I guess certain charachters are really facinating..like the Joker or Hannibal lecter, and that they don;t play by societys rules

but I don't know, they somtimes make psycho/socio pathy look "cool" and "whacky"
I didn't think that either of those guys looked cool or wacky... they both seemed like messed up -- albeit glorified -- killers to me.
yeah, not them specifically

more like Dexter or Patrick Bateman (well...batemans pretty messed up)

Does sociopathy count? and are we speaking strictly human psychos?

Otherwise, there's Agent Smith from the Matrix...

Also, there are numerous pathological mental states that fall outside of sociopathy and psychopathy that allow inclusion of a whole lot of interesting fictional characters such as what's-her-name from Fatal Attraction.

Sociopathy is just another word for psychopathy, and vice versa, as far as I know. And nope, non-humans are definitely fair game.

Psychopathy is a complete disregard for morality and empathy. Sociopathy is a specifically anti-social personality. There's a lot of overlap, but they are not strictly inter-changeable.

Psychopaths just don't care when they're doing evil, harmful, threatening or otherwise creepy/deviant stuff. Sociopaths get a kick out of it.

Johnny Gat, the greatest psychopath of all gaming history. No regard for the well being of others.

I like John Cleaver quite a bit, as well as Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. Jhonen Vasquez makes psychopaths so entertaining! (And while we're at it, I'll just throw in my ex-girlfriend. Damn she was crazy.)

Well there's Joffrey from Game of Thrones. Probably is my most hated psychopath in any medium ever.

Tom Ripley (though there have been several film adaptations, with The Talented Mr Ripley being probably the best known, I prefer the original novels.) If he qualifies as a psychopath, that is - he comes across as quite rational, even if he does murder people.

John Doe (Seven)

Hannibal Lecter. Preferably as played By Brian Cox in Manhunter. Lecter is described as 'disarming', but Hopkins never came across like that, and the books and films following after Silence got rapidly worse, with the writer apparently forgetting that Lecter was supposed to be the bad guy.
Lector was never the bad guy: he was the WORSE guy.
That's why he wins in the end.

also, I'm seeing a LOT of characters here that aren't psychopathic. Particularly in that many are SOCIOPATHS, which are not the same thing, even though everyone treats them as such

Mom from Futurama.

"When he has born I flipped a coin to keep him or the afterbirth."
"Yes, Mom you told that at his graduation." (paraphrasing but you get the idea)

That about sums it up.

Not necessarily my favorites, but you could probably use a lot of the villains from the Final Fantasy games. Sephiroth, Kefka, Seymour, and a few others whose names I can't recall; they're all crazy.

Mr. Teatime from The Hogfather. Him being a bit...odd is a little of an understatement. He is, well, efficient. He even followed the assassin guild protocols and used a mirror under his victim's nose to make sure they were truly dead. Only the head wasn't really near the body at that point.
Him and Carcer from Night Watch...
