Can you give me an example of a movie that was actually better than the book/comic/game it was based on? Of course, you need to know both sources before giving an example.

Well, it depends what you mean by better.

I watched The Eagle the other day. The film was more entertaining than the book, but the book was more historically accurate. I enjoyed both of them, although I enjoyed the film more.

I did much prefer the film version of Howl's Moving Castle to the books though - I found the book a little dry.

Yeah, going back a bit now...

For 1952, its production values were really good, with pretty damned awesome set-pieces (the jousting tournie, the siege of Front de Boeuf's keep etc.). The book was long, turgid and the end-fight was tremendously underwhelming. Bois Guilbert's whacked with an axe... end of. *sigh* I just have a tiny bit of trouble getting over Robert Taylor's accent.

i think its funny average novels make great films, like Jaws.

but as for really good novels, they don't often make good films even with a geat cast and excellent direction.

the film adaptation of Let the right one in(the swedish one) is fantastic though and far exceeds the novel on every front thanks to a stellar cast and location.

The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.
I read the book in fifth grade after having seen the then recent film, and I found the book really boring.
There wasn't as much ass-kicking in the book, I thought.

Edit: I haven't seen it yet, but the adaptation of Night Watch to film looks pretty awesome, and the trailer is full of WTFery.
I hope it's as good as the book.

Jurassic Park.

The first one at least.

I like reading Crichton's novels but Spielberg bringing the novel to life definitely had a "WOW" factor to it, unmatched by other films of its time.

2010 True Grit.

The Harry Potter series books and movies are pretty epic. I give the edge to the movies though.

Have to disagree with you there, yes, the film is excellent, but i read the novel a couple of years after the film came out, and i was blown away with it.

Probably Lord of the Ring. The books have way too much text, while the films have all the story and action without Tolkien's flair for over-dramatizing every single piece of food.

Well then maybe it's my childhood bias speaking in favour of the movie. Plus, the theme for Jurassic park is timeless. One of my favourite movie themes to date.

I thought the novel was excellent when I finally read it but if given a choice, I would watch the movie once more.

The Man in the Iron Mask.

Though that has less to do with the movie being that good, and more the book being that bad.

American Psycho

The book is okay, but lacks the style, panache and the same dark humour of the film. It's too black, too black for me anyway, and incredibly unpleasant. Also, everything is about suits or ties or... whatever, it lays how vacuous he is on too thick. The film does a good job of reigning in the book's excesses.

Also Christian bale deserved an oscar nom for his performance in the film, this is the film that made me rate him as an actor.

I'm going to have to second the Lord of the Rings. I've read all three of the books and the Hobbit and have seen all the movies. While the books are far more in depth they sort of drag on for too long - I believe I had to skip the entire Rivendell bit in the Fellowship out of sheer boredom. Looking back I might have been too young to appreciate the books but I think most people will get just as much out of the movies as the books without having to spend the large amount of time it would take to read it.

I'm surprised childhood bias doesn't apply to me to be honest, i was only 10 or 11 when i saw JP (new at the Cinema), plus it was the first film i ever saw on the big screen. But there's just something about the book that puts far above it, even considering all that.
