Nox, my avatar. He gets seduced by the eliacube, goes mad, forgets his family, let's them die, then spends the next 200 years researching and finding everything he can out about wakfu, as well as absorbing as much as he can. All the while he kills whoever he needs to and does horrible things because he thinks that in the end he will be able to go back and it won't matter.

Then, after all that work, all the bad things he has done, all the wakfu gathered, he gets a 20 minute jump in time that achieves shit-all. He has about a minute to begin comprehending what he has done before he is set upon and, broken and weeping, escapes. He is found as a pile of dust near his families gravestone.

Captain America... No, not really... that was just a piss take... it would be more shocking if he lived considering the title!

Lenny... I actually cried when I read this the first time, and subsequently cried when I saw the film the first time... Seriously upsetting stuff!

:p Haha! Bet you all had forgotten that! I once went out with a girl who's mum hadn't ever let her see Bambi because of the mum-death scene! When I made her watch it she cried... Was a bit pathetic to be honest...

Who didn't feel sad when Ellie dies after the montage?

Thought of a couple more:

Great book, bad film. Emma's death. It is so unexpected, and happens so quickly, and it doesn't explicitly say "she died". I had to read the page about three times to grasp it.

Godamn I had another one but now it's slipped my mind...

Firestorms girlfriend in blackest knight.
I don't even remember her name and I've never even read a firestorm comic, but damn, that made me have a kinda "Nooooo!" moment.
Having your heart ripped out then Turned into a pile of salt...Eeee.

Also, Ultimate spiderman's Gwen Stacy death, and also The death of spiderman welled me up a bit.

Grovy.
Seriously though. After all the trouble he went to, finally figuring out his life and being less of a fuck up, self confidence, self respect, even 'gettin' the girl', then... He was just finally starting to get things together man. Now that was sad.
But don't worry Escapists he didn't die, he entered the Legend

Then that massive ***** move when they go back in time just to watch it happen again.

And here was me thinking I'd be the only one mentioning Wakfu

My avatar, Nox, from Wakfu. I could write why but I'm too lazy. If ou've seen it uou know why it's sad.

Say what you will about Gears of War and it's macho-man-let's-kill-everything-in-the-most gory-way-possible-because-this-game-is-for-real-men, shit. I always thought that

Dom's death was pretty sad, especially after a certain part in the 2nd game (when he mercy kills his wife)

Also there's Mass Effect 3, they've all been mentioned already but I'll mention them again.

Mordins death
Legions death
Andersons death

And from the amazing book, Abhorsen, the last book of The Old Kingdom series:
Kibeth's death (The Disreputable Dog). After they trap Orannis in the hemispheres, only one final thing remains to seal him forever. Lirael has to cut them in half to split it, so that Orannis himself is split in two. Although the sword that has to be used could break Orannis, it does so at the cost of the wielders life, Lirael's life. She accepts this, though not without fear, after Orannis is sealed, she delivers the blow to break the hemispheres Orannis is trapped in.

As she feels life draining from her, fear takes over at that moment and she cries out for Kibeth, suddenly she feels a sharp pain, Kibeth bites off her arm at the forearm and takes the blow herself, sacrificing herself to save Lirael. Lirael and Kibeth have been constant companions since the 2nd book, it's such an emotional moment. I have never cried at any sad moments in any films, games or books, but that was certainly the closest I've ever been.

Is it really too hard for people to actually MENTION WHAT THEY'RE SPOILING before they put down the spoiler tag?
to be honest the thread is about the deaths of characters so spoilering seems a little redundant to me.

I can't really think of one, i know i've teared up to one but i can't remember which.

so i'll go with Raziel's imprisonment in Legacy of Kain: Defiance
(skip to 5:20)

when Wash gets stabbed through like a shish-kabab, twas awful

Dollhouse
when Paul Ballard gets shot in the head in the final ep, it came from nowhere. Also the death of Topher, he was awesome

Buffy
end of season 2 when angel gets run through by buffy to close the portal right after he'd gotten his soul back, MOST DEPRESSING EPISODE EVER

Battlestar Galactica
when starbuck died, even though she came back, it was still depressing

Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog
pennys death, poignant and tragic

It may be apparent from the above that I'm a Whedon fan.

For me, probably in Madoka Magica:
Mami's death.

