I have enjoyed the FF series since the first one (God, I'm old...). However, I haven't played any since IX because they don't look any good. I could be wrong. FF13 doesn't look like it's an exception, but if it comes out for the 360, I'll probably get it eventually.

Also, someone said this already but I will second it, if you have only played from FF7 on, definitely go back and play some earlier ones, ESPECIALLY FF3(6 in Jap.)

Taken from the Wikipedia page (so pinch of salt as always!):

"The concept for Final Fantasy XIII's battle system is to maintain the strategic nature of command-based battles. The system stemmed from a desire to create battles similar to those found in Final Fantasy VII Advent Children.[3] Like those in Final Fantasy XII, battle sequences are integrated into the world environment.[4] The Active Time Battle (ATB) system will return, but is expected to work differently from its predecessors.

The battle system that was shown during the E3 2006 trailer was only a prototype. Recently, Square Enix showed battle footage in various Japanese magazines and trailers which introduced a new interface. You can only control one character at a time in battle, although battle parties of up to three characters have been shown. You can stack up to three commands per turn and release them all at the same time to form a combo. These commands include series staples such as Attack, Fire, Blizzard and Cure, as well as new ones such as Launch, which sends the enemy up in the air. The game does not make use of MP but introduces "cost points" for each command. Cost points determine how many times the commands can be used per turn. The overclock gauge from the prototype battle system is replaced with a break bar. The minimap shown earlier has also disappeared from the battle interface. The player is able to view the HP and name of the enemy before engaging it in battle. When the player engages an enemy, the camera moves to another position and the battle menu appears, making the battle transitions nearly seamless."

Perhaps not random encounters then?

Gah i couldnt live with 360 without ps3 it seems to hve the best rpgs and the good 360 games get remade for ps3 (eternal sonata) but i dont like the whole lightning = femle cloud thing hes an ass.
I don't think Lightning will really be that similar to Cloud, people just made the assumption since they're both blonde and are both soldiers, and I agree, Cloud's a mopey little twit.
It's Dia Walruva. And have you noticed that Dia is really a post-op Cloud?

Kidding aside, combat looked good from the trailer. I wonder how it actually flows in-game.

As long as there is no really dumb weapon (Gunblade comes to mind very quickly) or some stupid fighting system, I'll definetely look into this game.
...Which means that this one isn't for you, seeing as the gunblade is already confirmed from various pictures. ^^°

At least in this one it's not a "Gun Sword" with some sort of timing mechanism, the blade actually folds back and out of the way to transform into a gun a vice versa. Still silly, but it could be worse.

Yeah, the more I look at the creators' past projects, the less interested I become with this. X pretty much killed FF for me; this is just another nail in the coffin.

Yes FF8 was brilliant, I really enjoyed that one. The gunblades were great fun, and the whole concept of it I thought was cool aswell. Although one thing that I didn't really like on FF8, was that you had to steal your magic in order to have it. Couldn't just level up to it.

FF13 is going to be lame because of the director who is the director of FFX-2.
That's kinda unfair. toriyama or however u say his name has been involved in almost all FF games since 7 one way or another. HOWEVER if he diesn't realize after all the hype and feedback over the years of what tru FF fans are lookign for then i have nothing to say abotu this game. Better not blow this one. It's too important. The First FF game on a next gen consoles is usually a classic.. time will tell

No clue, try amazon, craigslist, or ebay. I know a lot of them are available for the PSP, GBA, and DS though

okay i read the wikipedia page and i know about its "seamless system, but i have played since ff1 and loved it they have gotten only downhill since 8 and im not having high hopes anymore just hopes of a decent game ff13 presents so well but im hoping its not another bark no bite thing,

and viper i loved the steal magic cuz the magic had a count not mp and that was close to ff1 and it was awesome 9 was a major let down in my opinion... (i gave up on grammar and spelling corrections in this post)
