Going by this logic, wouldn't every Final Fantasy game after the first one be a "shameless grave robber"?

I like FF13. It's fairly close to traditional Final Fantasy games, just with everything condensed and with more emphasis placed on combo building. In other words, it's Final Fantasy Lite, and that suits me just fine.

So it seems to me that as a game it's great, but as a sequel it sucks? I mean the only people who complain about FF13 are final fantasy fans; and the new players seem to love it.
Yeah, there's some truth to that, and personally I'm still baffled as to why a lot of people who liked Final Fantasy in the past really hate XIII. I understand people who don't like Final Fantasy (eg, ooh, let's say, Yahtzee) hating XIII, but I really didn't see what XIII did that was so offensive to fans of the series. I'm a huge fan of the series (I think 50% of my posts here have been about it in one form or another) and I loved everything about XIII. Yes, I wish it had more stuff to do outside of the main narrative, but frankly if I really want more stuff to do I will go and play another game. Hell, I can pause XIII, switch on my newly acquired PSP (loving it, btw), play PixelJunk Monsters for a little while and pretend it's a minigame! Well, not really, but you take my point.

And I don't get why people (again, I mean people who like FF generally) dislike Vanille and Hope. These are kind of archetype characters for any Japanese RPG or anime type thing, except I think they're actually done with more depth than normal (this is relative; I know there is not much depth per se in many JRPGs, which is fine by me, not everything has to be deep. Frankly I appreciate the simple, almost operatic nature of JRPG characters). There is some genuine darkness to both Hope and Vanille. Hope is dead-set on murder, Vanille's cheerfulness is a façade covering incredible, crippling guilt.

Why do people have issues with character names in this game, if you played the game for longer than an hour you'd know Lightning wasn't her real name, Snow says as much when they all introduce themselves.

Snow, Hope, Sazh, Vanille and Fang aren't even bad real life names when we have 'celebrities' calling their children Apple or infact here http://stupidcelebrities.net/2007/12/20/bizarre-celebrity-kids-names/ take a look at that!

My personal favourite genuine real name of all time is Princess Tiaamii Crystal Esther Andre.....I mean wtf were they thinking, any FF character name is 1000% better

Lets have a look...

Final Fantasy I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII,VIII,IX,X,X-2,XII,XIII...

Guess what, all the monsters have similar names and looks. AND THE MOOGLES (Kupo) ARE ALL IN THEM! I dont know why you didn't think they'd do this to begin with, heck Shiva, Bahumat, Ifrit etc were all used in previous FF games too.

I'll admit though, Vanille is a bit..creepy.

Vanille was an annoying character at first, but after you get to know her backstory you realize she's just covering something up. I never found any of the characters annoying except for when they break out the "we have to work together" or "I'M A HERO" lines. Besides that I thought the story was well put together. Also... why are people complaining about not having enough open-world? I just got to the open-world part and I'm only 17 hours into the 50-60 hour long game. That's 33 hours of open-world MINIMUM (unless of course the game isn't 50 hours long and I was lied to).
