Actually, check out Final Fantasy XIII if you can find it for a discount. It's actually one of the better Final Fantasy games to start with since most of the haters are Final Fantasy purists. If you play Call of Duty or other linear FPSes, then you'll definitely like Final Fantasy XIII. It keeps you on track and has really good gameplay(you don't even need to use auto-battle) in my opinion. The art style is great, the story is fairly good once you understand what's happening, and the characters constantly develop and grow together. However, it takes a while for the world to open and the battles take a bit of strategy, which doesn't help with the horrible battle curve after Chapter 10. And please don't call XIII an RPG, J or otherwise. So many little RPG elements made it to the game that it's about as much an RPG as Call of Duty. It's more of an Action RPG on rails than anything.

However, if you want more of a full RPG with "turn-based combat"(used loosely because ATB still exists), go for Final Fantasy IV, VI, VII, X, or even Tactics. The other Final Fantasy games aren't bad bar II, but the stories and characters aren't really that great.

Nice. *smiles* And agreed, though to be honest I've not given a nit or any of them past 6. Seems Yahtzee and I have an agreement on this aspect of RPGs, that they've become far more about the spectacle than any kind of interesting story or character, kind of like people that defend the new Transformers movies by saying the visuals are great... *rubs her temples* For me, each one I've seen has been more awful than the last, all style and no substance, culminating in the disaster that is XIII.
I fail to see how Final Fantasy VI has a great plot. It had great characters, sure, but the plot was "Destroy the Empire with your rebel team". Don't tell me that plot was never unused.

Pray tell, how did Final Fantasy become about spectacle after VI?

The greater the number at the end of "Final Fantasy" the worse it gets.

Final Fantasy 6 is the last well made FF game.

7 started the shit train by being way too angsty.

Just to add as someone who has played up to where the game becomes "open"
After you defeat the final boss, the game ends on a pretty logical closure point but you have the ability to revert back to the time right before you fight the boss and go back to do the "side quests"
Now the "side quests" are just hunt missions. You activate these stone things and it has you go kill a monster. THATS ALL. There is no other form of side quests in the game other than hunt missions where all you do is kill monsters.
The area where these hunt missions take place is very large and you unlock more areas of it as you do hunt missions but there are still no villages, people, or dungeons to discover which are usually not only parts of a Final Fantasy game, but also JRPGs / WRPGs in general.

Anyway, My favorite FF games are all older gen. In this order of favorites out of ones I've played: FF3 (or 6, whatever you go by its the one with freaking Kefka), FF7, FF9, FF10, FF8, FF12, FF13

But 2 was horrible, and that's a really low number. How do you explain that?
And 9 was amazing, my personal favourite.

the series gets stupidly ridiculously stupid after the 7th.

ergo: the seventh is the last great Final Fantasy game.

the thread title "Final Fantasy Curiosity" really sounds like you're looking into a rather fatal sexual fantasy...

... but that's just me.

FinalFinalFinalFinalFinalFinalFinalFinalFinalFinalFinalFinalFinal Fantasy is a franchise so large and complex that it would take three months without human interaction to get into it.

which is why i have sex and not play FFThirty eight or sommin'...

Get an NES, SNES, and PSX Emulator and play FF1, FF2(4j), FF5, FF6(3j), and FF9. It is best to ignore all other games in the series as between 6 and 9, High Fantasy was ignored for a sort of steam/cyberpunk setting, and FF2j and FF3j are both terrible games.

FF10+ all started a trend of linear hallway + automatic combat that pretty much removed gameplay. Although FF10-2 is worth playing, as it isn't nearly as linear and has a fun 'job' gameplay mechanic that is reminiscent of the older FF games. But FF10 is bad, so just coles notes the story or something if you're going to play FF10-2. Don't bother playing through it.

I've been thinking about getting FF13 for a while now, but I'm still uncertain. I've can probably get that and/or Mass Effect 2. I remember Final Fantasy 7 being the first Final Fantasy I played and what a life changer it was for me
Rent FF13
See how horrible it is
Return it
PROFIT!

So I've never played a final fantasy before. Dunno why but I have never been motivated to buy one, probably because none of my friends have either and there doesn't seem to be much coverage of them in Australia. I did play Kingdom Hearts on the PS2 and loved it, as well as pokemon on my old gameboy colour. Today I was looking through the PSN store and came across the original PS1 final fantasy seven and thought "what the hell?". I picked it up and I am enjoying it immensely so far. So my question is; are all of these games this enjoyable, and if so would 13 be worth aquiring? I don't have much money at the moment and I don't want to waste it on a game that will only last me a few days.
13 Seems very long for what little you do, extremely linear and fighting gets super boring. The story has so much potential but to me it just seems so disneyized that all seriousness gets flushed away by cliches and boring battles.
I'd recommend going from 4-10. That's where the writing/fun seemed to excel. FF1 has no story and can get boring but it's still a classic, I've yet to beat FF2 and all I've heard is FF3 is a ***** and can get frustrating so play at your will. A good series of ups and downs, you've started at a good one.

The reason FF3(6j)'s plot is well known is because of a few things that it does very well, which other video game stories hadn't at the time.

A) The villain gets what he wants. This is HUGE. The world is DESTROYED under his power.

B) There is no clear main character. Everyone in your group has varying degrees of significance throughout the plot. Where Terra and Locke are considerably the "Main" characters, by a third of the game through, Terra is rarely in your party; and another third of the way through, Celes is the main focus character.

