Or they could just spend so much time immersed in their favourite fictional universe that the language rubs off on them and they start doing it frakkin' spontaneously. That's how it works with IRL swearing usually, you pick up words from hearing them in everyday usage. So if you spend a couple of hours a day watching/playing red dwarf/farscape/mass effect or whatever, it's not that surprising that some fictional lingo creeps into your everyday conversation.