Her death got to me because of how suddenly it happens and how early into the show. The death's that effect me the most are the ones that just happens. No parting words or build-up. While I did sort of expect something bad to happen at the beginning of the fight, I didn't expect her to get her FREAKING HEAD CHOMPED OFF!

It's also the sort of death that happens so fast that it wasn't until the next episode when I realised "Wait... IS SHE REALLY DEAD?!"

Also, in episode 10, the scene after they defeat Sayaka's witch, where Mami goes insane, kills Kyouko, and attempts to kill Homura before getting killed by Madoka, and the fact that all that happened in about 30 seconds.

Other than that I can't think of any others at the moment.

Pey'j, you spend all this time trying to find him and rescue him. You find him trapped in what seems to be suspended animation, only for it to all come crashing down when you release him.

Also, just started a new thread http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.381458-Favorite-last-words-real-or-fictional-beware-potential-spoilers I figured it would be a good tie-in to this one.

Full Metal Alchemist, to echo *everyone else*: Maes Hughes. WHY.

Metal Gear Solid 3: The Boss. They *make you pull the trigger.*

Nier: Everyone. Popola and Devola, Emil, Kaine if you pick that ending, the King of Facade, Fyra, Old Yonah, the Shadowlord...I mean, this game is a nonstop tearjerker once the plot ball gets rolling. I cried for the entire ending sequence. All of it.

Avatar The Last Airbender: Azula, which wasn't a death, but her spiral into insanity and subsequent being put away was really hard to watch.

Death Note: Naomi. I know it wasn't a major death, but the fact that she turns from determination to quiet despaired suicide really got me. I know what that's like, so it was serious trigger material.

I know people have been repeatedly posting Mordin and Legion's death from ME3, but this one hit me the hardest:

He's as much a hero as Shepard is. R.I.P. David Anderson.

Kaidan, especially when playing the other games cos I knew he could've been there too.

Jack was the only one who died for me cos my Paragon and Renegade were too even. I felt pretty pissed off even into ME3.

All the deaths of characters that I'd known for a while and you start to relate with.

This film will become a Bond classic, in part for the last scene. The story is over, they're happy, bad guys are dead, on holiday in Venice. Suddenly, there's an extra scene at the end where all this calm is thrown up into the shit again and Vesper Lynd gets involved in some botched exchange and you watch as she drowns in an elevator. Also hit me hard cos I looooooooove Eva Green.

"Hahahaha it's a comedy. Hahahaha Brad Pitt is such a laugh. Hahahaha he's messing about in someone's house. Hahahahaha the house owner's back, oh no! He has to hide. Hahahaha he hides in the wardrobe, hahaha Clooney's getting close, this is gonna be embarass-WHAT THE FUCK".

Movies:
The death of Ray. Goddamnit, I'm not tearing up over the death of a cartoon firefly...!

Books:
Dumbledore's death. For a while, I disliked Snape for his involvement in said death... boy did I feel like a jerk when I read the last book... Hell, Snape's eath in the last book was bad too..

TV:
Whenever Leomon dies. Seriously, it's reached the point of being a running gag by now... and sometimes it isn't funny...

Webseries:
The Alpha...Church's death. True, we have Epsilon in his place... but the Church we grew to know and love throughout the Blood Gulch Chronicles is... gone...

Books: The Dragonlance saga.

The death of Flint Fireforge via heart attack, and Sturm Brightblade being killed by his ex-lover Kitiara

Game : Persona 3

I finished the game, which was fantastic, only for the main character to 'fall asleep'. Upon starting the new missions with Aegis, you learn that your character died. I thought about that death for a long while, especially considering all of the bonds you formed as you played the game.

Anime: Full Metal Alchemist

Nina Tucker. Her father Shou turned his own daughter and wife into Chimaera, to gain accolades as an alchemist. I found this a depressing episode.

Moving away from SoIaF and into The Dark Tower for a moment, I was strangely touched by
Oy's death. Roland's treatment of him beforehand, Oy's foreknowledge of what is to come, Roland's realization of same - it's just got me. What's more, it got me as I was sat at my desk in a busy office at lunchtime. Not a good look.
Yeah, have to go with this one. I got all weepy reading it...

Mordin's death in Mass Effect 3. I kind of new it was coming but... Yeah I was almost at tears! One of the best characters of the ME series.

"Had to be me someone else may have gotten it wrong!"

Cheers to Dr. Mordin Solus!