C) Gameplay and story telling through multiple perspectives over the same period of time. This game time travels, a lot. You often replay the same period of time, using different characters in completely different situations. This not only enhances the story, and helps define the characters, but also improves gameplay considerably.

D) Characters die, in a meaningful way. This was done in Final Fantasy 2(4j) as well, however some characters died in meaningless ways. Specifically Porom and Palom. While it did have a big impact and is a memorable scene, it was silly and unnecessary.

In FF3(6j) Shadow dies because you don't wait for him, which is sadistic and awesome at the same time. And his death has lasting effects on the game as when you rest in certain inns, you unlock additional parts of his storyline, but only if you let him die. As well as many of the Espers whom give their lives voluntarily to help you thwart Kefka.

Cid. Cid's death was one of the most memorable scenes in an jRPG period. You spend days trying to keep him alive, and healthy. Alone, on an island, with only your surrogate father figure. He is dying, after restoring you from a sort of comatose state. Using his last breaths to leave you a note about a raft he has built so you could escape. Which you don't even notice right away because you are too busy trying to commit SUICIDE because of how huge an impact his death had on you. Seriously, the game could have ended right there for Celes, because of how important Cid's death was.

As well as General Leo's death, pretty much punctuating Kefka's dominance over the world, and Celes' position as the grand opposition to it.

In addition to the fact that the gameplay in FF3(6j) was just superb. The complexity of the Esper leveling system, the sheer amount of hidden gems and secrets. Three secret characters who require very specific acts to acquire (GoGo, Mog, and Umaro.) The fact that any treasure chest you can access in the World of Ruin that wasn't opened in the World of Balance having different loot after the fact. The liars in Zozo, the Coliseum. The VELDT. There is nothing in this game that wasn't perfectly executed, short of the how the sound was ported into the GBA Remake.

It's close to the perfect game, as long as jRPGs are something you enjoy.

Ok for me Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9 and 10 are 4 of the best games ever. Gameplay is ok but ff is all about the story and I love the storys of these final fantasy games. FF 10-2 was crap but the bonus ending is the ending you want at the end of 10 so I played it. FF 12 was Return of the jedi. It had a death star (really it had a big gun that kills evrything it is pointed at, an evil empire that was called "The Empire", a darth vader moment between two guys except it was "I am your brother" instead of farther and it had a rebal allience that killed the death star thing by blowing up the big gun. FF 13, I hated all of it. There were no side quests, it was just walk down this hallway to get a cut scean, bossbattle or both, all the characters were douche bags and the story was crap. I did not finish it. and the battles sucked. and the weapon system sucked. Your mind cannot understand how much I hate that game. Final Fantasy Verses 13 is square enix last chance to redeam the series. But get 8 and 9 on the psN they rule over most games.

Also is it just me or is it there has not been a good FF since squaresoft joined with enix to make square enix? Think about it the last good one was 10 and that was made by squaresoft.

I suggest playing Final Fantasy 5 and 6, both are very good. FF5 has the classic 4 Crystals story, but is done very well. FF6.. well. Look at my post above if you want a few of the awesome bits of why FF6 is great.

I appreciate that you like FF8 and 9, though. While I think FF7 and 10 are not very good, 8 and 9 are especially good. Although the Draw system in FF8 had a glaring game design flaw that I am surprised was never caught (it encourages you not to cast magic, because the less of a spell you have saved up, the less powerful it is equipped to your stats)

Far be it from me to be an authority on FF, since I've never played 3, 5, 8, 9, 10-2, 11, 12, or 13 - and even 2, 4 and 10 only got the most fleeting of playthroughs - I do think that one person on this list had the perfect formula to experience the best of what FF has to offer.

Luckily for you, most of the older FF games have been reissued for PS1 and are available in good collections :)

Final Fantasy Anthology = FF5 & FF6
I'm a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of the story of FF6, just play it and you'll see its much better than FF7 :)

Final Fantasy Chronicles = FF4 & Chrono Trigger
Though slightly misnamed and its a bit odd they didn't have different ordering, but meh. Chrono Trigger alone is SO worth it, and it'll make you wonder why the hell you EVER put up with random battles in other games. Imagine a world map where you can actually explore a bit and you are not going to run into random battles every 5 seconds.

Final Fantasy Origins = FF1 & FF2
You can't call it Final Fantasy without the first two games. Oddly enough FF3 still hasn't been re-released (to my knowledge) so its only available via a japanese rom and translation patch, via emulation.
Anthology has 6, the best 2D FF released, Chronicles has the mighty Chrono Trigger, which I'm currently playing as of this minute, and Origins has the very awesome 1, although I played my playthrough on the GBA version on Dawn of Souls. Still, the compilations are your best choice for experiencing the best that SquareEnix has to offer.

Also, don't forget about another of their shining gems: FF Tactics. Also on the PS1, it's a different formula than any of the other games in the franchise, but it's done so well - story, graphics, gameplay, sidequests - that it simply can't be overlooked.

I'd say:

FF6
FF4
FFT
FF8
FF10-2 (For the battle system - ignore the story)

The best mindset when talking about Final Fantasy games is to take everyone's opinions about them with a grain of salt. I've heard people say that VIII was the awful, I've heard people say that it's the best one since the 2D era. I know people who love X and XII, and a lot of people think they're terrible. And hey, for all of the XIII that happens, I like the game.

Personally, I say that XIII is worth the buy, but it's a "your mileage may vary" game. If you have a PS3, then you can get VII (and I think VIII and IX as well) off of the PSN. I think VII and IX are fun, but I can't speak for VIII (I just got it recently and haven't played it).
