, for that matter, any effect on the plot.

Er...there are probably some others, but that'll do, I guess.

Many, many people dislike the post-Knuckles cast of the Sonic series, while I like most of them. A character people just can't stand is Charmy Bee, but I just think he's adorable! I especially liked the Chaotix in the Sonic x anime.

(The japanese version anyway, 4kids ruined their voices and cut/censored half of their scenes.)

Well, I liked Emile and Martha from Tales of Phantasia 2 for the Wii. Yeah, he's a whiney emo at first, but over the course of the game he develops quite a bit. I mean, if you want character development, you can't start off with a badass, right?

I can't really think of anyone... I guess i'm a sheep like that. I do wonder who is gonna say jar jar binks first and then try and defend THAT. I've been seeing some industrial grade flame shields around here but those arn't gonna cut it me thinks...

James Heller the PC of Prototype 2. He killed Alex Mercer the protagonist of the first game, who got a very cultish following, so that caused a lot of people to hate him due to that and because of Alex's personality change.

I liked Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2, I don't care what you say, he was a freakin' stud.

Everyone's all like, "amg Raiden such a baby amg i wanted to be snaek waaahhwaaah." Yeah, shut'cho mouth he was cool.
I liked Raiden. Then I played Metal Gear Rising. Now he's just one notch below Bayonetta. He's da fuckin' bomb.

OT: Squall from FFVIII. Yeah, fuckers, I said it. I don't really understand this contempt for 'whiny' characters. He's canonically 17, for god's sake. Do you expect some cut-out stoic badass in your JRPG mostly involving kids in military academies/orphanages? I like them all. You heard me, Spoony.

I didn't think he was that bad, he was totally fucking badass in MGS4 though.

Most people seem to hate all the Ponds in Doctor Who, but I thought Rory was pretty cool. Amy is only bearable because Karen Gillan is far too attractive for a Scot (and River Song can fuck off), but I actually liked Rory and sympathized with him a lot.

Already listed but Shinji Akari. Infamously wimpy, whiney, and indecisive? Hell yea, but name one 12-13 boy year old who isn't in one way or another?

It makes him somewhat human considering all that EVA could have just had them talk, interact and think like little adults for no reason other than lazy writing. EVA has some problems with it, but Shinji is actually the least notable one (if at all).

Also (this one is going to put me on some fangirl's hitlist lol) Relena Peacecraft from Gundam Wing along with every other female lead in any popular series with a bunch of bishie/handsome male cast. Is Relena annoying as hell in the beginning? Yes. Does her pacifist preaching resemble a drill boring into your skull? Yep.

But it was long established in anime (to this day) that the lead female must call out the name of her hero or love interest (and he her) randomly throughout..so Relena isn't really unique in this regard. GW is written for teenagers/kids anyway so the characters are going to be 1-2 dimensional..but Relena seemed the most fleshed out due to her arch from preppy teenage girl to politician.

I'm gonna put my neck on the block and say Radagast from the Hobbit movie. I thought he was a fun, whimsical character who was a joy to watch. I even loved his bunny sled. Oh, and I'll add Tauriel from the sequel, mainly because she's getting crapped on purely for existing.

While I'm talking Tolkien, I'll add Maeglin from The Silmarillion. He tends to get remembered as "that dick who betrayed Gondolin's location to Morgoth," but everyone seems to forget that he only did so after a few torture sessions.

Also, pretty much every Walking Dead character that the fan base hates, particularly Andrea. The fan base seemed to think that killing a man in his sleep is a good and just act. I can't accept that. Ever.

I love Radagast in the film, I'm a fan of the Tolkien universe as well and he didn't bother me at all.
I don't believe Tolkien wants people to assign 'dick' and 'hero' status to all his characters...just those who are corrupted by darkness and those who are resilient to it and don't give up. Even Sauron is just a glorified control freak who sees his own actions as trying to bring order to chaos.

Tiny Tina.

I can see why others dislike her but I don't mind her. I absolutely loath Handsome "I'm going to do every single thing I can to not utter one swear word" Jack though.
What? He calls you a ***** during his story about the spoon guy, that counts.

I appreciated Jaime from ASIAF before he had his sympathetic parts explained. He was too smug not to.

My wife likes to point out that my favourite characters in TV shows are often the most despicable ones - Denny Crane in Boston Legal, for example, or Brian Kinney on Queer as Folk.

In those particular cases I think I like that they're bastards AND they have redeeming qualities when it really comes down to it, but there's an awful lot of bastardry in them :p

Sauron even had a moment where he was genuinely shocked at the destruction of Numenor. Really, the only completely dickish character is Morgoth.

I like Navi from Ocarina of Time, maybe I'm crazy but if I'm suddenly told I have to have the world, I'll happily take a sidekick who's only purpose is to help me, and give me vital info on a bunch of monsters. I also find her "hey", "listen" and "watch outs" to be kinda cute. >.>

I'll throw in the entire 5th generation of Pokemon, they take a lot of online hate from people, but they've become my favorite generation, and it's sad to see so much people hate them all because one happens to be a garbage bag.

No, I understand him being angry at Danzo (he did order Itachi to do what he did) and Sasuke does kill him, his revenge should have ended there but no, he goes on a rampage against the village that has sheltered him and the friends who adored him for no reason (his vengeance is over with Danzo's death dammit) Hell, Gaara had it WAY worse than Sasuke and he turned into a damn cool dude!
Sasuke is vengeful against the village because it was the strong feelings that Itachi had for the village that made him live the sacrificial life he did - in that sense it was the village who killed his brother. It's like the scenario where (I'm sure some movie or book or something plays out this way but I can't think of one off the type of my head) you have a husband, a wife, and a child. They're in a dangerous scenario where the mother sacrifices herself to save the child. From that point on the husband sees the child as the person who "killed" his wife. Similar feelings are going on there. It's not logical by any means but yeah.
