As a person who really doesnt like Final Fantasy, I did enjoy FFX enough to play a good chunk (probably less than 10% actually, but it felt like alot)
I hated FFI, which I played the Gameboy remake (that was paired with 2) because I got stuck in a point I could not get past ever.
The others Ive played are X-2 (sucks), XI (waste of money), and XIII (only got through first part)

XIII was good, so was X. IX was also very fun. As for the ever-famous Final Fantasy VII, it really hasn't aged well. Sure, it was good for the time, but, looking back, it's not that great. VIII is easily broken gameplay-wise, with many things that you can exploit; the junction system, if used right, can send your stats sky high. III is really difficult and requires a lot of level grinding.

Honestly, just go with something that looks good to you. Now, if you were looking for other JRPGs, I could REALLY help you.

FFVI is the most over-rated in the series by a million miles. FFVII is actually the best in the series and objectively has the most varied content. The 3 ps1 releases are easily the pinnacle of the series. Pre-rendered backgrounds allowed them to more cheaply create for more immersive worlds. X-XIII have all been illogical linear paths since then, and they annoyingly got rid of the world map and vehicles which was a significant layer of gameplay. The Ps1 games also have the most minigames. Gold saucer is my favourite location in the entire series, triple triad is wonderful and FFIX is a great if slightly more immature adventure. They're also by far the most imaginative. Starting with X they've run out of ideas. VII is the most unique setting, a modern cyberpunk world, VIII is futuristic and interesting school themes, IX is the most imaginative medieval entry in the series with some great towns and characters. X-XIII are all generic futuristic fantasy mish mashes with no cohesive themes except cliche religious nonsense villains.

Absolutely stay away from XIII, worst in the series and completely undeserving of the final fantasy name. XII and X are great games and the most recommendable if the ps1 era graphics are too off putting for you. I'd recommend XII as it has a more mature story and the best battle system in the series by far.

VI and VII are legitimately the best. I'm really surprised at how well VII holds up when played on PSP, actually; it's one of the few nostalgic games I've played that actually feels like it was better than I remembered it. Meanwhile IX is a good runner up, and X is kind of a mixed bag but still tolerable for the fact that it's got a really solid battle system. To summarize each...

VI has a steampunk setting where magic is dying and you play Terra, one of the last humans alive that can use magic naturally, as you fight with a group of rebels against an evil Empire that's hoarding the mystical power of Magicite and the spirits known as the Espers. The entire magic system is built around Espers, which you can call as summoned monsters. When you equip one, it brings several magic spells along with it that you learn as you level up.

VII is difficult to describe in terms of its setting's timeframe. On one hand technology in this world is somewhere around early 1900's levels. On the other, the discovery of Mako energy, siphoned from deep within the planet, gives the Shinra electric power company a HUGE boost and has allowed them to master much more advanced concepts like computers and helicopters. However, the only thing more powerful than Shinra's Mako technology, it seems, is Shinra's greed. Mako is the planet's life energy, and the more they siphon, the more they kill it off, and it's up to Cloud Strife and the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE to make them see the truth... with explosives! The magic system of this game is based on Materia, IE special marbles you stick inside your weapons and armor. It's like the Esper system in a way, but much more flexible and compartmentalized.

IX follows Zidane Tribal and Tantalus, a band of thieves... ... well, actually they're performers... who have an important mission: kidnap Princess Garnet of Alexandria and bring her back to the kingdom of Lindblum in one piece. Things get more complicated, however, as they discover that Garnet's mother, Queen Brahne of Alexandria, is preparing to mobilize an army of dolls fashioned into the form of Black Mages. Where do these monstrous weapons of war come from? And how will this all end? You'll just have to play it to find out. This game's magic system is a bit less interesting than the previous two, but it works; you just get spells and abilities from pieces of equipment.

X is the story of Tidus, a Blitzball player from the futuristic city of Zanarkand, who finds himself transported 1000 years into the future. The city and life he knew is gone, and the world is terrorized by a colossal monster called "Sin," a being who supposedly exists to punish mankind for having the hubris to build machines; thus, Spira is regressed from the futuristic state Tidus knew and now comprised of a variety of islanders and tribes founded on the mysticism and dogma of the Yevon faith. Tidus travels with a summoner named Yuna on a pilgramage back to Zanarkand, hoping to find answers about what happened while Yuna seeks the power of the Final Aeon to defeat Sin. I make this sound cool, but the story's actually pretty weak, rather predictable, and full of odd holes. It does have one of the best turn-based battle systems ever devised, however, and has the distinction of Aeons, the game's summons, actually being full-blown characters that can take your place in a fight as opposed to just really big, flashy spells that cost too much.

Play through Final Fantasy IV, VI, or Tactics if you like Fire Emblem. I know not everyone loves them, but they get the most love and least hate, so it's better if you start off with a loved game first so your view of the series isn't tainted by one entry.

I know plenty of people loved X, but I definitely suggest avoiding it. X popularized the Cinematic RPG, which I honestly believe should be obliterated from the face of the Earth now. The battle system is really solid though, it's definitely the best turn-based combat system in the series.

The first through third installments, as others have no doubt mentioned, are extremely dated. What's your graphical expectation? Were you around in the SNES/Genesis days so that you can enjoy sprites and gaming prior to the PS1 era (some might, I don't know personally). The PS1 might be the best place to start. It's a pity that the majority of modern titles can't hold a candle to the old ones, otherwise I'd recommend something more modern.

Here's my personal opinion: FF7, FFT (first one for PS1), and FF6. All those have excellent stories, brilliant characters, and have great gameplay.

Pretty simple really. Look into all of them and see which one's sound the most interesting to you.

From a gameplay perspective, 4-9 are similar at their core, 1-3 are super old school, X, XII and XIII are all quite different from each other and the previous ones.

From a story perspective, see that first thing I said.

Personally, I would say 1-9 are all great choices to choose from.

I wouldn't start at I- not only is it in no way indicative of the series' tone, it doesn't really hold up by contemporary standards.

No, I'd suggest, for your first, one of the later ones. VII (PSX) is, in my opinion, great, but the best for a newcomer to FF? Probably not. X (PS2) is both friendly and challenging enough for a great ride. X-2(PS2) is also exceedingly fun, if you can forgive its story and character flaws. (And FANSERVICE! All over the place.)

My first was XII, and it remains my favorite- even though I haven't technically, you know, finished it yet... But that wasn't my fault! My copy broke.
With no defined "classes", you are free to develop characters in which ever way you want- Warrior/blk mage and Gunner/wht mage are my favorites. Sure, for optimum stats you *should* keep the classes simple, but a few points here or there really don't make the game a lot harder.

depends on what your looking for. Do you want story gameplay style or what? What kind of RPGs have you played before?
I've only played Pokemon on handhelds, and Epic Battle Fantasy on the net. The later being the reason i want to try out FF. i'm sorta leaning towards X right now because of it's simplicity, but i'm also interested in 3 for it's class system.

The one that got me hooked was X.

Also, I enjoyed X-2, so that's just a matter of opinion.

XIII sucks.

But yeah, whichever you start with, start with a PS2 one. Do NOT start with the 64 bit ones. I like them, but they're very long and tedious and should only be played by true fans.

I loved VIII and VII. Those were the first two I ever played, and they remain my favorites. IX was enjoyable, and so was X and--I'm going to say it--X-2. XII was a low point in the series for me, though others praise it greatly. Just like others hate XIII, though I found it better than XII.

Basically, what you're going to get from this forum question is "Play VI/VII/X" the most, with the others being thrown in here and there. Take your pick really. They're all fun, though some more than others.

Final fantasy tactics still is one of my favorite games, if you have a playstation get that. If you have a psp get the remake for that instead.

Also loved final fantasy XII. But most people didn't for some odd reason.

So long as your first love isn't graphics, you can't go wrong with Final Fantasies IV - VI. The ones before those are pretty good too, same for VII, IX, and X, but I've had the most fun with IV - VI. Final Fantasy XII isn't the worst place to go to either but not everyone has liked the Ivalice games so take your pick.

IV is the quintessential final fantasy. VI and VII are fan favorites (personally prefer VI for the characters). IX is my favorite from the PS1 era. Overall, IV is my personal recommendation though.

FF4 DS (or PSP)

FF6 (GBA)

FF8

FFT (PSP) (great story and game play and amazingly fun)

FF10-2 (for the game play, not the story or Charlie's Angels crap)

FF12 (for the decent game play and star wars rip-off story)

IDK, my BFF jill?
